Hair can fall out for a variety of reasons, including certain conditions (such as alopecia), medical treatments, or advancing age. The phenomenon involving loss and thinning occurs more frequently in women who have reached menopause and is not without trauma. Thankfully, with some home remedies and medical treatments it is possible to promote hair regrowth and even get it to your preferred length.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Promote Hair Regrowth with Home Remedies
Step 1. Take care of your hair
In some cases, poor hair care can lead to hair loss or hinder regrowth. However, by adopting useful and healthy habits, you can incentivize them to grow.
Step 2. Wash your hair regularly and avoid stressing it
Wash them regularly and gently from root to tip, using shampoo and conditioner. This will not only promote their growth, but will prevent damage that can cause further crown thinning.
- In order not to damage them, wash them every other day or as little as possible.
- Rub the shampoo into the scalp and over the entire length of the strands.
- Rinse them by running water from the scalp to the ends. Do not rub them, otherwise you could wear them out or cause them to fall.
Step 3. Apply conditioner
When you are done washing and rinsing them, apply the conditioner to the entire length of the hair, from the ends to the roots. This way, you will avoid losing entire strands of weakened or broken hair.
Make sure you use conditioner every time you wash your head
Step 4. Dry them carefully
Towels and blow dryers can damage and thin out your hair, so treat your hair well to encourage it to grow and prevent it from breaking.
- Once washed, rub them gently or pat them dry with a towel. Avoid wrapping them into a turban, otherwise you could damage and break them.
- If you can, let them air dry.
- If you use a hairdryer, select the lowest temperature. Even decreasing its use can stimulate hair growth.
Step 5. Avoid brushing and combing them continuously or with too much energy
Try to use the brush and comb less often and as gently as possible. Doing so will encourage their growth and can prevent further damage.
- Brush them only when you need to fix them. It is not necessary to brush a hundred strokes a day.
- Once washed, let them air dry before brushing or combing them.
- Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle them when they are wet. It will cause less damage than the brush.
- If any knots have formed, gently remove them and, if necessary, apply conditioner.
Step 6. Do the crease intelligently
Many people style their hair using special tools that often reach temperatures higher than the blow dryer, such as the curling iron. If you need to do a hairstyle, choose one that allows you to leave it loose, avoid harsh products and use tools at low temperatures.
- Be careful when pulling them back to make a ponytail or a tight bun - not only do you risk them breaking and ruining, but you may also encourage further hair thinning. Gather them back without pulling them excessively and try a different hairstyle every day to allow your hair and scalp to rest.
- Use fabric elastics when you want to tie them. Rubber can tear or break them.
- Avoid styling products that guarantee a "long-lasting hold". They can damage and weaken them.
- If you use styling tools, such as a curling iron, flat iron or heat curler, select the lowest temperature.
- If you wear extensions or a hair implant applied with the weaving technique, make sure that they do not weigh and do not pull your hair from the roots.
Step 7. Avoid chemicals
If you subject your hair to dyes, perms, or chemical straighteners, allow more time between treatments or, if you can, avoid it altogether. Not only will you stimulate their growth, but you can also prevent them from weakening and cracking.
- Wait 8-10 weeks between retouching.
- Do one treatment at a time, otherwise wait at least a couple of weeks between each one.
Step 8. Protect your hair from the sun
If you go out frequently, use sunscreen lotion or a nice wide hat. Not only will you protect your hair and scalp from the sun's harmful rays, but you can also promote their growth and prevent breakage.
- Any wide-brimmed hat will do.
- To protect them from root to tip, you can use a hair sunscreen or leave-in conditioner containing zinc oxide.
Step 9. Stimulate growth with a scalp massage
The friction of the scalp stimulates and increases the blood supply. Try seeing a professional, or massage your head yourself to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth.
- Some massage therapists specialize in techniques that increase blood circulation to the scalp.
- The increased blood flow promotes greater absorption of nutrients, which in turn stimulate hair growth.
- Massage can help moisturize the scalp and strengthen the roots.
Step 10. Use lavender oil
According to some studies, lavender oil can fight hair loss. Massage a small amount between the strands and on the roots to encourage their growth and decrease thinning.
- You can buy it in health food stores and some grocery stores.
- Rub a small amount into your scalp once a day.
- You can mix it with other essential oils, such as thyme, rosemary, and cedarwood.
Step 11. Increase your nutrient consumption
Hair is a clue to our general health. To keep your hair in shape, try taking vitamins and minerals. By increasing your intake of certain nutrients, you will help your hair grow and stay strong.
- Proteins are building blocks of hair. By eating meat, dairy, fish, eggs, and nuts, you will help keep them healthy and strong.
- Iron helps prevent hair loss. You can increase your intake by consuming red meat, offal, fish and chicken, but also lentils, cabbage and broccoli if you are a vegetarian.
- Vitamin C allows the body to assimilate iron and produce the collagen necessary to fortify the hair fibers. Try eating blueberries, broccoli, oranges, and strawberries to get enough vitamin C.
- The omega-3 fatty acids help keep the scalp sprayed with sebum, favoring the hydration of the strands. Get them by eating fish, including salmon and trout, and by introducing other food sources, such as avocado and pumpkin seeds, into your diet.
- A lack of zinc and / or selenium can lead to hair thinning. Consume fortified whole grains, oysters, beef, and eggs to get the zinc needed to prevent hair loss.
- Biotin helps keep locks strong and silky. A deficiency can make hair brittle or cause it to fall out. You can get it by consuming whole grains, liver, eggs, and yeast.
Step 12. Put on a wig
If the idea of not having thick hair makes you embarrassed, try wearing fake hair as it grows back. It may make you feel more comfortable in public or in the company of friends and family.
You can also use it if your hair does not respond to any treatment
Method 2 of 2: Get Medical Treatment
Step 1. See your doctor
If the problem is severe, you should see your doctor to pinpoint the cause. You probably have a condition that involves hair loss and therefore need treatment to make it grow back.
Your doctor may order blood tests to see if hormonal changes are causing the problem
Step 2. Rub the minoxidil into the scalp
Minoxidil is a drug sold in the form of a solution or foam to be massaged on the head 2 times a day. Helps promote hair growth and decrease hair loss.
- Both men and women can use it and you don't need a prescription to buy it.
- Regrowth will be evident starting from the 16th week. For it to be effective, you need to keep applying it.
- Some side effects may occur, such as scalp irritation, rapid heartbeat, and hair growth on the face and hands.
- You can buy minoxidil at the pharmacy.
Step 3. Undergo surgery to thicken or transplant your hair
If medications and treatments don't work, get a hair transplant or thickening surgery. It will allow you to cover the thinnest areas and stimulate hair regrowth.
- The techniques of transplantation and thickening are surgical procedures that consist in taking small strands from different parts of the head and implanting them in the areas affected by baldness or more thinned out.
- You will likely need to undergo drug therapy before surgery.
- The transplant can be very painful and cause infections and scarring.
- Keep in mind that transplant and thickening surgical procedures are expensive and health insurance may not cover this expense.
Step 4. Undergo laser therapy
According to some studies, the so-called Low Level Laser Therapy (low level laser light) can fight the progress of baldness and improve the texture of the hair. Although more research is needed, this treatment can be an excellent alternative if medications are not effective and the patient does not intend to undergo a painful hair transplant.
