Punk is not just a genre of music, but a true alternative lifestyle. In the effort to discover her own personality, a punk girl builds her own path and autonomously develops her own unique and unrepeatable style. A punk girl is proudly independent, bold and confident. He listens to stellar music, questions society and wears whatever expresses his very personal aesthetic sense. To become a punk girl you need to have a lot of confidence in your individuality.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Adopting a Punk Lifestyle and Attitude
Step 1. Listen to punk music
Music is an essential component of the punk lifestyle. In your playlists you shouldn't miss the classics like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, the legends of punk rock like the Bikini Kill and the groups of the contemporary scene like the Tacocat. In addition to listening to music at home or around town, it would also be wise for you to pay homage to the roots of the movement by making a commitment to attend concerts.
Step 2. Create your own zine
Since the advent of the punk movement in the seventies, those who are part of it have manifested and expressed their way of being through self-produced magazines: the fanzines (or 'zines). In the nineties, punk girls used 'zines to create their own space and to make their voices heard within the movement. Start a 'zine with your punk friends, so that you can express your common opinions and interests.
- He uses the technique of clippings taken from traditional magazines and reassembled in a creative and irreverent way.
- As for the content of a zine, there are no fixed rules or limits. It was created to look like what it is: a "do it yourself" magazine. You can self-publish as much material as you want.

Step 3. Embrace your punk creed
If you identify with a punk, don't bother trying to conform to social standards that define appropriate female behavior. Instead of stifling your personality, proudly present the truest version of yourself to the world. Don't apologize for who you are or what you believe in.
Step 4. Don't do what you have to do, do what you want to do
As a punk, you have the right to make your own way in life. Organize your time at your own pace. Set your own goals and set your own standards. Enjoy life and do what makes you feel good in the present moment.
Your personal standards reveal how you treat others and how you expect others to treat you. When you set your own standards of behavior, you give up the control that the company has over your stock. Start by evaluating your current standards: what are the ones that inspire your actions? Did you define them yourself? Then let your punk attitude towards life determine the evolution of your goals and expectations: what standards will you continue to accept? What others are against your beliefs?
Step 5. Challenge social conventions
Punks refuse to blindly follow society's rules of conduct. As a punk, you always question social conventions and dictates. It is in your own interest to analyze the phenomenon of capitalism, to evaluate the work of the government, to deepen the themes of religion, patriotism and globalization. When drawing conclusions, let your findings define your way of life. Share your views freely.
You can deepen these topics at school, especially in courses that concern gender studies and that favor an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach. You can also monitor your own training on these topics yourself. Ask friends, teachers, and people you inspire for if they can recommend reading or documentaries on a variety of discussion topics
Part 2 of 3: Finding Your Punk Style
Step 1. Create an eclectic wardrobe
Punk clothing defies categorizations. This eclectic style, so difficult to define, is made up of clothing made with your hands, grunge elements and extreme avant-garde accessories on the border with the gothic style. Mix and match different elements until you can find the look that identifies you best.
- Punks love to make their own items. If you do not have the necessary skills to make your own clothes, try to combine the elements of your wardrobe in an original way, in order to create your unique and inimitable look. For example, you can sew studs on an old denim jacket, or apply spikes to the collar of a shirt.
- Experiment with grunge. To add a grunge touch to your wardrobe, try layering clothing in layers, tying a flannel shirt at the waist.
- Add edgy and gothic items to your wardrobe. Buy skirts, pants, and jackets in leather or faux leather. Introduce the gothic element by pairing a simple black garment with edgy accessories.
- If you want to refer to the classic punk look, combine plaid fabric with rocker clothing - for example an old tee with a rock band logo.
Step 2. Experiment with different punk styles
Since the 1970s, punk fashion has continued to evolve. Consequently, it is very varied. Basically, it is extreme, provocative and anti-materialistic. Its subgenres are glam punk and pop punk:
- Glam punk retains the basics of punk fashion, but introduces bright colors, stretch fabrics, leather, and sometimes leopard-print fabrics.
- Pop punk is also rooted in traditional punk values, but features skinny jeans, leather jackets and band t-shirts.
Step 3. Put on the classic punk shoes
Shoes can make or break a punk look. Invest in these classic and elegant punk footwear:
- Dr. Martens boots.
- Combat Boots.
- Black ankle boots.
- Adidas (high or low).
Step 4. Add accessories
Punk accessories range from outrageously extreme and sinister looking, to simple and chic. Buy some studded accessories: jewelry, hair bands, bags. Buy items like neck chains, handcuffs and simple earrings, which you can combine in a myriad of ways. Among the most popular accessories are:
- Rings, earrings and necklaces with skulls
- Pointed earrings
- Collars and choker
Part 3 of 3: Get creative with the Punk Hairstyle and Makeup
Step 1. Try a new hair color that is bold
A punk girl can dare even very aggressive colors. There are several ways to add vibrancy and color to your hair:
- Dye your hair passionately red, outrageous orange, or tender lavender.
- Add some stripes and dots of color. Throw yourself in streaks or patches of hot pink leopard.
Step 2. Experiment with different extreme hairstyles
A punk girl defines her own style: she doesn't follow trends and she doesn't copy other punk girls. As a result, there is no universal hairstyle. You can choose to do the crest, or just shave one side of the skull. You can cut layered and asymmetrical hair, or with a regular bob. You can deliberately leave them unkempt, get dreads, or style them to perfection - all options are valid.
Step 3. Apply bold makeup and abound with color
A punk girl completes her look with very intense eye make-up and heavy lipstick.
- Never forget the eyeliner. You can choose to wear a traditional black one or go for a more vibrant color, such as blue, green or purple.
- Put on the eyeshadow. Make sure to draw attention to the eyes with a generous dose of black or colored eyeshadow.
- Put on a deep lipstick. A punk girl is not afraid of non-traditional makeup. Dare to go for a black, green, purple or blue lipstick.
Advice
Everything on the list is optional. Being punk really means being just yourself and expressing yourself freely: if you and the character you represent are "punk", then you are in all respects! Don't feel obligated to do anything that doesn't belong to you: not being true to yourself is the least punk thing you could do
Warnings
- If you intend to wear a t-shirt with a band logo, make sure you have at least heard of it!
- Some people don't like punks, but don't worry about them. Just be yourself.
- Don't brag online about being punk - no one would take you seriously.
