Whether you're completely renovating a room or just want to replace the door, the process is quick and easy, requiring only a few tools, most of which can be rented if you don't have them. Read on to learn how to install an interior door.
These instructions are for a pre-assembled door, or for a door that is already hinged to the frame. If, on the other hand, you have a rough door to assemble, consult this article.
Steps
Step 1. Buy the door
Buy a door that is the right size for the opening in the wall. Doors usually have a standard size of 60 to 90cm wide. The frame is always about 5cm wider than the door (excluding the jamb), in order to level the door after having assembled it.
Step 2. Start drawing the lines
Draw a plumb line on the wall. It measures approximately 12mm from the inside of the subframe, on the side where the hinges will go. Using a spirit level, draw a line on the wall. You can also use a laser level, which is simpler and more precise. Many models can be hung on the wall.
Step 3. Attach the anchoring brackets to the frame
Put 6 anchors on the outside of the jambs, i.e. the frame on which the door is pre-mounted. The anchors must be placed at the height of the three hinges, three on one side and three on the other. The first should be about 35 cm from the top, the second at the height of the lock and the third 35 cm from the bottom.
Step 4. Insert the frame into the opening by resting it on shims
Put a 1cm shim under the door if you intend to put a carpet or install parquet, or just half a centimeter if you will install a normal floor. Never mount the door without shims before you have finished the floor.
Step 5. Secure the anchors
Using the line drawn on the wall, screw the anchor at the top, on the hinge side. Then pin down the other 2 using the same line. After fixing the first 3 anchors, the door is level. Now check the light (the space between the door and the jamb) before fixing the other 3 anchors. Start at the top, checking the space, then stare at the other two as well. The door is now perfectly fitted and the shims can be removed from underneath.
Step 6. Install the trim around the door
Trim strips are used to cover fasteners and hinges if installed correctly. Choose the right upholstery for the door and mount it at 45 degree angles, or choose another style.
Advice
- Use quick anchors.
- You may need to adjust the inclination of the jamb when fixing the last anchors. Just unscrew them so you can move them, and then screw them back.
- When mounting a solid wood door, remove the supplied screws in the hinges and replace them with longer screws to increase the stability of the door. Even shimming the door from below after anchoring it will increase its tightness.
