Life can be difficult. Some people seem to be able to face problems with courage, coming out stronger. They manage to climb the most inaccessible mountains of their existence. Others, on the other hand, do not seem able to recover from difficulties and end up bitterly blaming others or God for their misfortunes, sinking into depression. Those who survive and thrive despite challenges are above all those who believe, those who have faith in God and know that they will be helped in difficult times. Here are six steps to follow to gain the ability to believe in God when life tests you.
Steps
Step 1. Stop thinking that life should always go your way
God answers every prayer, but not always with a "yes". Sometimes he says "no" or "wait". When things are going well be happy, enjoy each day looking for the good in it, but avoid basking in the idea of a life without problems. We are free to do good or not. So, sometimes bad things happen and we don't get what we want because at that moment it wouldn't do us any good. Remember that God knows these things better than you do. Remind yourself that He has your best interests at heart and that He loves you.
Step 2. Ask God for help by praying
But remember that he never promised to shield you in the face of difficulties. He promised to be by your side if you want him. Being angry and blaming Him won't help you go through your vale of tears. Asking Him to stay by your side can instead help you resist more than you would alone. You will wonder how to pray: simply by talking and trusting that God is listening to you. Pray that He will give you strength and make you feel better, instead of just asking Him to eliminate the difficulties. You will grow in faith and courage if you pray this way.
Step 3. Read or listen to the stories of others
Their experiences will be useful to you. William Sirls writes in his book, “God Spares Us Not Trials… He Helps Us Overcome Them.” (The Reason), but there are other books about people who testify to God's help during hardships that can give you hope.
Step 4. Be grateful
Make a list of the things you appreciate in your life, even if it's the classic roof over your head or lunch on the table. Thank God for that. The simple act of realizing the positive things in your life helps you have a more positive attitude and helps you see God's hand in everything, good or bad.
Step 5. Go beyond yourself
Stay with people who can help or encourage you. Any difficult situation looks worse if you go it alone. Ask others to support you, pray for you, and do the same for them. Offer help to those who are worse off so you can put your problems in perspective.
Step 6. Adopt an eternal perspective
God promises to make us feel good if we believe. But it does not tell us that it will happen immediately, in this earthly life. Some prayers are answered in heaven. You will be able to trust God when you focus on the fact that this life (its struggles and pains) is temporary, but Heaven is eternal.
Advice
- Look beyond yourself. Read books, talk to others, pray.
- Think positive. Focus on what is good, tell yourself that you will succeed. And that you trust in God.
