This article describes how to buy and download movies and TV shows directly from your iPad. The Apple TV application has replaced Video and iTunes as a store for video content. You can also use it to download movies you previously purchased on iTunes. Also, if you are a Netflix member, you will learn how to use the Download feature to download movies and series to watch offline on your iPad.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Buy and Rent with the Apple TV App
Step 1. Open the Apple TV app
The icon for this application is represented by the Apple logo and the word "TV" on a black background. If you have updated the iOS operating system to version 13 or later, you will find it in one of the main screens. If not, download it from the App Store.
It is recommended that you connect to a Wi-Fi network because you need a lot of data to download videos
Step 2. Click Watch Now
You will see this TV-shaped icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Search for a movie or TV show
There are several ways to browse the titles:
- At the top of the screen, you will see tabs with the various categories (Movies, TV Shows, Kids, etc.). Press the one you prefer to explore its contents.
- Scroll down to the "Watch Now" screen to find suggestions, other categories, channels and content highlighted by Apple.
- Press on Search for, in the lower right corner of the screen, to find a specific movie or TV show.
Step 4. Tap on a movie or TV show
That way, information about that content will appear, including episodes (if any), ratings, and often a free trailer.
If you have chosen a program with multiple seasons, click on the menu Seasons in the upper left corner, in order to browse the episodes of the desired season, then press on the episode you are interested in to show its price and viewing options.
Step 5. Click on the price to buy or rent
Depending on the movie or TV show, you may have both options available. Renting will always be cheaper, because you will be able to enjoy the video content for only 30 days. When you have decided, click on the desired option.
Step 6. Enter your Apple ID password or use Touch ID
Once your identity is confirmed, you will purchase the episode or movie of your choice and you can start watching.
If you haven't associated a payment method (such as a credit card) with your Apple ID, you'll need to enter it now before downloading the movie or series
Step 7. Click on Library when the download is complete
This will show you a list of all the content you've rented or purchased using your Apple profile, including the episode or movie you just bought.
Step 8. Press the cloud icon to download the video
This way, you will save the movie or episode on your iPad and you won't have to stream it over the internet. When finished, you can press the Play button (the triangle) to start playback.
Method 2 of 3: Download Movies and TV Shows Purchased with Apple TV
Step 1. Open the Apple TV app
The icon for this application is represented by the Apple logo and the word "TV" on a black background. If you have updated the iOS operating system to version 13 or later, you will find it in one of the main screens. If not, download it from the App Store.
It is recommended that you connect to a Wi-Fi network, as you need a lot of data to download videos
Step 2. Click on Library
You will see this TV icon at the bottom of the screen, in the center. Select it to see a list of all the content you have purchased or rented (if 30 days have not yet passed) with this Apple ID. You'll also find movies and series you've bought on the iTunes or Video apps in the past, as well as everything you've watched on your Apple TV.
Step 3. Tap on a movie or TV show
Information about that title will appear.
To stream a movie or series, press the Play button (shaped like a triangle). If you've started watching before with the same Apple ID, the video will pick up where you left off
Step 4. Press the cloud icon to download the video
This way, you'll save the movie or series on your iPad, so you don't have to stream it over the internet. Once the download is complete, you can press the Play (triangle-shaped) button to start playback.
Method 3 of 3: Use Netflix
Step 1. Open Netflix on your iPad
If you are subscribed to the streaming service, you can use the Netflix app to download some movies and TV series episodes to your iPad. Look for the black icon with a red "N" on one of the main screens. Downloaded content does not count as one of the screens that can be active at the same time.
- It is recommended that you connect to a Wi-Fi network, as you need a lot of data to download videos.
- Not all movies and TV shows can be downloaded.
Step 2. Click on a profile
Each profile associated with your account will have a different Download section.
Step 3. Search for a movie or TV show
There are several ways to find content to download:
- To view only the movies and TV shows that you can download, tap on Download at the bottom of the screen, then up FIND MORE TO DOWNLOAD. At that point, you will be able to browse the content available for download.
- If you are looking for something special, click on Search for at the bottom of the screen to enter keywords that interest you.
Step 4. Tap on a movie or TV show
Information about that content will appear. If the series you have selected has multiple seasons, tap on the menu Season under "Episodes" to view the ones that interest you.
Step 5. Press the Download icon
If you can download an episode, you'll see the Download icon (shaped like a down arrow on a horizontal line) appear next to the title. If it is a movie, the icon will appear to the right of the share button, below the summary. Press it to start downloading the content.
When the download is complete, a blue dot will appear on the Download icon at the bottom of the screen
Step 6. Click on Download at the bottom of the screen
All Netflix movies and episodes that you have downloaded to your iPad will appear here.
- Press the Play button (shaped like a triangle) when you are ready to start watching.
- You can download up to 100 titles to your iPad, but only if the tablet has enough space available.
- To delete a video you have downloaded, press Edit in the upper right corner of the screen Download, then tap on X red next to the title.
