Oranges, and other juicy fruits like pineapple or watermelon, are perfect for soaking up vodka. The oranges in vodka are an easy to prepare infusion, elegant to serve and with a noticeably enhanced taste; they can be used to coat a cake, to give that extra touch to a fruit salad, to garnish a dessert or to be served with ice cream. Another delicious use is by replacing normal oranges with vodka-coated ones to prepare an alcoholic orange marmalade.
Ingrediants
People:
2 to 4
- 2 oranges
- 240 ml of vodka
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Peel the oranges raw
When you peel the oranges, you peel the pulp of the oranges completely so that it absorbs a lot more vodka. This is an essential step, otherwise the slices will not be able to absorb enough vodka through the coating or through the albedo, the typical white part of the citrus peel.
Step 1. Place the oranges on a cutting board and cut both ends with a kitchen knife
Step 2. Cut off the peel, including the albedo
Step 3. Cut the orange wedges raw, one side at a time
Step 4. Discard the peel and membranes
Step 5. Put the orange pulp in a sterilized jar
Part 2 of 3: Infuse the oranges
The orange pulp will absorb quite a bit of vodka, so be careful not to overdo it when eating the finished product.
Step 1. Pour the vodka over the oranges until the jar is completely full
Step 2. Screw the lid on until it is tightly closed
Step 3. Leave the oranges to steep in vodka for 2 to 4 hours, on the counter or in the refrigerator
Step 4. Empty the jar into a bowl by passing it through a sieve
The vodka will go into the bowl while the oranges will remain in the sieve.
Part 3 of 3: Serve the oranges
Step 1. Serve the oranges in a serving bowl
The portion for each person ranges from 1/2 to 1 orange approximately. Garnish the oranges with freshly whipped cream.
Advice
- To give oranges a creamier taste, use vanilla vodka.
- If you want to reuse the orange-flavored vodka you sifted earlier, strain it through a coffee filter (or strainer) to remove pulp residue before drinking or using it for a recipe.
