In the post 9/11 world, airport security has increased exponentially. A once positive experience has now become fraught with anxiety. Long lines, intrusive attendants and grumbling people make checking into the airport one of the least desirable aspects of the trip. By following these steps you will be able to overcome this part 'smoothly' too.
Steps
Step 1. Be prepared
Before heading to the airport, take the necessary precautions to make your experience as easy as possible.
- Wear practical shoes. Those moccasin-like ones will be easy to take off. Obviously they have to be comfortable to endure the long lines.
- Avoid accessories and clothing with metal parts as you will need to remove them before going under the metal detector. The same goes for metal items in pockets.
- Put liquids and gels in suitable packages. All liquids in hand luggage must be less than 70ml and must be kept in resealable, transparent plastic bags. The exceptions are baby milk and liquid medicines, but check before putting them in your luggage anyway.
- Organize your things so that if there are any problems you can open the bag and check and move on.
- Avoid smuggling. Check first to make sure that everything you carry in your hand luggage is allowed on the plane. Otherwise you may be forced to throw it away or even face an interrogation, until you are stopped.
Step 2. Have your boarding pass and photo ID ready before you arrive at the yellow line
Sometimes, the queue runs quickly despite being long and experienced travelers can get irritated if people waste time searching for the necessary documents.
Step 3. Pay attention to the signs even while you are in line
Notice what others forget.
Step 4. Put your boarding pass and ID back in place as soon as you've been checked
Place it in a pocket for it to be checked again, and put the document back in the bag to keep it safe.
Step 5. Remove the essentials from your hand luggage as soon as you arrive at the metal detector, placing everything on the walking belt along with the luggage, or in the special baskets
Most airports require you to remove your liquid bag and laptop from your baggage, but always follow local instructions.
Step 6. Make shoe removal easier
Airport Authorities require shoes to be removed before passing through the metal detector. There is no room to bend over. People will try to avoid you and the seats are far away. Wear shoes that are easy to take off without having to bend over or untie them while in line and tuck the laces inside. This way you can take them off and put them on the X-ray tape.
Step 7. Take off the necessary clothes
Remove metal objects, jackets and hats depending on the airport.
Step 8. Go through the metal detector when the clerk points it out to you
If you are chosen for a further check, accept without delay and politely.
Step 9. Collect your things and fix them
Make sure you have everything, leave the security area and make room for the other passengers.
Advice
- While in line, be prepared to pass the metal detector and x-ray. Remove the pc from the luggage, take off your shoes, etc. When you get to the containers, all you have to do is put the stuff in and let it slide onto the belt. If you are traveling with company, have them help you pick up the items.
-
Stay calm and avoid behaviors that can arouse suspicion or anxiety, especially if they take you aside to check.
If you are asked to stop and be checked, be courteous and respectful. Security is just doing its job
- Put the coins in your wallet. Fix anything that might trigger a check on top of the bag so you can take it off quickly and effortlessly.
- Try not to keep too many coins in your pocket. You will need to take them out and put them in the trash. Collecting coins, putting on your shoes, and taking your belongings can get annoying.
- Put small items such as change, watch, cell phone, or keys in your jacket or coat pocket or carry-on while standing in line. You can take them off once you are at the gate.
Warnings
- Don't play jokes, especially those related to bombs and terrorists, as you go through security. Airlines take threats seriously and you could get in trouble.
- Keep your boarding pass and passport handy. Do not pack them in your luggage because you would have problems.
- Listen to the instructions being broadcast over the speakers and follow them. Remember that security is for everyone.
- Be prepared to look for any type of flight in case you choose the standby formula; grab your luggage, check in and go!
