Gardens can contain flowers, plants, herbs, vegetables and decorative elements. Putting pebbles can enrich the garden with different colors and give it a different look. They can also fill an otherwise empty space, creating a more interesting and aesthetically appealing environment than plain soil or mulch. The pebbles in the garden can also be used for other purposes, such as creating a decorative border or a landscaped path, to cover the ground in an artistic way and to create "stone beds". You can use a mix of stones and rocks as a complement to the greenery in your garden.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare the space to put the pebbles
Measure the space you want to dedicate to this embellishment. Make sure the garden drains properly. The base that will be covered with the pebbles can be earth, sand, grass, pavement or another natural material.
Step 2. Put a protective layer against weeds on top of the earth or other base material that will be covered by the pebbles
A special mat limits the growth of weeds that could reach the stones. It also prevents the soil or other base material you applied from mixing with the stones. You can purchase these mats at garden stores.
Step 3. Choose the pebbles
Usually the most suitable for the garden are mineral fragments with a rounded and smooth shape. They come in many different sizes, colors and shapes. Choose from flat, round or elliptical shapes, or a variety of different types. Pick a suitable color, such as white, pink, or gray, or mix in different shades for your garden.
- If you want a less natural and more polished environment, you can take monochromatic or white onyx stones to give a brighter and more refined look; they are available at garden stores and are more uniform in shape and size.
- Stones of different varieties can be purchased in nurseries, garden equipment stores, for the pool, and even in pet stores.
Step 4. Transport the pebbles to your garden
If you have collected them in a natural environment, such as in the beds of rivers and streams, use a wheelbarrow, if necessary, to transport them to the place where you will put them.
Step 5. Lay them out on the designated area
Place them in the space dedicated specifically to covering stones. Arrange them manually around the plants and flowers, and spread them evenly around the larger areas.
Step 6. Move away from the garden a little to get an overview
The pebbles should give a neat decorative look. Adjust the various spaces, if appropriate, and add more pebbles if needed.
