Steps
Method 1 of 1: Make Your Own Funny Comic
Step 1. Practice drawing people, animals, backgrounds and props such as furniture, food, a TV etc
Step 2. Create the characters
Choose catchy names. Experience any type of character, don't limit yourself to ordinary people. Try superheroes, aliens, inanimate objects that, however, speak and have human traits in the comic. And don't forget the animals. Animals are excellent characters because they can mimic or emphasize certain characteristics. For example, you can make a smart character by drawing an owl with a big head, a cantankerous character by drawing a dog with a frown, or a character who always sees the fun side of life by drawing a hyena with a bright smile.
Step 3. Think of a short and funny story, or a humorous sketch with a joke
Also make sure to adapt the lines to the age of the audience you want to reach. For example, complicated jokes will be difficult for children to understand.
Step 4. Make a draft of your first comic
Use the story or line to develop the plot. A draft is a basic version of your comic, to show the topic, using stick figures or quick drawings.
Step 5. Find a cool name for your comic
Make sure it's suitable for the topic of the comic.
Step 6. Make a nice copy of your comic
A "nice copy" is the real version of the comic, complete with details and colors. You can scan the comic and color it on the computer if you are good at computer science.
Step 7. Show the comic to your family and friends
Ask them to read it to help you gauge how fun it is and how successful it will be (and thus guide you in making future comics).
Step 8. Keep your comic safe because you may want to get it published someday
Advice
- Sometimes families can be a great source of inspiration! Try depicting a funny moment or family story in your comic. If you decide to do this, however, make sure you don't make a comic that is too long and that it doesn't refer to jokes that only you and your family can understand. If you need to explain the jokes to readers, the comic becomes a lot less fun.
- Take a notebook with you wherever you go. A good idea can come at any time, so be ready to write it down, because the chances of forgetting it will be high.
- Not all comics are strips. You can make a "Sunday comic" (long, usually takes up a lot of space) or a "weekly comic" (short, usually consisting of three or four panels), or even a one-panel comic!
- Start drawing the draft with a pencil to be able to erase it if necessary; once you get the hang of it you can draw the cartoon directly with pen and paper.
- If you have a tendency to write comics with a lot of words and your artistic skills are acceptable, maybe you can try your hand at a comic novel. This type of comic, while taking a long time to make, can be very rewarding and fun to do.
- If you make a mistake during the making of the comic, don't get angry and try again.
- When drawing the outline, do not put pressure with the pencil on the paper but proceed as light as a feather. In this way you will see the drawing better, also because there will not be many erasure marks.
- Looking at existing comics for style ideas and ideas isn't bad, but don't copy. It is very important that you develop your own style.
- Don't rely too much on what your parents tell you. In their eyes, everything you do is beautiful even when it is terrible.
Warnings
- The characters in your comic don't have to say the line directly. Doing so will be 15 times more fun.
- Make the cartoon with a pencil. Using the pen is a bad idea because if you make even one small mistake you have to start the comic all over again.
- Don't copy other comics. People will notice right away and you will be infringing copyright. A cartoonist with a bad reputation will never be successful.
