This wikiHow teaches you how to name an animal or creature (also known as a "mob") in Minecraft, using a name tag.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Acquire a Nameplate
Step 1. Get the supplies to build an anvil
Later, you will need this item to personalize the nameplate. To build it, you need the following materials:
- Three iron blocks. Each iron block requires nine iron ingots, for a total of 27 ingots.
- Four iron ingots. These bars bring the required total to 31.
- You can make iron ingots by placing blocks of iron ore, the gray stone with brown to orange stains, inside a coal-fired furnace.
Step 2. Open the workbench
A 3x3 grid will open.
If you don't already have a workbench available, you can create one by placing a plank of wood in each box of the inventory creation grid
Step 3. Create the anvil
To do this, place the three iron blocks in the top row of the workbench grid, three of the four iron ingots in the bottom row and the final one in the center. Pick up the anvil from the left square.
- If you are using the PE version of Minecraft, press the black anvil icon on the left side of the screen.
- If you are using the console version of Minecraft, select the anvil button in the "Structures" tab.
Step 4. Be aware that it is not possible to manufacture the tags
You can only find them in one of three ways: by fishing, trading and opening chests.
Step 5. Build a fishing rod
To do this, you will need three sticks and two pieces of string.
You can also combine two damaged barrels to get a working one
Step 6. Fish until you find a tag
To do this, cast the line by right-clicking (or tapping your device screen or pressing the left trigger on the pad) while your character is facing a body of water, with the fishing rod equipped. When the float drops below the surface of the water and you hear the sound of something sinking, press the button again to cast the line.
- You will likely catch a lot of fish and other useless items before you find a tag, as they are quite rare.
- The Luck of the Sea spell can help you.
Step 7. Ask a villager for a nameplate
Villages are randomly generated structures in the world of Minecraft. If you know the location of one of these settlements and have a lot of emeralds, you could save time by purchasing a nameplate instead of trying to fish for it.
To speak to a villager, face him and right-click (either tap your device screen or press the left trigger on the pad)
Step 8. Search dungeons, mines or forest mansions
Chests within these areas have a fairly high chance of holding a tag. Since these are randomly generated structures, this method of finding tags is extremely inefficient (and dangerous).
You can search for structures thanks to the tricks, using the locate command
Part 2 of 2: Create a Custom Nameplate
Step 1. Make sure you are at least level 1
Your experience level, indicated by the toll-free number that appears at the bottom of the screen, must be at least 1 to manufacture a personalized nameplate.
Step 2. Place the anvil on the ground
When you do, you will hear a loud sound of scrap metal.
Step 3. Equip the nameplate
To do this, open the inventory and move the object to the toolbar, then select it. The tag will appear in your character's hand.
Step 4. Select the anvil
The anvil creation window will open, with the tag inside.
Step 5. Write a name to engrave on the tag
You can do this in the "Name" field located at the top of the anvil window.
In the console edition, you will first need to select the "Name" field and press A or X
Step 6. Select the tag
This way, you will put it back in your inventory.
Step 7. Equip the custom nameplate
Once you've wielded it, you can name a mob.
In the console edition of Minecraft, just select the nameplate and press Y or Δ
Step 8. Find an animal or monster
You must be careful if you try to name a hostile monster (such as a zombie), while taking no chances to rename a sheep or a cow.
Step 9. Look at the mob and select it
If you have the tag in your hand, a text field with your chosen name will appear above the creature's head.
Advice
- If you haven't used the nameplate yet, you can change the name you engraved.
- You cannot give mob names with special formatting.
- Once a hostile monster is named, it will not disappear, but it can still die.
