Repainting your refrigerator and other large appliances is an easy and inexpensive way to renovate your kitchen. The paint for appliances is available in various colors: white, black, almond, stainless steel, and can be used to repaint your refrigerator in a few simple steps.
Steps
Step 1. Choose a painting method:
you can use the brush or the spray can. The paint suitable for each method can be purchased from the hardware store.
- Using the brush will create less confusion and is the best choice if you are painting the refrigerator inside. However, when the paint has dried, this method may reveal the brush marks, unless you take additional steps to even out the paint with a sponge while it is still fresh.
- Home appliance paint spray cans work like regular paint cans and create a smooth, even layer of paint. Painting an appliance in this way will take you less time, but you will still need to cover the surrounding surfaces with protective plastic sheets, or carry the refrigerator outside before painting it.
Step 2. Unplug the refrigerator from the electrical outlet, and pull it out of any wall / cabinet to expose all sides that need to be painted
Step 3. Thoroughly clean the surface of the refrigerator with water and ammonia to remove any residue of dirt, grease or dust
Let the refrigerator dry on its own for at least an hour, making sure there is no trace of moisture. Do not dry the refrigerator with a soft cloth or towel, as this may leave lint on the surface.
Step 4. Apply a rust inhibitor to each visible stain, thus preventing the rust from spreading further or reappearing beyond the new paint coat
You will be able to purchase a wide range of rust inhibitors from your hardware store.
Step 5. Remove or protect those areas in the refrigerator that should not be painted, such as labels, handles, or rubber liners
Masking tape will do just fine and will be easy to remove from most surfaces.
Step 6. Spread the paint
Check the directions on the package before starting, but in general you should:
- Shake or mix the paint well to remove any lumps;
- Spread the paint in light and even layers, 2-3 coats of paint will guarantee you a uniform finish;
- Allow the paint to dry for 15 minutes between coats;
- Allow the paint to dry for approximately 24 hours before returning the refrigerator to its original location.
Advice
- If you paint indoors, create good ventilation in the work area by opening windows and doors, or using fans.
- You could lightly sand the rust stains with sandpaper, but be careful not to remove any flakes or splinters of paint.
- Lightly sand the surface to make the paint stick better.
