The bohemian style, sometimes abbreviated to "boho" or "boho chic", established itself in the sixties and seventies, but it is possible to trace its roots even further back in time. Its essence is represented by soft and light fabrics, which convey an idea of freedom. It also gives importance to issues such as ecology, so natural fibers and used clothes are preferred. If you want to flaunt this style, find out how to introduce it into your wardrobe. But remember one thing: to adopt it, it is of primary importance to look for clothing that makes you feel in harmony with yourself and with nature, so don't think that there are absolute rules for dressing in boho style.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Dressing in Bohemian Style
Step 1. Dress in layers
You should create a relaxed gypsy-inspired look. To show off an authentic bohemian style, you must therefore dress in layers. Boho was influenced by gypsies and hippies: traveling with everything they owned, they wore their clothing in layers to keep warm and avoid carrying more clothing than necessary.
- For example, you can wear a bralette under a loose-fitting top, or a loose tunic and jacket. You can also layer all of these garments.
- Dressing like this has another advantage: if you are hot or cold, you can always remove or add a layer as needed.
Step 2. Choose clothing that is one size larger and has soft lines
Freedom and lightness are two key factors for showing off a bohemian style. You can wear skirts, but also tunics and light sweaters. Choose everything that makes you feel free and comfortable.
- You can also look for loose-fitting dresses, to which you can add layers under or on top for a relaxed look.
- Try to layer your clothes towards the bust. They need to draw attention to the face. If you create a lot of layers on the lower body (for example by wearing a pair of pants under a skirt), you will draw attention downwards, weighing down the result.
Step 3. Make loose clothing stand out by using one or two tight-fitting garments
If you want, you can definitely only wear loose-fitting clothes, but you can also wear tight-fitting clothing. For example, if you are wearing a very loose tunic, you can combine it with a pair of tight leggings: they will create shapes and at the same time highlight the tunic.
Step 4. Look for second hand clothes
A true bohemian is unlikely to buy brand new clothing. In fact, the style focuses on the use of vintage clothing and respect for the environment. Take a trip to the flea market or the nearest thrift store - you'll probably get good deals and you might even find original clothes from the 60s or 70s, which will add a unique touch to your boho wardrobe.
- If you know how to sew, you could make clothes yourself using fabrics and prints that you like.
- If you buy new clothes, don't go to trendy shops (like H&M), opt for independent shops, where you can find out how and when the clothes were made. They will certainly cost more, but they are also likely to be of better quality and last much longer.
Step 5. Choose natural fabrics
Since the boho style places a lot of importance on harmony with nature, you should look for garments made of natural fibers, such as hemp, linen and cotton. You could also include dresses made of chiffon, lace, or silk.
- Avoid fabrics like polyester, made of synthetic materials.
- Look for fair trade fabrics, with ethical certification. If you are unsure and the clerk is unable to give you information, you can search the internet for brands that are committed to making their clothes with fair trade fabrics.
Part 2 of 3: Bohemian Style Hair and Makeup
Step 1. Show off long, soft waves
If you have naturally wavy hair, then just wash it and let it air dry. You can control frizz by applying a dab of mousse when they are damp. If they aren't wavy, you can still have some soft waves by applying some mousse and / or texturizing spray before drying them with the diffuser.
- When drying your hair with the diffuser, stand upside down and adjust the hair dryer to let out a blast of cool air. While drying, "crumple" them with your hands to encourage the formation of waves.
- If you have spaghetti-like hair that refuses to curl, don't despair - long, straight locks are also perfect for the bohemian style.
Step 2. Try making braids
It is another ideal hairstyle for the bohemian style. If you have hair that is long enough to braid, do a crown braid for a more elaborate look, but you can also opt for a simple braid.
- Remember that the key is to have a messy, relaxed look, so don't worry if the braid isn't perfect. In fact, if it were, you would have to undo it slightly to have a less tidy hairstyle.
- If you can't do braids, but still want to pull your hair up, apply some texturizing mousse or spray before making a messy bun.
Step 3. Try to have a simple trick
The boho style is essentially very natural and fresh. If you don't want to wear makeup, don't do it: the soap and water look is the most natural there is. In any case, if you want to wear makeup, remember that bold styles are out of the question.
If you decide not to wear makeup, apply a moisturizer with an SPF before going out. The skin will be fresh and protected from UV rays
Step 4. Use an illuminating foundation
If you have blemishes that you want to cover, opt for a light, highlighter foundation. You will have dewy skin, a result that any woman covets.
Apply a thin layer of foundation all over your face. It only takes a little to cover imperfections, remember that makeup doesn't have to look heavy
Step 5. Apply a thin coat of bronzer
The bohemian style emphasizes communion with nature. This means spending more time outdoors, so it would be normal to have a "sun kissed" effect. Applying a little bronzer on your cheekbones and forehead will allow you to achieve this, plus it will give you a fresh and healthy complexion.
However, use the bronzer sparingly. A veil is enough to have a healthy complexion
Step 6. Neutral eye makeup
If you want to flaunt a bohemian style, avoid the cat and smokey makeup. It would be better to leave them natural, but if you want to apply a line of pencil or mascara, choose neutral tones and that resemble the colors of the earth, such as olive green and brown.
A thin line of eyeliner is enough to highlight the eyes, so don't draw a thick one. Apply light strokes of mascara
Step 7. Use natural colors on your lips if you want to put makeup on them
Even a conditioner with SPF is enough. If you want a pop of color, you should avoid bright ones, like red and pink. Instead, prefer neutral or peach tones: they color the lips, but also allow for a natural result.
Choosing the right neutral lipstick depends on your skin tone and undertone
Part 3 of 3: Accessories
Step 1. Apply nail polish if you like to use it
You can also be a little more daring. Broadly speaking, the bohemian style is inspired by simplicity and naturalness, but you can be a little bolder with your nails, for example by using a metallic gold or bronze polish. You can also choose a neutral color for a natural result.
You don't have to wear nail polish. If you don't want to, you don't have to
Step 2. Bring accessories
If you wear very discreet clothes, you can add some bold accessories, but choose them in natural tones and avoid the plastic ones. Instead, look for leather items (but avoid them if you're vegan!), Shells, beads, and woven threads.
You can also choose turquoise and wood. If you have a hard time finding accessories in this style, take a trip to the flea market or thrift store
Step 3. Choose handcrafted items
Since the bohemian style places importance on ecology, try to buy handmade accessories. Avoid the ones you see in the usual low quality shops. Instead, go to an artisan market, where artists sell their creations, and look for jewelry among the stalls.
If there are no artisan markets in your city, look for shops dedicated to fair trade. They usually sell food and household goods, but sometimes they also offer a small selection of accessories
Step 4. Use belts, scarves and hats to complete the look
If you think you are missing something, try adding one of these accessories. A scarf can be used in many ways; you can wear it around your neck, rest it on your shoulders or wrap it around your waist like a belt. If you have a wide and original belt, combine it with a long and soft shirt to define the body.
If one day you wake up with untamable hair, put on a wide-brimmed hat or cap to cover it up. Dressing in layers is one of the main features of the bohemian style, so adding a few extra accessories can actually complete the look
Advice
- Remember that you should do what you like best. When trying to follow a trend, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Look for clothes that make you feel good about yourself and you can't go wrong.
- Don't worry if you can't always dress right. Finding your own style means experimenting, so it's normal to make mistakes.
