Microsoft Word has a button to enable and disable the paragraph symbol represented by the ¶ sign. This button belongs to the category called "formatting marks". Step 1. Go to the Home tab or the main toolbar, depending on the version of Word you are using

In newer versions of Word, the "Show / Hide Formatting" button is located on the "Home" tab in the "Paragraph" section of the toolbar. In earlier versions of Word the button should be on the main toolbar.

Step 2. Identify the "Show / Hide Formatting" button

The "Show / Hide Formatting" button appears as a paragraph mark (¶). In general, this sign is located in the upper right corner of the "Paragraph" section in the toolbar.

Step 3. Click on the "Show / Hide" button to remove the paragraph symbol

In the "Display" tab, identify the section marked "Always show these formatting marks on the screen". You should see a box labeled "Paragraph Marks".
