While there are no specific tools that allow us to see spirits, you can always try some methods. If you can find a place where the spirits are present, you can plan an excursion, start looking for ghosts, noting your progress, and staying safe the moment you can interact with them. Steps
Part 1 of 3: Finding the Right Place
Step 1. Go where there might be ghosts
Historic places, which have experienced ups and downs, traumas and triumphs. Houses where many generations have lived, old hospitals or abandoned buildings, warships, abandoned hotels or other places where there might indeed be spirits. Cities like London, Paris, New Orleans or states like Japan are particularly known for the possible presence of spirits due to their intriguing stories.
Non-historical places such as shopping malls or new buildings, for example, are not very likely to encounter spirits, as there is no evidence, history or legends to make one think so. You need to focus on paranormal areas and have knowledge of what happened in the past
Step 2. Look for spooky places in your area
Most of the time, you don't need to go too far to see ghosts - every little town has some spooky areas to explore. Go to your municipal library and research the history of the area you live in, talk to an expert or sign up for ghost hunting tours. Create a list of places you will visit in the dark.
If you live in a rural area, many "ghost hunts" take place near particular intersections, train tracks, abandoned bridges, cemeteries or places where there have been murders
Step 3. Watch the famous "American Hunt"
If you live in the United States consider going to the following places:
- Stanley Hotel: in Estes Park, Colorado, where the famous room 417 was used for Stephen King's classic The Shining.
- Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop in New Orleans, Louisiana, where you have the option of sneaking to the bar and ordering a drink hoping to meet a pirate or two.
- Eastern State Penitentiary, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This prison is now closed, but it is said that it is still run by the now dead inmates.
Step 4. Check out some of the most famous places where you can spot spirits
In the Japanese forest Aokigahara, also called the "forest of suicides", about 500 people have died since 1950. In the Tower of London - which was a prison during the Middle Ages - there are numerous places to visit. Here you will find a short list of the most famous in the world where you can meet ghosts.
- Beechworth Lunatic Asylum (Victoria, Australia), where 9,000 people died from 1867 to 1995.
- Hellfire Club in Montpelier Hill (Ireland), it was originally built as a hunter's lodge, but has a long history connected with demons and ghosts.
- Borley Rectory, Sudbury (Great Britain), you can find anything: a tragic relationship between a monk and a nun? A gruesome monastery built on the grounds of an ancient druid cemetery? These ruins are the most famous when it comes to ghost stories.
- Rose Hall (Jamaica) is famous because a voodoo priest died there and is said to have made bloodstains appear and disappear in the walls. If you wish, when you visit this place you can sleep where a woman tortured 3 husbands and committed human sacrifices.
Step 5. Research places where terrible events have occurred
You don't need to plan big trips to find spirits. Go to places that may be somehow paranormal, where the spirits have valid reasons for staying. Search on murder sites, prisons or other places with ghost-related legends.

Part 2 of 3: Looking for Ghosts
Step 1. Plan a trip to the witching hour
If you know a good location and have the time and willingness to scare you, plan your excursions between 9pm and 6am. These are the times when most of the ghost activities are reported.
Try exploring the area during the day with a map first, when you can see the routes clearly. If you go on an adventure, make sure you don't enter private property
Step 2. Bring the equipment you need to spot ghosts
Check the climatic conditions and the necessary tools. Finding yourself in the middle of a forest at 3 am is not the best. Here's what you'll need:
- Clothes suitable for the climate.
- A map of the area, if you're not familiar with it.
- Digital camera.
- Torch.
- Clock.
- Diary or something to write about.
- Mobile phone.
- Batteries and chargers.
Step 3. Be calm, respectful and quiet
The first experience with a ghost search can include many different emotions. You may be seriously scared or you may even laugh. Either way, you need to learn to stay calm by controlling thoughts and emotions as it is not the right time to play when dealing with such situations. You also can't get distracted or you risk not spotting the spirits.
Slow down the movements of your eyes and analyze the place very carefully. Focus on your field of vision and begin to feel presences by keeping your eyes relaxed and receptive
Step 4. Concentrate with your whole body
More than seeing them, you should feel their presence. Watch out for any unusual occurrences.
- Use both sight and hearing. Listen closely for any possible whispering, rustling, or other noises that may indicate the presence of ghosts. Consider bringing a tape recorder with you to record any possible attempts at interacting with ghosts. You may not hear them, but when you listen to the recording again you may find some unusual noises or sounds.
- Use all your senses. Look for hot or cold spots, common signs of paranormal phenomena. Pay attention to any feelings and experiences during the ghost hunt.
- Be aware of any instincts that make you apprehensive, or the feeling that someone is watching you. If you can live these experiences, recording the event is always an unforgettable experience.
Step 5. Make videos
Recording ghost hunting with a video camera is common practice. However, it is better to use a good quality one for later viewing. Those of cell phones, for example, may not be good.
- Consider using a camera with a night function, or, to give your footage a more realistic view, you can use natural light or the light from the flashlight you are using. It depends on you.
- You could assign tasks to members of your group. For example, if you are filming, another person will take pictures and still another will take notes, and if there is a chance there will be the group member who will communicate and try to ask questions.
Step 6. Take lots of photos
Use a high quality digital camera. Especially in the dark there are numerous possibilities of missing out on fantastic opportunities because you are distracted or excited. But the camera doesn't lie and has a fantastic chance to show evidence.
When you're done, examine the photos closely and look for anomalies like shadows, light globes, or things floating in the air that you haven't seen live
Part 3 of 3: Stay Safe
Step 1. Never go ghost hunting alone
Gather a team of thrill-loving, like-minded ghost hunters. Assign different tasks to each one, and let everyone's families know where you have gone and what you are doing in case difficulties arise.
Step 2. Prepare yourself mentally and spiritually
Start and finish the hunt by introducing yourself to the ghosts. It might sound ridiculous, especially if you're skeptical, but it will help ease the tension and increase your chances of interacting with spirits.
Let the spirits you may meet know that you are relaxed and peaceful, so that they stay in their place and don't follow you home! If you prefer, say a short prayer or do some other rituals with the members of your group so they will all be relaxed - spirits included
Step 3. Be careful not to trespass
Don't wander into other people's properties and don't be aggressive. When you're on the hunt for ghosts, the last thing you want is an angry landowner - maybe with a shotgun.
Step 4. Try to communicate responsibly
If you intend to try to communicate with ghosts you may encounter, be extremely careful and take a curious and innocent attitude. The spirit world sees through the outer aspects, so you must have good intentions when trying to talk to the dead.
Take ghost hunting very seriously. Creating turmoil between life and death is something very profound even if you are somehow skeptical. Many novice immature people mask their initial fears with jokes and laugh at them. Don't be swayed by them
Step 5. Consider joining a ghost searcher group or organization
If you want to take this pastime more professionally and have access to specific materials and advanced techniques, contact the experts.
Advice
- Your mind must always be open. If you don't believe in paranormal activities and you start with the idea of not being able to meet ghosts, you certainly won't meet them.
- On YouTube and other sites you can find not very reliable information about spells that allow you to communicate with spirits, such as looking at the sun or singing. In this way, you will probably be able to see only floating traces or simple visual phenomena. Don't spoil your sight for trying to see ghosts.
