How can you reduce the amount of energy your home consumes? How can you make your home eco-friendly while respecting a limited budget?
Steps
Step 1. Go to the internet
Step 2. Find an energy calculator to determine how much you are currently using
Find one that takes into account some energy parameters of your region. Some calculators are able to automatically tell you the energy efficiency of your home. It would be very useful if the site could generate a graph or a count that demonstrates the potential savings you can achieve, after making some changes to the home.
Step 3. Install the skylights to the ceiling
They allow natural sunlight to enter and illuminate all rooms for free, even those that are darker. The sun is more powerful than any light bulb, reaching almost every corner of the room. Or put in some solar-powered lamps that will provide light.
Step 4. Install the solar panels
This way you will get energy to use in many ways; you can heat the water for example. Solar energy is pure clean energy. You can also transfer the excess energy you produce to batteries, to use it later; however these could considerably increase the cost of the plant based on their capacity. Silos store water heated by the sun for whatever use you want to make of it, from shower to tea.
Step 5. Use low voltage light bulbs
It is a great way to save energy. They fit all lamps and use less electricity. Some are even brighter than traditional light bulbs and consume less.
Step 6. Consider installing motion sensors both inside and outside the house
This way you avoid having the lights on when you leave a room. Outdoor ones allow you to save a lot of money by lighting the driveway and entrance only when necessary. They are also deterrents for thieves because the sudden switching on of the light is disconcerting when unexpected.
Step 7. Choose to install low-flow toilets
They use less water but perform the same function as normal ones. Obviously you will save on your water bill.
Step 8. Be self-reliant
Advice
- Turn off everything (lights, air conditioner etc …) when you leave the house.
- If you use motion lights, set a timer if you need to leave them on for a while for any reason.
