Did you run out of glitter glue in the middle of a DIY project? Couldn't find the color you needed? Whatever the problem, glitter glue can always be created at home. As well as being quick and easy to make, it's also more fun to use. Knowing how to prepare it will allow you to never run out and will ensure you have all the colors you need.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Prepare a Writing Glue
Step 1. Get a pack of clear glue
The bottle should have a pointed spout; this will make it easier to squeeze the glue and use it to draw. Try to get clear glue. Vinyl becomes dull as it dries, reducing the shimmering effect of glitter.
Prepare this type of glue if you want to draw, write letters or outline an outline. If, on the other hand, you intend to cover a large area, click here to learn how to prepare a glue that can be applied with a brush
Step 2. Squeeze some glue into a jar
You don't have to squeeze a lot: more or less a spoonful should be enough. Close the container tightly and set it aside for other projects. You will need to remove some of the glue to make room for the glitter.
If you want an even shinier final product, remove larger amounts of glue
Step 3. Open a container of extra-fine scrapbooking glitter
Avoid the normal ones: being large, there is a greater risk of clogging the bottle.
Step 4. Remove the cap from the glue bottle and add about 1 tablespoon (15g) of glitter
You can always pay in more at a later time if that's not enough for you. Keep in mind that the shimmering effect of glitter glue tends to be more visible after drying.
Step 5. To make the glue more colorful when it dries, try adding a few drops of food coloring
When the glitter glue dries, only the glitter can be seen. If the final effect doesn't satisfy you, add a few drops of food coloring. This way you will have some colored glitter after drying.
- The more dye you add, the more intense the final color will be.
- If you are going to use white or iridescent glitter, you can choose any type of dye. Light colors are more suitable than dark ones.
- Try to match the food coloring to the color of the glitter. For example, if you use blue glitter, opt for a blue food coloring. Adding more dye will intensify the final color.
Step 6. Close the bottle tightly and shake it to mix the ingredients
Make sure the spout is tightly screwed before proceeding. If the glitter and glue don't mix evenly, turn the bottle upside down before shaking.
Step 7. Add more glitter if needed
It may be necessary to add more glitter to achieve the desired effect, but this depends on the size of the glue bottle.
Step 8. Use glue to make glitter designs and letters in an art project
Try to go for simple motifs, such as spirals, snowflakes, cobwebs, hearts, and stars. It is also great for outlining the edges of handmade cards.
Draw cobwebs or snowflakes on a sheet of wax paper. Let the glue dry, then peel off the design. Hang it up to decorate or use it as a window sticker
Method 2 of 2: Prepare a Paint Glue
Step 1. Pour some glue into a jar
You can use vinyl or clear glue. You can also choose decoupage glue, such as Mod Podge. If you plan to apply it to a pair of shoes, opt for decoupage glue or Mod Podge, which also has a sealing function and offers a longer lasting finish.
Step 2. Add some glitter
Calculate 1 part glitter for 2 parts glue. The most suitable glue is the extra-fine scrapbooking glue, as it offers an optimal finish.
Try adding glitter or metallic confetti to get a textured surface. Don't use paper confetti instead
Step 3. Stir until smooth
You can mix with a popsicle stick, fork or spoon.
Step 4. Add more glue or glitter until the desired effect is achieved
If you prefer it to be less shiny, add more glue. If you prefer it to be shinier, use more glitter. If you are going to decorate an object, such as a frame or a pair of shoes, remember that you can always gradually layer the glue for an even brighter effect.
Step 5. Use glue
Apply it with a brush. Try to get one with stiff bristles. Natural bristle brushes do not promote proper adhesion. Wash the brush and close the package tightly after application.
- If you want to get a particularly shiny effect, let the glue dry before making a second pass. Keep layering it (and letting it dry between applications) until you get the desired result.
- If you use light glue, such as pale pink or white, you should apply a coat of acrylic paint before continuing. The paint must be the same color as the glitter. Let it dry before applying the glitter glue.
- The glitter may peel off, especially if you've applied it over a large area. Let it dry, then apply a thin layer of decoupage glue or Mod Podge to set the glitter and keep it from falling out.
Advice
- If you want the glue to be colored, add a few drops of food coloring.
- School glue is washable, as long as no food coloring is added.
- Use glitter glue to decorate handmade cards, Christmas decorations, photo frames and boxes.
- Experiment with different amounts of glitter.
Warnings
- Do not let the glue dry on the brushes, otherwise it will be almost impossible to remove it.
- To prevent the glue from drying out, close the bottle or jar tightly when you finish using it.
