This article explains how to locate new WhatsApp contacts using the device address book. In order to carry out this operation, the mobile number of the person in question must necessarily be present in the Contacts app of the smartphone or tablet. For this reason, it is not possible to manually add a new contact to the WhatsApp address book.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: iOS devices
Step 1. Launch the WhatsApp app
It is characterized by a green icon in the shape of a cartoon with a white telephone handset inside.
- If you do not log in automatically, follow the on-screen instructions to register your phone number.
- Remember that it is not possible to add a new contact on WhatsApp, unless it is already present in the device address book.
Step 2. Select the Chat tab
It features a cartoon icon and is located at the bottom of the screen.
If after starting WhatsApp the screen of the last conversation in which you participated is displayed directly, you will first have to press the "Back" button located in the upper left corner of the screen
Step 3. Press the "New Chat" button with the icon
It is a blue square icon with a pencil inside it and is located in the upper right corner of the screen. The WhatsApp contact list will be displayed.

Step 4. Search for the user you want to write to
Scroll through the list of contacts that appeared until you find the person you want to chat with using WhatsApp.
- You can also search by typing the corresponding name into the text field displayed at the top of the screen.
- If the person you are looking for does not yet have a WhatsApp account, you can invite them to join the user community by following these instructions: scroll to the bottom of the list, tap the option Invite a friend, select the method of sending the invitation, choose who you want to invite and press the button end located at the bottom of the screen.
Step 5. Select a contact
Tap the name of the person you want to chat with or want to call or video call. The chat screen will appear allowing you to start the conversation.
- Remember that in the WhatsApp address book there are only people who are already registered in the Contacts app of the device.
- If you know the mobile number of the person you want to chat with, you can add it to your WhatsApp contacts by following these instructions.
Part 2 of 2: Android devices
Step 1. Launch the WhatsApp app

It is displayed at the top of the screen. A list of all chats you have participated in will be displayed starting with the most recent.
If after starting WhatsApp the screen of the last conversation in which you participated is displayed directly, you will first have to press the "Back" button located in the upper left corner of the screen
Step 3. Press the "New Chat" button
It features a green circular speech bubble icon in the lower right corner of the screen. The WhtasApp contact address book will be displayed.
