The goldfish plant (Nematanthus gregarius) is a houseplant with dark green leaves and red flowers that resemble the shape of the goldfish. This particular plant blooms almost all year round and, although it is quite resistant, it requires a lot of care and attention.
Steps
Step 1. If you don't have the plant yet, buy it from a nursery, or plant it with sprouts
In the second case, put three or four sprouts in a standard-sized pot; the plant should grow in about four weeks.
Step 2. Put the vase in a bright place
However, don't place it directly in sunlight, but choose a spot that is neither too hot nor too cold.
Step 3. Provide sufficient moisture for the plant
To make sure it receives the right hydration, place it on a vase with pebbles and sprinkle it with water daily.
Step 4. Do not overdo the water
The roots of this plant species don't have to be wet, so be careful about the amount of water you give them.
Step 5. Feed your plant
Use a liquid fertilizer rich in phosphates and mix it with a quart of water to make it less aggressive.
Step 6. Take care of your plant
With a knife, cut about a third of the roots starting from the base every two years. Transfer it and put some fresh earth.
Advice
- This plant has periods in which it rests. If you notice that the leaves are falling off, reduce the amount of water for about a month, then go back to giving them to drink as before.
- If you live in warm areas, you can also grow the plant outside.
Warnings
- Aphids are attracted to the goldfish plant.
- Do not place it near drafts.
