If playing Clash of Clans your goal is to repel attacks and create an impenetrable defense, you need to focus on building various defensive buildings and placing the most valuable resources in the center of the village. A well built village, with a strong perimeter and various layers of defense, will allow you to reach the highest leagues, earning more trophies and victories.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Defending at the Low Levels
Step 1. Build walls effectively
To get a good defense in this game, you have to use all the walls at your disposal and do it right. At the lower levels, you can't build very large walls, so you need to make sure your most valuable resources are inside them.
- In the beginning, besides the town hall, the three most important structures are the gold and elixir deposits.
- If defense is your first priority, the town hall is the most important building. If the attacker fails to destroy it, he will not be able to get more than one star. In addition, these buildings are the ones that have the most life points, except for the walls.
- Build walls around the town hall and other defenses to protect them.
- If there are openings in the walls, the enemy troops will use those gaps to overcome them.
- Do not place all the defenses and resources within the walls, but rather try to build several layers of walls around the most important buildings.
Step 2. Use other structures as a defense
Archers, sorcerers, wild boar tamers and flying creatures are capable of firing over walls, or flying past them. Use less important buildings to create a buffer for these attacks, slowing the enemy's progress.
- Use cannons, archer towers and mortars as a cushion. If you have the chance, place these units inside the walls. If you don't have enough walls, use these defensive buildings to complete the outermost layer of defense.
- Archer guns and towers should be your first line of defense, as they are capable of firing quickly and attracting attacking units.
- Place mortars and air defenses in the center of the base. These units inflict area damage, that is, they attack an area where enemy troops are present and not individual units.
Step 3. Join a clan
Build the clan castle and join a group of players to upgrade your defenses. This building is extremely useful for the defense of the village, as it allows you to ask your companions which troops they will fight in case of an assault.
- If defense is your priority, build the clan castle near the town hall. This allows allied troops to start the battle close to action and consequently, better defend your most important assets.
- When you level up, always try to make upgrading the clan castle a priority.
Step 4. Place the defenses so that they protect each other
Think of the various buildings as a chain. Enemies such as archers, sorcerers and barbarians do not have a preferred target and attack the closest structure. As a result, it creates a chain of defense so that the attackers are always at gunpoint.
- These troops will attack the walls, archer towers and cannons that are outside the village. Place the cannons in the area defended by the towers, so that they can attack the invaders together.
- Place the mortars closest to the center of the village, but still in the area defended by the archer's towers and cannons. These defense units can deal area damage to enemy troops that are busy attacking the outer walls and buildings.
Step 5. Leave the less important buildings outside the walls
Don't waste resources on defending troop camps, barracks, lab, spell factory, and even gold and elixir mines. At the lower levels, you won't have enough walls to surround all structures; therefore, do not try to defend buildings of lesser strategic importance.
- While the gold and elixir mines contain some resources, these buildings are usually not worth worrying about, especially if you play often and collect the materials they produce frequently.
- Use the exterior buildings as an extra layer of defense. Enemies such as archers, sorcerers and barbarians attack the closest target. Place a cannon or mortar to defend those structures, so you can start attacking the invaders right away before they start breaking through the walls.
Step 6. Protect the gold and elixir deposits
Like the town hall, these buildings contain large amounts of resources. Place them near the town hall itself and your mortars.
To further enhance your defenses, place bombs near the depots to damage troops trying to attack them
Method 2 of 3: Defending at the Medium Levels
Step 1. Upgrade all buildings before leveling up the Town Hall
Once you reach medium levels, when you can build a level 4-7 town hall, you should take care of upgrading the defenses before leveling up the city center. If defense is your priority, focus your resources on the clan castle, towers, walls, warehouses and mines, before the army.
- First, focus on upgrading the walls. These are the most expensive structures to upgrade, but offer the best defense against ground troops. However, don't level them up, or you won't have any resources left to upgrade the other buildings.
- Upgrade your mortars and air defenses. Once your town hall is at a high enough level, you will be attacked by flying creatures, such as dragons. Additionally, your enemies will send flying healers capable of helping invaders on the battlefield. By upgrading your air defenses and those that inflict area damage, you'll be able to stop these new troops from breaking through the walls as well.
- Next, upgrade the Archer Towers and the Warlock Towers. The Sorcerer's Towers attack in a rather small area, but they are powerful and not easy to destroy at higher levels. Square near the town hall, deposits and mortars, in order to develop a powerful back line of defense.
Step 2. Make room for the more advanced defensive buildings
By leveling up the Town Hall, you will unlock more versatile and powerful defensive buildings. Air Defenses, Hidden Teslas, and the X-Bow are structures that can make defending your village much more effective. Make sure you change the composition of the base when you have the opportunity to purchase these elements.
- Air defense towers are available starting at level four and only attack air units, such as dragons and healers. Place them near the center of the base, so as to repel the flying invaders. Be sure to protect them with walls and other defensive structures.
- Hidden Teslas become available at Town Hall level 7. These structures attack very quickly and are effective against light units, such as archers and barbarians. Furthermore, they are hidden which means that your enemy will not be able to see them at the time of the attack. Place them around the perimeter of the base, in order to take out the Wall Breakers and Archers before these units are able to deal a lot of damage and open the way for the others.
Step 3. If necessary, redesign your village
After taking the Town Hall to the higher levels, you will have new buildings available and you will be able to build more units than the existing structures. Plus, you'll have access to a lot more walls.
- As soon as you get the chance, take advantage of the ability to build more walls. There are several strategies on building the base when you have multiple levels and resources at your disposal. The standard version involves placing defensive units and depots within a single large wall. However, this approach leaves the village vulnerable once the wall breakers, giants and goblins have broken through.
- The so-called pocket structure involves surrounding each single defensive structure with a small wall. At medium levels, you should try to defend the town hall, the clan castle, the gold and elixir deposits, as well as some defenses. Consider creating larger fenced areas where you can place more buildings. This way you will create different layers of defense, without sacrificing the protection of the most important assets.
- Remember, as a general rule, to place buildings capable of dealing area damage, such as mortars and wizard towers in the center of the village, while archer towers and cannons will act as the first line of defense.
Method 3 of 3: Defend at Higher Levels
Step 1. Build as many defensive buildings as possible
Once your town hall has reached level 8, you will have plenty of defensive structures at your disposal. Spend your resources on upgrading current defenses, especially the clan castle, but save enough to be able to build some new buildings as well.
- Don't forget to upgrade the walls, which remain the strongest line of defense.
- You should also devote yourself to the production of dark elixir. This resource is difficult to obtain in battle and almost as difficult to obtain. By building and upgrading the Dark Elixir Drills you will be able to produce enough of it to create the Barbarian King. You can use the king to defend your village and attack enemy troops. This unit is particularly effective for defending your gold and elixir deposits.
- Build at least one more tower of each type once you reach level 8. Make sure the clan town hall and castle are in the center of the village, surrounded by the strongest walls. Place the new towers in a square or circle, as close as possible to the town hall, with the exception of the archer's tower, which should be located along the perimeter of the outermost wall.
- Build air defense and occult tesla relatively close.
- Build the shuttlecock as it becomes available to knock back flying enemies. Place it away from other anti-air defenses, otherwise when activated, it will push enemies out of range of damage-dealing structures. Instead, try to direct the invaders towards the fire of your towers.
Step 2. Upgrade the new towers
Once you've taken care of the existing defensive structures, upgrade the new towers you just added to better counter enemy attacks.
- Upgrade the towers one at a time, until the next stage takes no more than a day to build.
- Prioritize upgrades that don't keep your builders busy for too many days. For example, if you tried to upgrade your air defenses at the same time, you'd block builders for several days and wouldn't have a chance to focus on the other buildings before being attacked a few times.
- Use the same strategy for the wizard's mortars and towers. Also, if you upgrade too many defensive structures at the same time, you will be more vulnerable to attack.
- Once you've completed the most important projects, move on to upgrading traps, such as bombs, balloons, and skeletons.
Step 3. Build the Archer Queen's Altar
Once you have upgraded your town hall to level 9, you can create this powerful unit, similar to the barbarian king, who will defend your village.
You can place the archer queen next to the barbarian king and have them fight together, or separate them, so they can defend a larger area
Step 4. Continue to upgrade existing defenses and build new ones
Once you reach level 9 of the town hall, you will have access to the X-arch and other walls. Dedicate one builder to the walls and the other to the arch.
Add the defensive buildings you have unlocked. If you have upgraded your current defenses in the correct order, you should be able to dedicate yourself to building new structures without weakening the village
Step 5. Add more gold and elixir deposits
To contain the resources needed to upgrade the new defenses, you may need larger warehouses. Before you spend your resources looking after the new defensive buildings, think about storages.
- As you build upgrades, you will need more and more gold, elixir, and dark elixir.
- Place the largest deposits in the center of the village to protect your resources.
Step 6. Redesign the base as needed and keep upgrading the heroes and walls
As you slowly build all the new defenses and upgrade them, you need to make sure the Barbarian King and Archer Queen are powerful enough to defend the village while rebuilding.
You also need to create enough space for the new buildings, following the previous strategy. Remember to place the mortars, hidden tesla and sorcerer towers in the center of the village, while the archer towers, traps and cannons must be closer to the perimeter
Advice
- Save gems to unlock new builders. Having the ability to use three or four builders from the early stages of the game allows you to greatly reduce the creation time of the village.
- Focus on building several defensive buildings that are able to work together to create a complete defense. You shouldn't build three archer towers and just one mortar.
- Upgrade existing structures, but don't ignore new ones. Low-level building upgrades cost fewer resources and take less time. This allows you to get the best defense as quickly as possible and to optimize the work of the builders.
- Don't neglect your army, lab and research. Even if your priority is defense, you still need to be able to attack and win battles. Thanks to the clashes with other players you will have the opportunity to observe their villages and study their defensive strategy. Additionally, you must participate in clan wars if you wish to continue benefiting from its resources.
- Attacking other players is the best way to get resources.
