This article explains how to transfer an ebook to a Kindle (the ebook reader made by Amazon). Ebooks can be copied to a Kindle directly from the Amazon website via a Wi-Fi connection, via e-mail or by connecting the device to the computer via the supplied USB cable (in the latter case the ebook must be at the internal hard drive of your computer).
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Transfer an Ebook from Amazon Over Wi-Fi
Step 1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to the Wi-Fi network
To be able to transfer data, the device must be connected to a working internet connection.
If your Kindle can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, you'll need to transfer data via USB cable
Step 2. Log in to the Amazon website
Visit the URL https://www.amazon.com/ using your computer's browser. If you are already logged in with your account, your main profile page will be displayed.
If you are not logged in yet, select the item Accounts and lists, click on the option Log in and enter your e-mail address and security password.
Step 3. Select the Accounts and Lists item
It is located at the top right of the page. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 4. Click on the My Content and Devices option
It is displayed at the bottom of the drop-down menu that appeared.
Step 5. Select an ebook
Click the check button to the left of the name of the ebook you want to transfer to your Kindle.
You may need to scroll down the list in order to locate and select the ebook of your interest
Step 6. Click the Submit button
It is yellow in color and located at the top left of the page. A new pop-up window will appear.
Step 7. Click on the "Selected Devices" button
It is displayed in the center of the pop-up window that appears. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 8. Select the Kindle you want to send the ebook to
Click on the device name listed in the drop-down menu that appeared.
Step 9. Click the Submit button
It is yellow in color and is located in the lower right corner of the window. This will transfer the selected ebook to your Kindle, provided the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Method 2 of 3: Transfer an Ebook by Email
Step 1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to the Wi-Fi network
To be able to transfer data, the device must be connected to a working internet connection.
If your Kindle can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, you'll need to transfer data via USB cable
Step 2. Log in to the Amazon website
Visit the URL https://www.amazon.com/ using your computer browser. If you are already logged in with your account, your main profile page will be displayed.
If you are not logged in yet, select the item Accounts and lists, click on the option Log in and enter your e-mail address and security password.
Step 3. Select the Accounts and Lists item
It is located at the top right of the page. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 4. Click on the My Content and Devices option
It is displayed at the bottom of the drop-down menu that appeared.
Step 5. Click on the Preferences tab
It is displayed at the top of the page.
Step 6. Scroll down the menu that appeared to be able to select the Personal Document Settings item
It is visible in the lower center of the page. All the settings related to the selected section will be displayed.
Step 7. Click the Add a new approved email address link
It is displayed at the end of the section Personal document settings. A pop-up window will appear.
If you've already created an e-mail address for sending ebooks, make sure it's one of your contact details and it's still active, then skip the next step
Step 8. Add an email address
Type the email address you want to associate with your Kindle, then click the button Add an address.
Step 9. Log into the inbox of the email address of your choice
You can use any of the existing email providers for which you have an active account (for example Gmail).
Step 10. Create an email
Click on the button New one or write, then enter the email address you associated with your Kindle in the "To" text field.
Step 11. Insert the e-book in the email as an attachment
Click on the "Attach file" icon
then select the ebook file you want to transfer to your Kindle.
- You can transfer ebooks in AZW, PDF or MOBI formats. If the file you have is not in one of the formats listed, you will need to convert it before you can send it to your Kindle.
- Most email providers impose a limit of 25MB on the maximum attachment size of an email.
Step 12. Send the message
Click on the button Send. If your Kindle is connected to the Wi-Fi network, the ebook you have chosen will be downloaded directly to your device.
Method 3 of 3: Transfer an Ebook via USB Connection
Step 1. Download an ebook from Amazon
If you have purchased an Amazon ebook that you want to transfer to your Kindle via USB connection, visit the Amazon website, log in if necessary, and follow these instructions:
- Select the item Accounts and lists;
- Click on the option My content and devices;
- Click on the button … placed on the left of the title of the ebook you have chosen;
- Click on the option Download and transfer via USB;
- Select the Kindle from the drop-down menu that appeared;
- Click on the button OK.
Step 2. Convert the ebook if needed
If the file you downloaded isn't already in PDF, AZW, or MOBI format, you'll need to follow these instructions before you can transfer it to your Kindle:
- Visit the website https://www.epubconverter.com/epub-to-mobi-converter/ using your computer browser;
- Select the correct file converter by choosing one of the options displayed on the left side of the page;
- Click on the button Add File …;
- Select the ebook to convert;
- Click on the button You open;
- Click on the button Start Upload;
- Once the conversion is complete, click on the MOBI file link that appeared in the "Download Link" column to download it to your computer.
Step 3. Copy the MOBI file you just downloaded
Click on the MOBI ebook icon to select it, then press the key combination Ctrl + C (on Windows) or ⌘ Command + C (on Mac) to copy the file.
Step 4. Connect the Kindle to the computer
Plug one end of the USB cable you use to charge your Kindle into the connection port on your device, then plug the other end into a free USB port on your computer.
If you're using a Mac, you may need to purchase a USB 3.0 to USB-C adapter, as most modern Macs don't come with USB ports
Step 5. Log in to your Kindle on your computer
The procedure to follow varies depending on the operating system of your computer:

Windows - access the menu Start
click on the item File Explorer
click on the option This PC, then double-click the Kindle name.

Mac - open a Finder
then click the Kindle name displayed in the left pane of the window. The Kindle icon may also have appeared on the desktop.
Step 6. Go to the "Documents" folder
Double-click on the "Documents" or "Internal Documents" folder in the window corresponding to the Kindle's internal memory.
- To perform this step, you may need to first unlock your Kindle and double-click the "Internal Storage" folder.
- If you are using a Kindle Fire, you will need to access the "Books" folder instead of the one indicated.
Step 7. Paste the MOBI file into the Kindle
Click on an empty spot inside the indicated folder, then press the key combination Ctrl + V (on Windows) or ⌘ Command + V (on Mac).
Step 8. Wait for the MOBI file to be completely copied to your Kindle
When the light on your Kindle stops blinking, you can continue.
Step 9. Disconnect the Kindle from the computer
Before physically disconnecting it from the system, eject the device using the wizard to prevent the files it contains from becoming corrupted. Follow these instructions:

Windows - click on the icon
located in the lower right corner of the desktop, click on the USB key icon, then click on the option Eject present in the menu that appeared.

Mac - click on the "Eject" icon
located to the right of the Kindle name displayed in the Finder window.
