Commercial dyes, in addition to being expensive, are rich in chemicals and irritants. In addition, many people are allergic to professional dyes or ready-made dyes you buy at the supermarket. Fortunately, however, it is possible to use natural products such as coffee, tea, fruit and vegetables to dye your hair. Remember that these methods are semi-permanent and that the color fades after a few shampoos. This article will tell you how to dye your hair with different all-natural products.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Darken the Hair
Step 1. Use coffee and a leave-in conditioner
Coffee is a wonderful and inexpensive natural product for darkening hair. Be sure to buy organic coffee though, as regular coffee can contain other chemicals.
- Make a very concentrated coffee that is too strong to drink; opt for an espresso and dark roasted coffee for a stronger dye.
- Let it cool down so you don't burn your skin.
- Mix 500 ml of leave-in conditioner (which therefore does not require rinsing) with 30 g of organic coffee beans and 250 ml of very strong espresso coffee. Mix the ingredients in a non-metal bowl - metal can spoil the color.
- Apply the mixture to your hair using a bottle with a special applicator that you can buy at personal care stores.
- Leave the mixture on for an hour, then rinse. Now your hair will be a beautiful chocolate color.
Step 2. Make a coffee-based tincture
For best results, this procedure should be repeated several times.
- Wash your hair with shampoo, then pour strong (cooled) coffee on your head.
- Leave it on for 20 minutes.
- Rinse with apple cider vinegar, which removes the coffee and helps set the color.
- Repeat rinses as many times as needed to get a darker color.
Step 3. Make a black walnut tint
You can use the shell or powdered nuts. The shell will create a more powerful tint which however also tends to stain.
- If using shells, crush them and immerse them in boiling water. Let them soak for three days.
- If you use walnut powder instead, boil some water with 80 g of powder (depending on the intensity of color you want to achieve). Let the mixture steep for a few hours, or even longer if you prefer a darker effect.
- Apply the mixture to your hair; leave it on for at least 20 minutes and let the hair dry naturally. The color should now be several tones darker.
Step 4. Make a sage and rosemary tea
This method is perfect for covering gray hair.
- Mix equal parts sage and rosemary in a bowl containing 250ml of hot water;
- Leave the aromas to infuse for at least 10 minutes;
- Filter the water;
- Use the liquid to rinse your hair by repeating the application every day until you get the desired tone.
Step 5. Make a very strong black tea tint
This method is ideal if you have dark hair and want to darken it.
- Put three black tea bags in 500ml of boiling water;
- Leave them to infuse for 5 minutes and wait for the tea to cool;
- Apply the liquid to your hair using an applicator bottle. Leave it on for about an hour and rinse;
- To cover gray hair, add sage (the same amount as tea) to the water and let it steep.
Method 2 of 3: Lighten and Add Highlights
Step 1. Create golden highlights with chamomile
Chamomile is a natural and very effective lightening substance.
- Infuse the chamomile tea bags in boiling water for at least 30 minutes.
- Shampoo and pat your hair dry with a towel;
- Pour the chamomile on your hair and let it dry;
- Repeat the application for several days until the desired color is obtained.
Step 2. Use lemon to lighten hair
This method works slowly and only if done several times.
- Apply pure lemon juice to your hair. The lemon will act as a natural bleach.
- The lightening effect can be intensified by exposing the treated hair to sunlight.
- Be patient - it will take several applications before you see results.
Step 3. Make turmeric, calendula and chamomile tea
Turmeric is a bright yellow spice widely used in Indian cooking and for dyeing fabrics.
- Add turmeric, calendula and chamomile in equal parts to boiling water;
- Leave them to infuse for 20 minutes, then filter everything;
- Apply the mixture on your hair, leave it on for 15-20 minutes and rinse;
- Repeat as many times as you like for best results.
Step 4. Create some brilliant highlights with rhubarb root and warm water
You will need to use dry rhubarb root extract for this method.
- Blanch 45-60 g of dry rhubarb root extract in 1 liter of water for 20 minutes. Do not breathe the vapor.
- Leave the mixture to infuse overnight and filter it the following morning;
- Pour the mixture into your hair by dropping the liquid into a bucket. Repeat the application two or three times.
- Let your hair dry naturally without rinsing.
Method 3 of 3: Accentuate the Red and the Highlights
Step 1. Accentuate the red with paprika and rose hip
Paprika is a reddish spice that can highlight red hair or red highlights.
- Prepare a rosehip-based herbal tea, leaving it to infuse in boiling water;
- Let it cool;
- Prepare a paste to apply on the hair with the herbal tea and paprika. To facilitate application, it is recommended to use an applicator brush, which you can buy at personal care stores.
- Leave the mixture on for at least 30 minutes, then rinse;
Step 2. Apply beet and carrot juice
This method is very simple, however, for best results, you need to repeat the application several times.
- Mix equal parts beet and carrot juice;
- Apply the mixture all over the hair massaging carefully;
- Leave it on for at least 60 minutes, then rinse.
- This method is recommended for accentuating red hair.
- On blonde hair, the result will tend to be a bright strawberry blonde.
Step 3. Use rose hips to add a reddish tone to the hair
To do this, simply prepare a very strong herbal tea with dried rose hips.
- Boil 500 ml of water;
- Add 200 g of rose hips;
- Leave it to infuse until the water turns a deep red;
- Let it cool, then filter the mixture;
- Massage into the hair and leave on for 20 minutes; rinse.
- Repeat the application as needed.
