If you've lost your beloved iPod, you may still be able to find it again. If you have activated the "Find my iPod" function, you will be able to find it via the GPS signal. In this scenario, you can block access to the device or format it remotely if you think someone has stolen it. If you haven't turned on Find My iPod, you'll need to backtrack your last steps to try to find where you may have left your iPod.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Using the "Find My iPod" Feature
Step 1. Understand when you can use this method
You can rely on Apple's location service, the "Find My iPod" feature, only if you have a third generation iPod or later. In addition, the device must have iOS 5 or a later version installed. Find My iPod is not supported on iPod Shuffle, Nano, or Classic.
- The "Find My iPod" feature must be activated before it can be used. From iOS version 8 onwards it is activated by default.
- To manually activate the "Find My iPod" function, start the Settings app, tap "iCloud", log in with your Apple ID, then select the "Find My iPod" option. In order to locate a lost iOS device, the "Find my [device_name]" feature must have been activated beforehand.
- There are other applications that can track a lost iPod, but even then the program must have been installed on the device before it was lost.
Step 2. Launch the Find My iPhone app on your computer or other iOS device
You can track the location of your iPod using the Find My iPhone web service or another iOS device app.
- Visit the icloud.com/#find website using any computer to access the "Find My iPhone" service.
- Download and install the "Find My iPhone" app on your own or a friend's iOS device. In this second case you will need to log in with your Apple ID as a guest. You can download the app in question on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Step 3. Sign in with your Apple ID
Regardless of whether you have chosen to use the web service or the application, you will need to log in with your Apple ID as a first step. Make sure you are using the same Apple account that the iPod is synced with.
Step 4. Wait for the iPod to be detected
Your iPod Touch will appear on the map based on the location indicated by its Wi-Fi connection. If the iPod is not connected to any wireless network or is turned off, you will not be able to trace its location, but you will still be able to block it.
Step 5. Select the iPod
Click on the "My Devices" menu, then select the iPod to locate from the list that will appear. If your device is connected to a network, the map will automatically center on its current location. If the iPod is turned off, its last known location will be displayed on the map.
Step 6. Play iPod beep
Click on the "Play Sound" option to make the iPod play a beep. This feature is active even if the device is muted. This will make it easier to locate it if you have lost it in your home, office, or in an enclosed space.
Step 7. Activate "Lost Mode"
If you have lost your iPod and are unable to find it, you can activate "Lost Mode". This way the device will be locked with a passcode and you can have a personalized message displayed on the screen. IOS 6 or later must be installed on the device in order to activate "Lost Mode".
The "Lost Mode" can be activated even if the iPod is turned off. In this case, as soon as it is accessed and connected to a Wi-Fi network, it will be automatically blocked
Step 8. Format the iPod if you think you have lost it forever or that it has been stolen
If you are not sure if you can get your device back, you can remotely format it by choosing the "Erase iPod" option. This will delete all data on the iPod and the device will be locked.
Also in this case the "Initialize iPod" function can be activated even if the device is turned off or offline. As soon as it is accessed and connected to a Wi-Fi network it will be initialized and blocked automatically
Part 2 of 2: Without Using the "Find My iPod" Feature
Step 1. Change your Apple ID password
If you have lost your iPod Touch or you think it has been stolen and you have not activated the "Find My iPod" feature beforehand, it is recommended that you change your Apple ID password immediately. This will protect access to your iCloud account and the Apple Pay service.
You can change your Apple ID password by visiting this website appleid.apple.com/
Step 2. Change any other passwords you think are important
In addition to changing your Apple ID password, you should also change the passwords for any services you accessed via your iPod. For example, the passwords of Facebook, Twitter, home banking, e-mail or any other web service that you accessed from the iPod.
Step 3. Retrace your last steps
If you have not activated the "Find My iPod" feature, you will not be able to trace the location of the device. To be able to find it you will have to rely on the traditional method.
Think about the last place you were in while you were using it and retrace the steps you took from that position. Check in all places where you may have fallen or slipped, such as between sofa cushions or car seats
Step 4. Report iPod stolen
If you are certain that your iPod has been stolen, contact law enforcement to file a report. You will most likely need to provide the serial number which is printed on the device box or which you can find by visiting the following site supportprofile.apple.com if you have registered the iPod to your Apple ID.
