This article explains how to purchase and download an Xbox 360 video game. If your chosen game is backwards compatible, it can also be played on Xbox One. You can perform these steps using an Xbox 360, Xbox One, or the Xbox.com website.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Xbox 360
Step 1. Turn on the Xbox 360 console and controller
Press and hold the "Guide" button on the controller (the one with the Xbox logo) located at the top center of the gamepad.
Step 2. Make sure you are logged in using the correct user profile
Press the "Help" button and see the profile icon displayed at the top of the screen. If the image shown is correct, press the "Help" button again to close the appeared menu.
If you are logged in with the wrong profile, press the button X, select the option Yup and press the button TO, then press the key X and select the profile to use.
Step 3. Go to the Games tab
Press the bumper twice RB of the controller to open the indicated card.
Step 4. Select the Search for games option and press the button A of the controller.
It is located at the bottom of the screen. A search bar will appear.
Step 5. Enter the title of the video game to be purchased
To type the name, use the letters displayed at the top of the screen.
Step 6. Select the name of the video game you have chosen and press the A button
Scroll down with the controller to be able to select the name of the game in question that appeared under the field in which you entered the search criteria. Press the button TO after selecting the correct name to search the Xbox 360 store.
Step 7. Select the video game to download and press the A button on the controller
The store page dedicated to the chosen title will be displayed.
Step 8. Choose the Buy item and press the button TO.
The screen will appear showing the details of the credit card associated with your profile.
Step 9. Select the Confirm Purchase option and press the button TO.
The purchase will be finalized and the download of the game to the console will start automatically.
- If you have a code to download the video game in question, choose the item Change payment options, press the button TO, select the option Redeem code, press the button again TO, then enter the code.
- If you have not configured any payment methods, you will need to add a credit card or PayPal account before you can make a purchase in the store.
Step 10. Check the download progress
Press the "Guide" button, press the backbone "LB", select the option Active downloads and press the button TO of the controller. The complete list of all currently queued downloads will be displayed. The video game just purchased should also be present in the list that appeared.
To temporarily suspend the download, you can turn off the Xbox 360 at any time. As soon as you restart the console, the download will automatically resume from the point at which it was interrupted (remember that you will need to log in to the console with the same account with which you purchased the game)
Method 2 of 3: Xbox One
Step 1. Turn on the Xbox One console and controller
Press and hold the "Xbox" button on the controller (the one with the Xbox logo) located at the top center of the gamepad connected to the console.
Step 2. Make sure you are logged in using the correct user profile
Press the "Xbox" button and note the profile name displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. It should be the name of the account you want to use to purchase the game of your interest.
If you are connected to the console with the wrong profile, select the icon of the latter, press the key TO, choose the correct account and press the button again TO.
Step 3. Go to the Store tab
Press the shoulder button four times RB of the controller.
Step 4. Select the Search option and press the button TO.
It features a magnifying glass icon and is located in the center of the screen.
Step 5. Enter the name of the game to search for
Type it using the virtual keyboard that appears on the screen.
Step 6. Press the "Menu" button ☰ on the controller
It is located to the right of the "Xbox" button.
Step 7. Select the game you want to download and press the A button
The store page dedicated to the chosen video game will be displayed.
If the game you are interested in is not shown in the list, it means that it is not compatible with the Xbox One console
Step 8. Choose the Show Price option and press the button A of the controller.
It is located in the center of the page dedicated to the video game in question. The screen to complete the payment will be displayed.
Step 9. Choose the Continue item and press the button TO.
The window for purchasing will be displayed.
Step 10. Select the Confirm item and press the button TO.
The purchase of the chosen title will be finalized and the download on the Xbox One will start automatically.
- If you have not configured any payment method, you will need to add a credit card or PayPal account before you can make a purchase in the store.
- Remember that it is not possible to redeem an Xbox 360 code using an Xbox One.
Step 11. Check the download progress
Check the status bar displayed at the top right of the Home tab for the remaining time for the download to complete.
Turning off the console will pause the download temporarily. As soon as the Xbox One is restarted the download will resume automatically
Method 3 of 3: Xbox website
Step 1. Go to the online store for Xbox 360 games
Within the web page that appears you will find the complete list of all the Xbox 360 video games available in the digital version.
If you have an Xbox 360 code to redeem, you won't be able to do it from the platform's website, but you will have to do it directly from the console
Step 2. Select the game to download
Click the icon of the video game of your interest displayed on the main page of the store. Alternatively, type the game title into the search bar in the upper right corner of the page and press the Enter key. At this point, click on the name of the game that appeared in the results list.
If your chosen video game is also available for Xbox One, be sure to click on the icon dedicated to the Xbox 360 version (characterized by a green and white band at the top and the words "Xbox 360")
Step 3. Click on Buy Game
It is characterized by a green bar and is placed on the left side of the page under the information relating to the classification of the title. A new pop-up window will appear.
- At this point you may be prompted to sign in with your Xbox Live account. If so, provide your email address and security password.
- If you are already logged in and are asked to verify your account, follow these instructions: click the option Email, enter the secondary e-mail address linked to the account in use and click the item Send code. Access the mailbox of the address you provided, read the e-mail you received from Microsoft, locate the number next to "Security code", type it in the text field visible inside the verification page and click on the button Verify.
Step 4. Click the Confirm button
It is green in color and is located at the bottom of the window. The chosen video game will be purchased and placed in the Xbox 360 "Download Queue".
If you have no valid payment method associated with your Xbox Live account, you will need to add a credit or debit card now
Step 5. Turn on the Xbox 360
Press the "Power" button located along the front of the console or press and hold the "Guide" button on the controller (characterized by the Xbox logo).
Step 6. Make sure you are logged in using the correct user profile
Press the "Help" button and see the profile icon displayed at the top of the screen. This should be the profile picture you used to purchase the game from the Xbox 360 store.
If you are logged in with the wrong profile, press the button X, select the option Yup and press the button TO, then press the key X and select the profile to use.
Step 7. Check the download progress
Press the "Guide" button, press the backbone "LB", select the option Active downloads and press the button TO Controller: A complete list of all currently queued downloads will be displayed. The video game just purchased should also be present in the list that appeared.

Advice
If you have an Xbox 360 game that you want to play on Xbox One, you can check its compatibility by inserting the DVD into the Xbox One player. If the game in question is compatible, it will be downloaded automatically from the store
Warnings
- Remember that not all Xbox 360 games are also compatible with Xbox One.
- If a video game was released on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, you won't be able to install the Xbox 360 version on Xbox One.
