This article explains how to make and use enchanted books to upgrade your gear in Minecraft.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Create an Enchanted Book
Step 1. Gather the necessary resources
To craft an enchanted book, you need the following items:
- Work station: four wooden planks, which you can get from a block of wood.
- Book: three units of paper, which you can make with three units of sugar cane and a piece of leather.
- Spell table: two diamonds, four obsidian blocks and a book.
Step 2. Open the inventory
Inside you should see the items you need.

Step 3. Build a workbench
To do this, you need four wooden planks, which you can obtain by placing a block of wood in the crafting grid inside the inventory.
- In the PC version of Minecraft, you have to drag the four wooden planks into the two-by-two crafting grid located at the top of the inventory.
- In Minecraft PE, press the tab above the inventory on the left side of the screen, then press the workbench icon, which looks like a box with lines.
- On console, press the "Create" key (X or circle), then select the workbench.
Step 4. Place the workbench on the ground
To do this, you need to select it in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
If your equipment bar is full, you need to open your inventory and replace an item with the workbench
Step 5. Open the workbench
A 3x3 grid will open, along with your inventory (PE and PC versions only).
Step 6. Create a book
To do this, place three sugar cane units in the middle row of the workbench, take the paper you got and arrange it in an L shape in the upper left corner of the grid. Add the leather to the top center box, forming a square along with the "L".
- In Minecraft PE, just press the book icon on the left side of the screen, then press the button 1 x [book] On the right side.
- In the console version of Minecraft, select the book icon from the paper section of the "Decorations" tab.
Step 7. Build a spell table
To do this, place a book on the workbench in the central box of the highest row, a diamond in the central boxes of the right and left column, a block of obsidian in the central box and in the entire lower row. You should see the spell table icon appear on the right side of the workbench.
On console, select the spell table from the workbench section of the "Structures" tab
Step 8. Place the spell table on the ground
Repeat the steps you followed to place the workbench.
Step 9. Open the spell table
A window will open where you can put a book.
Step 10. Put the book on the table
Simply drag it into the appropriate box (PC).
- In Minecraft PE, press the book on the left side of the screen to place it inside the table.
- On console, select the book from the inventory.
Step 11. Select a spell
The level of magic depends on that of your character. Selecting a spell will cast it on the book, turning it purple.
- For example, if you are level 3, you can select any level 1, 2 or 3 spell.
- The spells are random, so you won't be able to choose the one you prefer.
Step 12. Select the book
This way you will put it in the inventory. Now that you have an enchanted book, you can transfer the spell to an object.
In Minecraft PE, you have to double-tap on the book to add it to the inventory
Method 2 of 2: Enchant an Item
Step 1. Get the materials needed to build an anvil
The Anvil allows you to use the Enchanted Book to upgrade an item. To create it, you need the following materials:
- Three iron blocks: To get a block of iron you need 9 ingots, so a total of 27 ingots.
- Four iron ingots: considering these bars, the total needed rises to 31.
- You can make iron ingots by placing the raw iron ore, the gray block with orange-brown spots, in a coal-fired furnace.
Step 2. Open the workbench
As mentioned earlier, a window with a three by three grid will open.
Step 3. Create the anvil
Place the three iron blocks on the top row of the workbench, three of the four ingots on the bottom row, and the last ingot in the center box, then select the anvil icon.
- In the PE version of Minecraft, press the black anvil icon on the left side of the screen.
- In the console version of Minecraft, select the anvil icon in the "Structures" tab.
Step 4. Place the anvil on the ground
You are now ready to craft an enchanted item.
Step 5. Open the anvil menu
A window with three boxes will open.
Step 6. Place the item you want to charm
You can choose the middle or leftmost box.
For example, you can put a sword in the anvil
Step 7. Place the enchanted book in the anvil
You can place it in the middle box or in the rightmost box.
Step 8. Select the object in the results box
You will see it in the pane to the right of the anvil window. Click on it and you will put it in the inventory.
Advice
- Some spells don't work on all items (for example "Smite" doesn't work on helmets).
- You can gain experience by killing enemies.
- You can find enchanted books in chests or buy them from villagers.
- The Roman numeral to the right of the spell indicates its power on a scale of one to four ("I" to "IV"). "I" is the weakest, "IV" the most powerful.
