There are tons of items in Oblivion. If you like to collect everything, you could find yourself in a very short time too burdened by the loot you carry. In some cases it is better to leave something you don't need on the ground and continue your adventure. You can throw objects on the ground anywhere in the world, or put them inside containers.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Throwing the Objects on the Ground
Step 1. Open the inventory
You can do this by opening the Journal, then going to the Inventory page.
- PC: Press Tab ↹ to open the Journal, then click on the Fist next to the health, magic and stamina bars.
- Xbox 360: press B., then use the buttons LT/RT to move from page to page until the inventory is opened.
- PS3: press OR, then use the buttons L1/R1 to move from page to page until the inventory is opened.
Step 2. Throw an object on the ground
You can drop any item in your inventory to lighten the load. Select the equipment to throw away, then press the appropriate command:
- PC: Shift + Click on the item to throw, or drag it out of the inventory window.
- Xbox 360: select the item you want to throw and press X.
- PS3: select the item you want to throw and press □.
Step 3. Take an item you have thrown away
In addition to throwing equipment on the ground, you can also pick it up. This allows you to hold the object in front of you as long as you hold the button to grab it. Taking something is not the same as using it or equipping it, it just allows you to move it into the game world.
- PC: Click and hold on the item you want to collect. Release the left mouse button to let it fall to the ground.
- Xbox 360: select the item you want to collect. Hold down LB. Release the button to drop the object.
- PS3: select the item you want to collect. Hold down L2. Release the button to drop the object.
Part 2 of 3: Putting Items into Containers
Step 1. Find a container to put your items in
You can put anything in almost any container, but keep in mind that your belongings will not always be safe and secure. There is no precise logic that determines whether a container is safe. To check, put a small item inside a container and wait 73 hours inside the game world. If the object is still present, the container is safe.
Step 2. Interact with the container to open it
To put an object inside a container, you must first open it. Center the character's view on it and press the Use button:
- PC: Space bar
- Xbox 360: TO
- PS3: ✕
Step 3. Move from inventory to container
Once the container is open, you can switch from the menu that shows what's inside it to your personal inventory.
- PC: click the left Sack icon for your inventory, otherwise the right Sack icon for the container. You can also press Shift + ← / → to switch between them.
- Xbox 360: press LT to open your inventory e RT to view the container.
- PS3: press L1 to open inventory e R1 for the container.
Step 4. Select the object you want to move
This way you can put it wherever you like. For example, selecting something from the inventory will put it in the container and do the opposite by selecting the objects in the container.
- PC: click with the left mouse button on the object you want to move, or select it and press Enter.
- Xbox 360: select the object you want to move and press TO.
- PS3: select the object you want to move and press ✕.
Part 3 of 3: Knowing What to Throw Out and What to Sell
Step 1. Avoid leaving valuables on the ground
When you open your inventory, you will see the Gold column. This is the value of the item, although you won't be able to get that exact amount from merchants if you haven't upgraded the Trader skill. Try selling or using those items instead of throwing them away.
Step 2. Leave small items that weigh more on the ground
The column with the Feather indicates the weight of an object. Throwing away a single heavy armor can allow you to keep many other lighter items.
Step 3. Store valuables somewhere instead of throwing them away
If you don't want to sell something, but can't keep carrying it around, find a safe place to put it so it doesn't disappear.
- You can usually throw items on the ground without fear of them disappearing. This only works on the main map (not inside dungeons) and enemies may pick up the weapons they find.
- Torn sacks, shells, and sacks of grain are safe containers, as are those inside homes that you can buy.
