Are you a person who has many things to accomplish? Are your commitments and responsibilities often interrupted by your daydreams and your slacker? This guide can help you.
Steps
Step 1. Believe that what you need to do is important, and that it makes a positive difference
You have to want it. If you don't want to do what is yours, you will be more inclined to slack off and find a way out that allows you to dodge it.
Step 2. Take the first step
If you need to clean your room but don't know where to start, start with the thing that seems to make the biggest difference in improving the look of the room, like making the bed. If you're organizing documents, start with the ones at the top of the stack and work your way down gradually. If you are counting money, start by creating stacks of bills or similar coins.
Step 3. As you go, remain adamant
If you come across something interesting that might distract you, put it aside and deal with it later. (Of course there are some things like family that take precedence over work, but don't use them as a possible excuse.) Don't interrupt until you've reached a set milestone, finished a whole portion, or completed a step.
Step 4. Take a break (when needed)
Don't stop after only five minutes, unless what you are doing is extremely strenuous. Often the pauses themselves are distractions, so be careful. In any case, the breaks are good times to drink some water, a coffee, take an energy tablet or do some stretching exercises. Limit yourself to short breaks.
Step 5. If you start daydreaming, react immediately
Stop dwelling on the thoughts that cause daydreaming, and get back to work right away. Be careful not to rush though, otherwise you could still risk losing your train of thought.
Step 6. Motivate yourself in case your intentions appear weakened
No matter how huge your task is, you can do it.
Step 7. Make a commitment to finish what you are doing early
Don't procrastinate or fantasize, because a daydream that distracts you from working is not a good way to be in the clouds.
Step 8. Congratulate yourself after completing your commitments
Praise yourself for resisting the temptations of capricious thoughts. Positive reinforcement is an additional foundation that helps you not to get in the way of daydreams.
Advice
- Inspire yourself to work hard when needed, and rest when needed. There is a time for work and a time for pleasure.
- Remember that the focus of all distractions is your mind. It is your mind that responds to what is happening around you. Use it wisely.
- If you can't motivate yourself, use a motivational DVD or something similar. Keep in mind though, that it too can risk distracting you, so if so, turn it off. Listening to music or having the television on can also be a distraction.
