The sarong is a very versatile garment to definitely pack for a holiday; it is perfect to wear both as a swimsuit cover on the beach and as a dress for going out at night. During the winter months, however, its very summery appearance is not ideal. To get one you can buy it online, but you would pay a lot for it, in addition to the fact that you have to bear the shipping and customs costs, or you can choose a fabric you like and follow the steps listed in this article to create one.
Steps
Step 1. Determine the size of the sarong you intend to make, based on your measurements
If you are petite, 91cm width should suffice, but if you have a larger line, 1.1m width is better. The average size is 1.8m, but you can choose the most appropriate one according to your height.
Step 2. Go to a fabric store in your area and choose the lightweight fabric you like best
Cotton, charmeuse silk or silk chiffon are good alternatives. The width of the fabric should be at least the size you need, while for the length, the store will cut the one you want. If you are unsure of the exact measurements, it is better to have some extra fabric.
Step 3. When you are at home, arrange the fabric on you, to verify that the length is correct and to determine what the final width and length should be
Step 4. If necessary, adjust the length and width of the sarong
-
Use a tape measure to measure the width and / or width of the sarong from the top to the right end and pin as a boundary.
-
Cut the fabric measured in the previous step with a pair of dressmaker scissors. You can turn the fabric inside out and draw a line between the pins with a pencil, or you can use a ruler to cut a straight line. After cutting it, the fabric will have a rectangular shape.
Step 5. Finish by sewing the raw and cut edges
-
Fold each edge of the sarong towards the back of the fabric for 6mm.
-
Fold again, always 6 mm, stop with a pin and pass with the iron to make everything flatter and easily workable.
-
Sew each folded edge with a sewing machine. Make sure you choose a thread that is the same color as the fabric or that is in harmony with the rest.
Step 6. Finish
You can wear the sarong like a dress
-
Or you can wear it as a skirt.
Advice
- If you take a fabric that is already the width you want and already has edges or selvedges, you can choose to simply pull out the threads of the unsewn edges, until you have fringes. It is an easier way to have a sarong without sewing it.
- Add some bow on the edges for a more sophisticated look.
