When you play Minecraft, the tools you create can mean the difference between life and death. Without tools, it is virtually impossible to exploit mines, build houses, and even kill mobs. Tools are essential to survive if for example you end up in a cave without tools because by then the game will be pretty much over. This tutorial will show you how to make some of the many craftable tools in Minecraft. Go to the Steps section to get started.
Steps
Step 1. Make the sticks
The essential ingredient for making other tools are sticks. To create a stick you will need to collect wood from the trees. Next you will need to use the crafting grid (in the inventory) to create the wooden planks. Thanks to the wooden planks you can make sticks.
Step 2. Make an ax
The ax can be used to cut trees faster instead of using your hands. To craft an ax you will need two sticks and three pieces of material (wooden planks, crushed stone, iron ingots, gold or diamonds).
Step 3. Make a pickaxe
The pickaxe is used in mines and for gathering material to craft tools, construct buildings, etc. To make a pickaxe you will need two sticks and three pieces of material (wooden planks, crushed stone, iron ingots, gold or diamonds). To create the sticks see step 1.
Step 4. Create a shovel
The shovel can be used to collect dirt, grass, sand, etc. faster. To make a shovel you will need two sticks and a piece of material (wood, crushed stone, iron ingots, gold or diamonds). To make the sticks, see step 1.
Step 5. Make a hoe
The hoe is used to turn grass into arable land for planting seeds. To make a hoe you will need two sticks and two pieces of material (wooden planks, crushed stone, iron ingots, gold or diamonds). To make the sticks, see step 1.
Step 6. Make a sword
Swords are used to kill mobs and clear some obstacles. To make a sword you will need a staff and two pieces of material (wooden planks, crushed stone, iron ingots, gold or diamonds). To make the sticks, see step 1.
Step 7. Create an arc
Bows can be used to attack mobs with arrows. To create a bow you will need three sticks and three pieces of string. To make sticks, see step 1. Cords can be made from spiders and their webs.
Step 8. Create the arrows
Arrows are used as bow ammunition. To make a set of four arrows you will need flint, a stick and a feather. Flint can be found in mines, to make sticks see step 1 and sometimes chickens drop some feathers when killed. To create the arrows, place the flint in the top center square, the stick directly below, and the feather goes to the bottom center square.
Step 9. Make the flint and flint
Flint and steel can be used to start fires and can help find the Nether later in the game. To make the flint and flint, you will need an iron ingot and flint. You will find both in the mines. The iron ingots are in the iron blocks and the flint is in the gravel.
Step 10. Create a bucket
The buckets can be used to carry lava, milk and water. To make a bucket you will need three iron ingots. You will need to collect the iron blocks in the mines to get the ingots.
Step 11. Create a compass
Compasses can be used to direct the player to the spawn point. To make a compass you will need four iron ingots and red stone dust. They are both found in mines.
Step 12. Create a clock
Clocks are used to indicate the time of day. Four gold bars and redstone dust are required to create a watch.
Step 13. Make a fishing rod
You can use fishing rods to catch fish. To make a fishing rod you will need three sticks and two strings. For sticks see step 1 while you can make strings from spiders or monsters.
Step 14. Make a pair of shears
Shears can be used to harvest wool, leaves and lianas. To make the shears you will need two iron ingots. You will get the iron ingots by working the iron blocks found in the mines.
Step 15. Create a map
Maps can be used to discover areas you've never been to and areas you've been to before. To create a map you will need to surround an eight-piece compass.
Method 1 of 1: Create a fabrication grid
Step 1. Collect wood
The instructions given above assume that you already have a fabrication grid (also called a "work table"). If you don't have one, you'll need to create it before proceeding. All you will need are four wooden planks of any type. Get a block or two of wood from the trees in the landscape. It won't take you long.
Step 2. Log into your inventory
Once you've accumulated a couple of wooden blocks, access your inventory (press E). If you are just starting to play you should get the "In the inventory" trophy.
Step 3. Convert a block of wood into wooden planks
On the inventory screen, drag a block of wood to the 2x2 grid in the upper right pane. Place the wood anywhere on the grid. The raw wood should be converted to wooden planks, which will appear in the box to the right of the 2x2 grid. Drag them back into your inventory. If you wish, you can do the same for all the raw wood you own.
Step 4. Place four wooden planks in the crafting grid
When you have four wooden planks, place each of them in each square of the crafting grid. A work table should appear in the space to the right of the grid. Drag it to inventory. Your work table is complete!
Step 5. Place the work table in the world and start creating
Now that you have a work table, you can start making tools that will help you gather resources and craft other items. From four simple wooden planks, you will eventually be able to create amazing quality tools that will allow you to explore and conquer the world around you!

- All tools (picks, swords, hoes, axes and shovels) can be created with other materials such as wood, iron, gold and diamonds. All of these materials can vary the duration and strength of the instrument, from wood which is the weakest and the one with the shortest duration, to diamonds which are the strongest and most durable of all. The only exception is for gold: its strength is inferior only to diamonds but the durability is more inferior than wood.
