You'll recognize your rapping name right away when you hear it. In the meantime, try to draw inspiration from the past and the present. Consider the names of other rappers and decide whether to choose yours based on that of another artist you admire. There is no right and wrong way to choose a name! Get creative and come up with a name that identifies you. Remember that you can always change it.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Find Ideas
Step 1. Choose a name that fits your style
The rapper names are very different, according to the origin and the songs proposed by the artists. Yours should make the audience understand what your personality is: dangerous, funny, thoughtful or cunning. Think about your identity.
Consider the names used by other rappers in your area. You don't have to copy another person, but it can be wise to familiarize yourself with the music scene you want to introduce yourself to
Step 2. Use your real name as a guide
Include your initials, or turn your name into something completely different. Try a stage name that is similar to yours, but that is unique enough to stand out from the rest. There is no right and wrong way to do it. Leave room for creativity!
- Take, for example, Eminem, born Marshall Mathers. His stage name is inspired by his initials: "M and M."
- Lil Wayne's real name is Dwayne Michael Carter. He just took the "D" off Dwayne to turn him into Wayne!
Step 3. Reuse a nickname you had as a child
It was Snoop Dogg's mother who gave him his stage name: Snoopy (of the Peanuts) was the artist's favorite cartoon when he was little and his mother started calling him using the character's name. When Snoop entered the rap scene, he decided to adopt his childhood nickname to have a unique stage presence.
Method 2 of 3: Find Inspiration
Step 1. Try a rapper name generator
The web is full of free word generators and some of them are specifically designed to come up with rapper name. Even if you don't exactly choose the name generated by the algorithm, you might get the right inspiration.
You may even find "quizzes" on the internet that tell you which stage names you should use
Step 2. Take a cue from your life to choose a stage name
Try using a name, word, or place that was important to you in childhood. Choose something that is always present in your life. You have the ability to identify your name, but you should also choose one that identifies you; so find something that reflects your lifestyle.
Step 3. Ask around
Talk to friends, family, other rappers and ask for their ideas. The people you see every day are the ones who know you best; for this reason it is very likely that they can show you the right way to find a suitable stage name for you.
- Just ask, "I'm trying to find a good rapper name. Do you have any ideas?"
- Ask for opinions on your style. Ask: "What emotions do I convey when I rap?".
Step 4. Choose a name following the model of that of your favorite rapper
This doesn't mean you should call yourself "C-Diddy" if you love P-Diddy. Study the stage names of the artists you admire and think about why their choices are spot on. Use a similar structure or the same figure of speech. Read the stories that tell how famous rappers chose their names.
Method 3 of 3: Try the Name
Step 1. Enter the name in the lyrics of a song
You don't have to use a name just because you said it out loud, especially if you're new to it. Say the name at the beginning of a rap and evaluate the audience's reaction. If you're referring to yourself, be sure to use your new stage name. It should be catchy and easy to remember.
Register and listen to your song. If you like what your name sounds like, keep using it. Instead, if you don't like it, try finding another one
Step 2. Don't be afraid to use multiple names
Maybe you express more sides of your personality in your music. Try to use only one stage name, but remember that you have the freedom to refer to different "characters" and versions of yourself when you sing. Eminem, for example, often refers to himself as "Slim Shady", to express the harsher, meaner side of his personality.
Step 3. Ask for people's opinion
If you can't decide, ask someone you trust for an opinion. Talk to a friend, brother, or other rapper. You don't necessarily have to follow their advice, but what they will tell you can help you form a clearer opinion.
Step 4. Remember that nothing is permanent
In some cases, the best way to get an opinion on something is to try it. You will always be able to change your stage name if the first is unsuccessful.
