Glitter shoes are glamorous and add a touch of light to any type of outfit. Whether it's a pair of red slippers or shiny shoes for a special event, why not avoid the effort of shopping around trying to find the perfect pair and just make your own? Glitter shoes are easy and inexpensive to make at home, you can even choose any color for the sequins or the style of your shoe! The perfect DIY.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Collecting Materials
Step 1. Choose your shoes
The first step in your project is to find the perfect pair of shoes. Since this is a handcrafted job, you probably won't decide to use a new pair of shoes and cover them in sequins.
- For this type of work, the best pair of shoes you can choose is an old, comfortable one. If you don't have a pair of these, try searching thrift stores.
- The color of the shoes is indifferent because they will be covered anyway and it will not be possible to identify the original color.
- The styles that suit glitter best are ballet flats and heels. Any shoe with laces or tears will involve more work and the glitter will tend to go away faster.
Step 2. Choose the right glitter
The type of glitter you choose determines the final result of the final product. For this reason it is important to choose a more expensive glitter.
- A more precious type of glitter will give a homogeneous effect to the shoe.
- The color for the sequins is at your discretion, you can use a single color or mix them and create a rainbow of colors on the shoes.
Step 3. Choose the suitable glue
The type of glue you use is very important for the success of the product. A glue suitable for this type of work dries evenly and keeps the glitter attached to the shoes for a long time.
- You can find the perfect glue if you search in artisan shops or online crafts. It is best to buy a specific glue for this DIY job.
- In case you can't find the perfect glue, you can rely on generic fabric glue, which will do a good job anyway.
Step 4. Collect the rest of the materials
Along with the glitter and glue you will need other things to finish the piece.
- Take an old newspaper, you will use it as a workplace. It is necessary if you want to avoid spilling glitter everywhere.
- Get a plastic cup or bowl for glitter and glue, a plastic or wooden spoon to glue them.
- Take two paint brushes, one for the glued glitters and the other for the final layer of glue.
- Before starting, make sure the soles of your shoes are covered.
Part 2 of 2: Applying the Glitter
Step 1. Clean your shoes
Make sure the shoes are clean, if necessary use a cloth or sponge with water to clean them better.
Step 2. Cover both soles to prevent sequins from sticking underneath the shoes
- This is a very important step, the glue can slide easily under the soles, which is why it is important to cover the soles carefully.
- If you use shoes with heels remember to cover up to the tip of the heel.
- Fill the inside of the shoes with newspaper or paper.
- Mix the glue with the glitter. Now the fun begins! Pour the glue into the cup, add the glitter and mix well. To get the perfect texture you need to use two parts of glue for one of glitter. The result has a pasty and dense consistency.
- It is important to find the right texture, the right combination of the amount of glue and glitter.
Step 3. Apply the first layer of glitter, better to apply the first layer finely and then go over it than to apply a first layer too heavy
- Don't worry if the glue appears white and visible, when it dries it becomes transparent.
- Once the first layer of glitter is past, store your shoes in a safe place to dry.
Step 4. Apply the second and third layer of glitter
When the first layer dries, you can apply a second and third layer of glitter to your shoes (waiting for the glue to dry).
- You can also apply loose glitter on the shoes to give a three-dimensional effect and more shine!
- After you have applied the third layer you should no longer be able to identify the original color of the shoes.
- If the shoes are not fully covered, you can do as many layers as you like.
Step 5. Seal the glitter
Once the last layer of glue has dried, apply a final layer of glue only to both shoes.
- Use a new plastic cup and shot glass.
- Alternatively, use spray glue.
Step 6. Let the glue dry
Put the shoes in a protected and ventilated place and let them dry overnight.
Step 7. Add details
You can add whatever you want. Remember that they are quite original shoes even so.
Step 8. Remove the sole and newspaper protector and your shoes are ready to wear and admire
Good fun!
