Are you learning to crochet? Do you want to practice your new skills by focusing on a fun project? This simple scheme is a good way to understand the principles of crochet. Legwarmers can be made by adapting them to your tastes. Choose the yarn, color, length and start work.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Preparing to Crochet
Step 1. Choose the yarn
In addition to choosing the color you want to wear, you should also take texture into account. Make sure the yarn is comfortable and easy to work with. Buy several skeins of yarn, but all with the same batch of dye, otherwise you may notice slight color differences between one and the other.
Remember that the thicker the thread, the warmer the leg warmers will be. You can of course use a thinner yarn, as long as you are aware that they won't be as comfortable as those made with a heavier yarn
Step 2. Choose the crochet hook
Basically this decision depends on the type of yarn chosen. The size of the crochet hook recommended for that specific yarn should be indicated on the packaging of the skeins of yarn.
You don't necessarily have to follow the suggestion regarding the size of the crochet, but if you don't choose the right one, the work could be tightly woven or too loose
Step 3. Make a small sample to check the thread tension
Samples are usually around 10.2 x 10.2cm in size. and have the same meshes that you will use in the diagram. If you keep the yarn too tight, you may need to use a larger crochet hook. Likewise, if the stitches are too loose, a smaller crochet may be needed.
Step 4. Determine the length of the leg warmers
Choose the desired length on the leg and take the measurements. Basically you will make a large crochet rectangle that you will later join. The long side of the rectangle should match the length you would like for the leg warmers.
Part 2 of 2: Making Crochet Leg Warmers
Step 1. Make a slip knot
Create a buttonhole about 15.2 cm. from the free end of the thread, which should hang behind the buttonhole. Insert the hook into the buttonhole and hook the free end before pulling it through the buttonhole and onto the hook.
Step 2. Make 100 single crochets
You can create more or less stitches in order to obtain a chain that corresponds to the desired length of the leg warmers. For adult legwarmers, you will likely make a chain around 27.9-38.1cm long. Take note of the number of chain stitches so that the other leg warmer is the same length.
To make a chain stitch you will need to hold the crochet hook with your right hand and wind the working thread on the index finger of the left hand. Hold the end of the slip knot between the thumb and middle finger of the left hand, then pass the thread backwards around the crochet handle, pulling it through the loop on the hook itself. Repeat this process to create the first row or base chain
Step 3. Make single crochets in the second row
Make 10 such stitches. If you want a visual cue that you need to single crochet, you can apply a marker.
To make a single crochet, insert the hook from the front to the back in the center of the second chain stitch starting from the hook. At this point you should have two buttonholes on the crochet hook. Throw the yarn or wrap it from right to wrong around the crochet hook and pass it through the chain. Once again you should have two buttonholes on the crochet hook. Throw in the yarn again and pull it through the two buttonholes. In this way you will get low knits
Step 4. Make a chain stitch, then turn the work over
Turning the work simply means turning it, so that the last stitch you worked becomes the beginning of the next row
Step 5. Make half treble crochets until you reach the last 10 stitches, which will be ten single crochets
To make a half double crochet, throw the yarn on the hook once and skip the first two stitches on the row. Insert the crochet hook in the center of the third stitch. Throw the yarn on the hook once and pass the three stitches through the chain. You will have three buttonholes on the crochet hook. Throw the thread on the hook again and pull the three stitches on the hook
Step 6. Make a chain stitch, then turn the work over
Remember that a chain at the beginning of a row of single crochets is not counted as a stitch.
Step 7. Single crochet in the back buttonholes of the first 10 single crochets only
Step 8. Make a half double crochet in the back buttonholes only until you reach the last ten single crochets
Step 9. Switch to single crochets in the back buttonholes for the last 10 stitches only
Step 10. Make a chain stitch, then turn the work over
Continue to work in the back buttonholes, repeating the procedure until you reach the desired length.
Step 11. Finish the crochet work and stop the thread
When the leg warmer is large enough to fit over the leg, it is time to finish the job. After the last stitch in the row, cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 27.9-38.1 cm. Keep the hook straight and pull the end of the thread completely through the stitch.
Step 12. Use a darning or sewing needle to sew the two parts of the single crochet edges using the tail you have left
You should perform the overedge to join them, passing through each stitch from right to wrong and repeating the operation going down the entire leg warmer.
