Seadra is one of the original water Pokemon among the 151 Pokemon introduced in the first generation of the game. Seadra's appearance is inspired by that of a seahorse, generally a blue body with pointed wings. Seadra evolves from the much smaller Pokemon Horsea, while its third and final form (Kingdra) was introduced later in the second generation of the game. Seadra is one of the few Pokemon that requires special conditions before they can evolve into the final form. Follow this guide to learn the steps and items you will need to evolve Seadra into Kingdra.
Steps
Step 1. Obtain a Dragon Scale
The Dragon Scale, a blue item, is a type of item that allows a Pokemon to evolve once equipped. It can only be found in specific areas of the game, which vary based on the version you are playing.
- Gold, Silver and Crystal - can be obtained in Mount Mortar; you can also get it by defeating wild Horsea, Seadra, Dratini and Dragonair.
- Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald - can be obtained by defeating wild Horsea and Bagon.
- FireRed and LeafGreen - can be obtained within the Water Trail and the Trainer Tower.
- Diamond, Pearl and Platinum - can be obtained by defeating wild Horsea and Seadra.
- HeartGold and SoulSilver - can be obtained inside Mortar Mountain; you can also get it by defeating wild Horsea, Seadra, Dratini and Dragonair.
- Black and White - can be found on Routes 13 and 18; you can also get it by defeating wild Horsea, Seadra, Kingdra, Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite.
- Black 2 and White 2 - you can find it in Via Vittoria, in the Antiques Shop of the Solidarity Gallery and inside the Wild Forest; you can also get it by defeating wild Horsea, Seadra, Kingdra, Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite.
- X and Y - can be found inside the Terminus Cave; you can also get it by defeating wild Horsea, Seadra, Kingdra, Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite.
- To find the Dragon Scale, simply walk around the areas described above. When you walk over a hidden object, the message "Your character has found a Dragon Scale" will appear and the object will be added to your backpack.
- Even if you defeat the suggested wild Pokemon you can find a Dragon Scale as an item, but the probability is not 100%.
Step 2. Equip Seadra with Dragon Scale
Open the backpack, select the scale and choose Seadra from your Pokemon team.
Step 3. Find an Exchange Center
Seadra will only evolve when traded with another player. Trading systems and their locations change according to the version of the game.
- In older versions, you can trade Pokemon with other players using the Gameboy link cable, by entering a Pokemon Center in any city and talking to the non-player trading character.
- In more recent generations (from the fourth onwards), you can trade Pokemon using the Global Trade Station (GTS). To trade using the GTS, enter a Pokemon Center in any city and talk to the non-player character assigned to the system.
Step 4. Exchange your Seadra
Ask one of your friends to trade a Pokemon with you. Choose Seadra from the team and trade him with the other player's chosen Pokemon. When Seadra is traded, she will evolve into Kingdra.
Step 5. Have your newly evolved Kingdra returned
Ask the other player to start a new trade in order to get your Pokemon back.
You can choose to skip this step if you don't want Kingdra back
Advice
- Seadra will only evolve if Dragon Scale is present in her gear during the trade. If you trade it without that item, nothing will happen.
- Seadra can only evolve with this method. Raising his level won't help.
