This article explains how to upgrade Minecraft to a new version. Normally Minecraft should automatically update no matter what platform it is installed on, however sometimes it may need to be updated manually due to unexpected problems. Remember that, in order to update, the device on which the game is installed must be connected to the internet in order to download all the necessary files.
Steps
Method 1 of 6: Computer
Step 1. Launch the Minecraft launcher
Double-click on the Minecraft app icon, which features a grass and dirt block similar to those found within the game.
If you're using the Windows 10 version of Minecraft, you can't update manually
Step 2. Log in if necessary
If prompted, provide your account email address and password, then click the button Log in.
Step 3. Look for "Download" or "Download" inside the Play button
If you see the word "Download" or "Download" followed by a version number under the heading Plays of the green launcher button, it means that a new Minecraft update is available.
If the word "Download" or "Download" is missing, but you know for sure that a new version of the game has been released, skip the next two steps in this section
Step 4. Click the Play button
It is green in color and is located at the bottom of the launcher. This will start the download of the update.
Step 5. Wait for the download of the new version of Minecraft to complete
When the green progress bar displayed at the bottom of the launcher window disappears, you will be able to use Minecraft normally.
Step 6. If necessary, re-download Minecraft
If you are unable to update Minecraft despite the fact that a new version of the game is available in the region where you reside, you can try to solve the problem by downloading the installation file of the latest version of the game. First uninstall the current version of Minecraft, then follow these instructions:
- Visit the site https://minecraft.net/it-it/profile/ and log in if necessary;
- Click on the button DOWNLOAD located in the upper left of the page;
- Click on the green button DOWNLOAD displayed in the center of the page.
Step 7. Update the Minecraft version for Windows 10
If you have a computer running Windows 10 on which you have installed the Java version of Minecraft, you can upgrade for free by following these instructions:
- Visit the website https://account.mojang.com/me and log in with your Minecraft account if prompted;
- Click on the item Redeem placed in the "Minecraft for Windows 10" section;
- Sign in with your Microsoft account if prompted;
- Click on the button Next displayed on the "Redeem" page;
- Click on the button Confirm;

Access the Microsoft Store directly from the menu Start
Of computer;
- Search using the keyword "Minecraft", then click the button Install placed within the store page dedicated to Minecraft.
Method 2 of 6: iPhone
Step 1. Launch the App Store application
iPhone.
Tap the corresponding icon with the white letter "A" on a light blue background.
Step 2. Select the Updates tab
It is located at the bottom right of the screen. You will see the complete list of all available updates for the apps installed on your device.
Step 3. Search for the Minecraft app
Scroll down the list (if necessary) to locate the "Minecraft" application icon.
If the Minecraft app is not on the list, it means that there is no new program update available. If you know that a new version of Minecraft is available, but it is not present in the "Updates" tab of the App Store, it means that it is most likely not compatible with your iPhone or that it has not yet been released in the region where you live
Step 4. Press the Update button
It's located on the right of the Minecraft app. This way the program update will be downloaded and installed on your device.
Step 5. Wait for the download of the new update to complete
At the end of the installation press the button You open, which will appear next to the Minecraft app. At this point you are ready to resume playing with the new version of Minecraft.
Method 3 of 6: Android devices
Step 1. Go to the Play Store
of your Android device.
Tap the Play Store icon, characterized by a multicolored triangle on a white background.
Step 2. Press the ☰ button
It is located in the upper left of the screen. The Play Store main menu will appear on the left side of the screen.
Step 3. Select the My apps and games option
It is displayed at the top of the appeared menu.
Step 4. Go to the Updates tab
It is displayed in the upper left of the "My apps and games" screen.
Step 5. Search for the Minecraft app
Scroll down the list (if necessary) to locate the "Minecraft" application icon.
If the Minecraft app is not on the list, it means that there is no new program update available. If you know that a new version of Minecraft is available, but it is not present in the "Updates" tab of the App Store, it means that it is most likely not compatible with your Android device or that it has not yet been released in the area geographic location where you live
Step 6. Press the Update button
It should be located on the right of the Minecraft app. This way the program update will be downloaded and installed on your device.
Step 7. Wait for the download of the new update to complete
Once the installation is complete, press the button You open which will appear next to the Minecraft app. At this point you are ready to resume playing with the new version of Minecraft.
Method 4 of 6: Xbox One
Step 1. Go to the My apps and games section
It is located directly on the Xbox One dashboard.
Step 2. Select the Games tab
It is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Select the Minecraft app
Scroll through the list of games installed on your console until you find the Minecraft icon, then select it using your controller.
Step 4. Press the "Menu" button ☰ on the controller
It is located to the right of the "Help" button on the Xbox One controller. A context menu will be displayed.
Step 5. Select the Manage games and add-ons option
It is one of the items listed in the menu. A new page dedicated to the Minecraft video game will appear
Step 6. Go to the Updates tab
It is displayed on the left side of the screen.
Step 7. Select the Minecraft update
If the download of the new version of the game does not start automatically, select the corresponding icon and press the button TO of the controller to start it manually.
If there is no new update, it means that your Xbox One has the latest version of Minecraft available in the region where you live
Step 8. Follow any instructions that appear on the screen
If necessary, confirm that you want to install the update and choose where to install it. After the installation of the new update is complete you should be able to play Minecraft as you normally do.
Method 5 of 6: PlayStation 4
Step 1. Select the Minecraft icon
Access your game library (or locate the Minecraft app within the PS4 dashboard), then select the Minecraft cover image.
Step 2. Press the Options button
It is oval in shape and is located in the upper right corner of the console controller. A context menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Select the Check for updates item
It is one of the options in the menu that appeared.
Step 4. Choose the Go to [Download] item when prompted
You will be redirected to the "Download" tab where you can check the status of the updates download.
If a message like "The installed application is the latest version" appears, there is no new update available for Minecraft
Step 5. Wait for the update download to finish
The time required can vary from a few minutes to several hours. When "Ready to install" appears next to the update, you can continue.
Step 6. Install the update
Select the new version of Minecraft, press the button X controller, then press it again when a drop-down menu appears. The update will be installed on the PS4.
No action should be required during the update installation phase. However, if not, follow any instructions that appear on the screen
Method 6 of 6: Nintendo Switch
Step 1. Select the Minecraft app
Go to the Home screen, then select the Minecraft program icon.
The card of the Minecraft video game must be inserted in the appropriate slot of the console to be able to run it
Step 2. Go to the "Options" tab
After selecting the Minecraft icon, press the button + or - to access the "Options" tab.
Step 3. Select the Software Update item
It is one of the items listed in the "Options" menu.
Step 4. Choose the Through internet option
It is displayed in the pop-up window that appears. This will start the download of the Minecraft update.
Step 5. Follow all the instructions that appear on the screen
If you need to authorize the installation or if you are notified that new updates are available, follow the instructions provided to complete the procedure.
