Becoming a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant is easy enough, but learning how to sell Mary Kay products takes a little more time and effort. With some consistency, however, you can earn a decent amount of money doing this job.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Becoming a Beauty Consultant
Step 1. Find a consultant who works for Mary Kay
If you already know a Mary Kay consultant, you can go to her for help. However, if you don't know any, you can search for them in your area using Mary Kay's website.
- Mary Kay beauty consultants receive benefits when they recruit new people, so most existing ones will be more than happy to help you become a consultant too.
-
This company does not officially sell in Italy, but browsing the web you can find many Mary Kay consultants scattered around the boot.
- For example, you can get some information by clicking on this page and on this other one.
- If, on the other hand, you don't live in Italy, go to Mary Kay's website, enter your postcode in the "New to Mary Kay?" and click on "Search". Choose a consultant from the list to view their profile. Feel free to choose from all the results that appear until you find a consultant you feel comfortable with.
Step 2. Talk to your advisor
If you already have a relationship with a consultant, please contact them directly using any contact method you are used to. If you don't know one yet, you can contact the consultants through the personal profile they have on the Mary Kay website.
- From the consultant's profile, click on the "Learn how to become a Beauty Consultant" link.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page until you read "Let's Start Your Success Story Today". By clicking on this link, you will be redirected to a messaging page.
- Use the form to send a message to your consultant. Tell him that you want to become one too. Most usually get back to you within a day or two with the necessary information.
Step 3. Purchase a starter kit
The standard price of a Mary Kay starter kit is $ 100 plus shipping and taxes, but there are occasional sales and special offers that you can take advantage of. From 2014 inside the starter kit you will find material worth $ 400.
- You will need to purchase the starter kit through your Mary Kay beauty consultant.
- Each starter kit contains retail products to use for demonstration purposes, samples to share with potential customers, brochures and informational DVDs.
Step 4. Study the kit
Take your time to order the instructions and guides provided in the starter kit. You will find several DVDs and CDs along with brochures and booklets with helpful sales tips.
Step 5. Attend a training meeting
Each Mary Kay consultant is part of a unit. To help you sell, we recommend that you go to a training meeting with the director of the unit.
- Note that you can choose to attend several weekly meetings before selling. In addition to teaching good entrepreneurial skills, these meetings are designed to encourage counselors belonging to a unit to have positive attitudes, friendship and mutual support. Training is never mandatory in the Mary Kay company, but it is highly recommended for success and confidence in carrying out this business. You can also receive online training through a large source of visual content promoted by the company Mary Kay Inc., at marykayintouch.com (you must be a consultant to use this resource).
- If your manager is out of town or otherwise unable to assist you, he or she should be able to direct you to an "adoptive" manager with whom you will have the opportunity to work instead.
Step 6. Get to work
Once you have completed all the steps described, you will be a Mary Kay beauty consultant with products and the right training. The next thing you need to do is start selling.
You may be encouraged to procure supplies shortly after entering Mary Kay. Stocks are NEVER an obligation in Mary Kay, but a privilege. It's like a grocery store stocking up and cataloging the products on its shelves before opening, whereby customers can take home what they want to buy TODAY, rather than waiting a week for the product to be ordered from the company. Direct sales firms rarely allow their consultants to hold stock, but Mary Kay offers this privilege. Take your time when you have to decide and start smart, buying only what you sell in the hours you work. Ask your recruiter or manager to show you stats about the smartest way to get inventory, based on the number of hours per week or month you plan to spend on this business. The more time you spend on your business, the more you will sell and the more inventory you will want to have on hand. The company offers free product bonuses on your first stock purchase, so be sure to ask your recruiter for them, so you don't regret after missing out on free product bonuses. Mary Kay offers a 1 year guarantee to redeem 90% of the first purchased stock, but beware that you will never be able to be a Mary Kay consultant again if you send them back to the company (NB: this is not the 100% satisfaction guarantee. Mary Kay stands behind all her products and replaces them for free and always, if the consultant or client is not satisfied)
Part 2 of 3: Fundamental Selling Strategies
Step 1. Distribute the samples
The starter kit comes with samples that you can give to others and with retail products that you can use for demonstrations. Also, you can buy more samples and demonstration products when you need them.
- Samples allow potential customers to try out products before purchasing them. By showing shoppers the uniqueness of a product, you will be able to convince them to buy it.
- Be generous, but smart. Giving away free samples to random people is a great way to get rid of products, but not to get more customers. When you can, engage a prospect in a conversation first. If she seems interested, give her a sample. If not, thank her for taking the time and move on.
Step 2. Organize meetings and sessions
A Mary Kay facial is all about teaching skin care. At the same time, you can share Mary Kay products (sales) and, if you wish, the opportunity to join Mary Kay (recruiting). Facial treatment for 5 women is as easy as it is for one, so invite friends and family to a small meeting or skincare session and encourage them to bring more acquaintances. Afterwards, you can ask one or more of them to host a meeting, inviting their friends and having a small party at home, after which you will offer some gifts to the hostess to thank her (often free products or discounts).
Step 3. Meet with prospects personally
It is advisable to follow each person who attended the meeting in order to address their particular needs and build a better relationship with them. If she invites her friends to her date at home, you can offer each of the gifts for the hostess.
Before each facial or session, contact each guest to discuss their beauty needs and the best make-up techniques to use based on their skin tone, face shape and other characteristics
Step 4. Manage your online presence
Through Mary Kay you can request the opening of a personal website through which to promote your beauty consultant business for only $ 30 the first year and $ 60 for the following year. It is fully operated by Mary Kay and will look almost exactly like the company's official website at marykay.com. Your personal website will enable your customers to make their purchases directly online through your profile. To maintain Mary Kay's professional image, you are not allowed to create a personal site other than that offered by Mary Kay. However, you will be able to advertise on social networks, if you follow the guidelines carefully in order to protect the image of the company.
- Through your website you can also make limited offers, publish digital catalogs via social media and send newsletters to customers who have signed up.
- Your website also gives you access to personal customer information (birthday, order history, etc.). You can use this information to give personalized recommendations and place special offers, but remember that it is illegal to sell such information.
Step 5. Distribute the catalog
Leave product catalogs to potential customers. You could also ask your hairdresser for permission to leave one in their shop. Make sure each catalog you leave contains contact information so anyone looking to make a purchase knows how to contact you.
In addition to catalogs, you can take advantage of postcards, flyers, brochures and business cards. This material will also need to be purchased by the company or another company promoting it, to protect Mary Kay's professional image
Part 3 of 3: Other Tricks of the Trade
Step 1. Meet your neighbors
Once you start selling, spread the word among the neighbors. Talk to those who already know you and introduce yourself to new ones.
- When someone moves into your neighborhood, give them a welcome bag with some Mary Kay samples and your business card.
- Likewise, when someone settles in a new neighborhood, introduce them and give them a free sample and business card.
Step 2. Use Mary Kay's nose:
Mary Kay Ash told consultants to "Give, not Take". Be kind and courteous and always follow this golden rule. Remember to share what you love, not to sell what you intend to get rid of. Typically a consultant sells what they love, so use any Mary Kay products you love and don't be afraid to try new ones. Behave like street advertisements: keep looking good, have good taste, follow the skin care principles provided by Mary Kay, use her cosmetics and perfumes. Any comments you receive are a chance for you to share the products you love. Offer to schedule a facial if people are interested.
Step 3. It is not legal to advertise your business by making Mary Kay look like a bad company
Write on the refrigerator, on your profile or anywhere else that it is unprofessional "to sell off Mary Kay". Mary Kay products are of excellent quality and the retail price charged by the company is already only a fraction of the price of the department store brands, so advertising discounts must be a rather rare thing.
- Organize birthday sales. For example, offer a 10-30% discount for customers who place orders during their birth month.
-
Consider giving free gift wrapping for products purchased during a special occasion, such as Mother's Day or Christmas. To increase sales and avoid feeling overwhelmed, specify that the customer must purchase a certain amount to get the offer.
- When you are a consultant, you can buy anything you want for personal use, even at a 50% discount. Likewise, you can make Christmas, birthday, etc. gifts beyond the supplies you buy from Mary Kay. This will give friends and family the opportunity to use and take advantage of Mary Kay products, which they can eventually buy from you if they want.
Step 4. Turn any occasion into a Mary Kay party
Stealing the show isn't such a nice thing to do, but that doesn't mean you can't take advantage of a meeting of people to quickly spread the word about the products you're selling. You can randomly share how much you love a product (take it with you in your bag and they can try it out).
Step 5. Use your creativity when giving out advertising material
Leave catalogs, flyers and business cards in every possible place. It is right to use any public space to advertise.
- Association bulletin boards are also places where you can leave flyers and business cards.
- Leave catalogs in bars, gyms or beauty salons. Make sure you have the shop owner's permission, though.
- When you recycle old Mary Kay catalogs, attach a sticker that says "For a more recent catalog, please call me at…".
- Stick flyers under car windshield wipers outside local shops and restaurants, but make sure it doesn't look hateful or give a shoddy image.
Step 6. Give something
A great way to make a big impression is to leave something special for those who don't expect it. Make sure that any samples you give are accompanied by your business card so that the recipient knows how to get in touch with you if she likes what she received and wants more.
- When you tip a waitress, attach a free sample and business card. Also try to give her a nice tip, but never replace it with a Mary Kay product.
- Prepare "spa baskets" or "coffee break baskets" and donate them to companies in your area. They should contain samples, catalogs and business cards, along with other interesting goodies, such as muffins or packages of instant coffee.
Step 7. Reward customers when they recommend you to other people
Let current customers know that you are willing to give them something extra if they recommend you to other potential buyers. This will encourage them to expand your network of acquaintances.
-
One way to offer a reward for referring you is to credit a series of one-time bonuses on subsequent orders. You can offer a bonus with an amount, for example € 0, 50 or € 1, or a percentage, such as 5% or so.
Warnings
- Know what you are getting involved in. There are a ton of benefits associated with selling Mary Kay products. You can set your own schedules, work from home and much more. However, the business itself isn't as easy as you might be led to believe. If you dedicate yourself once in a while, at best expect to earn once in a while. Only by taking this opportunity seriously will you be able to increase your income.
- You know the game. You can make money simply by selling Mary Kay products, but if you want to make a career in the company, you will need to recruit other consultants. If you want to become a sales manager or get the chance to rent a pink Mary Kay Cadillac, then you need to be able to hire an impressive team of consultants.
