Decorating your home for Christmas is almost as fun as unwrapping presents on the morning of the party. Whether you have guests for a party or want to make your home cozy and warm for your family, this article shows you how to unleash your Christmas spirit by including traditional decorations, making your home's interior and exterior sparkle.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Traditional Decorations
Step 1. Christmas tree
Many consider the tree to be the most important decoration for this party: if you don't wear anything else, get one! Choose both a real one and an artificial one. Place it in the room where you will spend Christmas day. Decorate it according to your personal style. Here are some ideas:
- Hang some lights. A tree illuminated by colored lights is a joy to behold. White fairy lights are in fashion but you can also buy white, red, blue or multicolored lights to hang. Start at the bottom leaving enough thread to reach the nearest outlet. Spin the lights around the spiral tree. Place the other end on a high branch.
- Decorations. You can make your decorations with bread dough, buttons or crystals for a personal touch. You can also buy classic colored balls and more at a store. Spread the decorations evenly over the tree without leaving gaps.
- Add the tip. It is traditional to place a star on the tip, which symbolizes that of David who led the Magi to Jesus. You can also place an angel, a snowflake or other festive decorations.
- Decorate all around. You can buy white fabric to drape. Sprinkle some white glitter to make it look like fallen snow. And during the weeks, place gifts under the tree that you intend to give to loved ones.
Step 2. Hang the socks
Those purchased or handmade stockings on the fireplace, hung on a shelf or in another place are a classic. Use red or green ribbon or string to hang them. Each family member must have their own.
Step 3. Don't forget the mistletoe
You could find some fresh in a greenhouse or even in the woods or in a neighbor's garden, or buy the fake one to hang in the hall. Attach it to a small hook between two rooms. Tie a little red ribbon to make it more festive. And of course it encourages people to kiss underneath.
Part 2 of 3: Exterior Decorations
Step 1. Decorate the door with a Christmas wreath
Buy or make your own wreath from fresh holly or a fragrant evergreen and hang it on the front door. A wreath to welcome guests, indicating to those who pass by that you can breathe the spirit of Christmas in your home.
- If you want a wreath that will last more than a season, make one out of pine cones and felt.
- You can also buy a plastic or metal one to reuse.
Step 2. Hang the outdoor lights
If you have small trees or bushes in your garden, think about a few festoons of outdoor lights. You can buy them in fishnet, simple to arrange on the bushes or a necklace to wrap around some trees. And you can frame the door or windows too.
- You can buy decorative icicle lights to hang on the door.
- Some lights have a timer so they turn off automatically.
Step 3. Create an outdoor Christmas scene
If you really want to give your best, think of some resin or inflatable characters to place in the garden. When people arrive at your house, they will stop and look at what you have set up. Here are the options:
- Nativity. You can simply arrange statues of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus or make an elaborate scene that also includes the Magi, animals and angels.
- Santa Claus and Reindeer. Buy an inflatable and place it on a sled. For an extra touch, add eight reindeer plus Rudolph with a bright red nose.
- Winter scene. Buy an inflatable snowman, Grinch, or other Christmas character to put in the garden. Inflatable snowballs have also become popular lately.
Part 3 of 3: Special Touches
Step 1. Window candle system
If you have a delicate and serene style, put electric candles in each window. Turn them on in the evening so that they can be seen from the outside. It's a great way to decorate your home without breaking the bank or going overboard.
Step 2. Make snowflakes out of the paper
Children like to cut intricate figures. Let them paint the bows with glue and glitter. When they are dry, hang them on the walls and windows with double-sided tape.
Step 3. Use red and green tones
They are the colors of Christmas so anything that respects these colors will give the idea of the party. Be creative using what you already have around the house or get your kids involved to help you create hanging decorations. Here are some ideas for using red and green at home:
- Change your regular pillow covers for red and green ones during the holidays.
- Tie green and red ribbons around the door handles. You can also put bells on it.
- Use some red and green tea towels to spice up your Christmas kitchen.
- Buy a poinsettia to add a touch of natural green and red.
- Place green candles on tables and shelves.
