Microsoft Word has a button to enable and disable the paragraph symbol represented by the ¶ sign. This button belongs to the category called "formatting marks". In some situations, it can be useful to activate the paragraph symbol (for example, if you need to delete a page break, but cannot exactly identify the position of that break). However, turning on and displaying the paragraph symbol as you type can be distracting. If you want to know how to disable it, use one of the methods described in the following steps.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use the Show / Hide Formatting Marks Button
Step 1. Go to the Home tab or the main toolbar, depending on the version of Word you are using
In newer versions of Word, the "Show / Hide Formatting" button is located on the "Home" tab in the "Paragraph" section of the toolbar. In earlier versions of Word the button should be on the main toolbar.
Step 2. Identify the "Show / Hide Formatting" button
The "Show / Hide Formatting" button appears as a paragraph mark (¶). In general, this sign is located in the upper right corner of the "Paragraph" section in the toolbar.
Step 3. Click on the "Show / Hide" button to remove the paragraph symbol
Once you find the ¶ button, all you have to do is click on this button and the paragraph symbol will be disabled. To activate it again at a later time, click the ¶ button again.
Method 2 of 2: Remove the Paragraph Mark in the Options Section
Step 1. Click on "File" and then on "Options"
Sometimes, only some formatting marks are set to appear in the document, this means that the Show / Hide Formatting Marks button may not work. Instead, click on "File" and then on "Options".
Step 2. Click on "View"
In the "Display" tab, identify the section marked "Always show these formatting marks on the screen". You should see a box labeled "Paragraph Marks".
Step 3. Uncheck the "Paragraph Marks" box
You can also turn off any other formatting marks you want to remove at this point, such as spaces, hidden text, and object anchors.
Step 4. Click "Ok" at the bottom of the window
Paragraph marks will no longer automatically appear in your documents.
