Making a crochet star is easy enough if you know a couple of basic crochet stitches. Here are some different ways you can try.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Classic 5-Pointed Star
Step 1. Make a magic ring
A magic ring is a type of adjustable ring made by forming a loop with wool, pulling through another ring, and making chain stitches to make the sides of the ring. It does not count as the first round.
- Form a loop around your fingers with the wool from the ball to the right and the tail to the left.
- Insert the hook into the loop, grab the ball of yarn from the back, and pull it through the loop from the front.
- Make two chain stitches.
- Pull the two ends in opposite directions to close the ring.
Step 2. Complete the first round
Make ten double weaves in the magic ring. When you are done, join the last double weave together with the first one using a sliding stitch.
-
To make a double weave, wrap the wool over the hook, insert the hook into the loop, and pass the wool over it again.
- Pull this wool through the loop, pass the wool over the hook again, and pull the top portion through the two loops on the hook.
- Wrap the wool onto the hook once more, and pull this new portion through the two loops on the hook.
- To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the next stitch on the loop, hook the wool, and pull it through the stitch of your project and the loop on your hook.
Step 3. Make the first tip
Row two chain stitches. In the next stitch of your loop, make another double weave. Make three more chain stitches, then work two single weaves around the vertical portion of the previous double weave. Make a sliding stitch in the next stitch from the first round.
-
For a single weave stitch, insert the hook through the appropriate stitch, grab the wool, and pull it back through the stitch.
- Grab the wool again.
- Pull the wool through the two loops on your crochet so that only one is left.
- When making these double bindings, insert the hook in the first stitch of the previous round. Complete the double weave steps as before to complete the stitch.
Step 4. Repeat the same steps for the remaining four tips
Form four more points using the same technique you used for the first point. When you are done, finish the last one with a sliding stitch in the first stitch of the original round.
- Make two chain stitches.
- In the next step, make a double weave.
- Make three more chain stitches.
- Make a sliding stitch in the next point.
- Thread two single weaves around the base of the double weave.
- Make a sliding stitch in the next stitch to close each stitch.
Step 5. Slip on the tails
Cut the wool and tuck the tails to hide them. With that, your star should be over.
-
You can use a darning needle to thread the tails, or you can tie the tail of your wool in one of the places and cut the tail off to hide it from view.
Method 2 of 4: Classic 6 Pointed Star
Step 1. Make a magic ring
A magic ring is a type of adjustable ring made by forming a ring with wool, pulling through another ring, and making chain stitches to make the sides of the ring.
Make 12 double weaves in the magic ring.
- Wrap the wool over the hook once more, and pull this new portion through the last two loops on the hook.
- To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the next stitch on the loop, hook the wool, and pull it through the stitch of your project and the loop on your hook.
Step 3. Complete a tip
Make two chain stitches before making a double interlace in the next stitch of the previous round. Make three more chain stitches, and then spin two single plaits into the base or vertical portion of the double plait stitch. Make a sliding stitch to the next stitch to close the toe.
-
For a single weave stitch, insert the hook through the appropriate stitch, grab the wool, and pull it back through the stitch.
- Grab the wool again.
- Pull the wool through the two loops on your crochet so that only one is left.
- For these double weaves, work the hook in the first stitch of the previous round instead of around the magic ring.
Step 4. Repeat 5 more times
Follow the same steps used to complete the first point to complete 5 more, Finish this second round of points by making a sliding stitch in the first point of your original round.
Method 3 of 4: Multicolored 5-Pointed Star
Step 1. Make a magic ring
A magic ring is a type of adjustable ring made by forming a ring with wool, pulling through another ring, and making chain stitches to make the sides of the ring. It does not count as the first round.
- Start with your first color, or Color A.
- Form a loop around your fingers with the wool from the ball to the right and the tail to the left.
- Insert the hook into the loop, grab the ball of yarn from the back, and pull it through the loop from the front.
- Make a single chain.
- Pull the two ends in opposite directions to close the ring.
Step 2. Make chain and single stitches to complete the first round
Make ten single weaves in the magic ring. Join the end of the weaves to the first using a sliding stitch.
-
For a single weave stitch, insert the hook through the appropriate stitch, grab the wool, and pull it back through the stitch.
- Grab the wool again.
- Pull the wool through the two loops on your crochet so that only one is left.
Step 3. Change the wool before making the second round
Pull the second color wool, Color B, onto the crochet hook. Weave a single chain, and then make two single weaves in the first stitch of the previous round. Make a single plait stitch in the next stitch of the previous round, and repeat. Join them to the first single weave of the second round using a sliding stitch.
To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the next stitch on the loop, hook the wool, and pull it through the stitch of your project and the loop on your hook
Step 4. Change the wool before doing the third round
Pull the third color wool, color C, onto the crochet hook. Weave five chain stitches and then make a single weave in the second chain from the hook. Make a half double weave in the next stitch, a double weave in the next one, and a triple weave in the next one. This creates a single point of the star.
- Skip two stitches and join the tail coming out of the ball to the previous round with a sliding stitch.
- Chain five more times and repeat the toe-making process four more times.
-
To make a half double weave, wrap the wool around the hook and insert the hook in the appropriate place.
- Wrap the wool over the hook again and pull it through the stitch.
- Pass the wool over the hook one more time before pulling it through all three loops on the hook to complete the half double stitch.
-
To make a double weave, wrap the wool over the hook, insert it in the appropriate place, and pass the wool over the hook again.
- Pull this wool through the loop, pass the wool over the hook again, and pull the top portion through the two loops on the hook.
- Wrap the wool over the hook once more, and pull this new portion through the two loops left on the hook.
-
To make a triple weave, wrap the wool twice on the hook before inserting it in the appropriate place.
- Wrap the wool onto the hook again before pulling the hook and wool through the stitch.
- Wrap the wool onto the hook again and pull it through the first two loops, leaving three on the hook.
- Wrap the wool on the hook and pull it through the two loops above.
- Wrap the wool on the hook and pull it through the two loops left on the hook. This should complete a triple weave.
Step 5. Make single weaves around the edges of all five points
As you do this, make a sliding stitch on the first sliding stitches you made and make two single stitches on the cimpa of each toe.
Cut the wool, fasten it, and tuck the tails. Alternatively, you could simply tie the remaining tails.,
Step 6. Make shallow sliding stitches around the edge
Make an initial sliding stitch to make a new color A loop on your crochet hook. Make shallow sliding stitches along the entire inner edge of the star, and then make shallow sliding stitches around your center as well.
Step 7. Slip on the tails
Cut the wool and tuck the tails inside the crochet star to hide them. With that, the star should be over.
You can use a darning needle to thread the tails, or you can tie the tail of your wool in one of the places and cut it to hide it from view
Method 4 of 4: Mini Desire Star
Step 1. Make a magic ring
A magic ring is a type of adjustable ring made by forming a ring with wool, pulling through another ring, and making chain stitches to make the sides of the ring. It does not count as the first round.
- Form a loop around your fingers with the wool from the ball to the right and the tail to the left.
- Insert the hook into the loop, grab the ball of yarn from the back, and pull it through the loop from the front.
- Make a chain stitch.
- Pull the two ends in opposite directions to close the ring.
Step 2. Make five single stitches
For the first round, pass five single stitches through the hole in the center of the magic ring. Use a slip stitch to join the last loop to the first single weave in the round to close it.
-
For a single weave stitch, insert the hook through the appropriate stitch, grab the wool, and pull it back through the stitch.
- Grab the wool again.
- Pull the wool through the two loops on your crochet so that only one is left.
- To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the next stitch on the loop, hook the wool, and pull it through the stitch of your project and the loop on your hook.
Step 3. Make chain stitches and single weaves for the next round
Make a chain of one, then make two single weaves in the next stitch of the previous round. Repeat this 5 times, then close the loop with another sliding stitch.
Step 4. Form the third round with half double weaves, double weaves and triple weaves
To form a star point, you will need to do a half double weave, a double weave, a triple weave, a double weave and another half double weave in the same stitch, which should be the next of the previous round. Repeat the action four times for a total of five points.
-
Make a half double weave by wrapping the wool around the crochet hook and inserting the hook in the appropriate place.
- Wrap the wool over the hook again and pull it through the stitch.
- Pass the wool over the hook one more time before pulling it through all three loops on the hook to complete the half double stitch.
-
To make a double weave, wrap the wool over the hook, insert it into the loop, and pass the wool over the hook again.
Step 5. Make a second star
Use the same process described above to make a second star of the same color and size as the first.
Trim the tail, leaving it long enough to sew the sides together. Row the central tail at the points of the star
Step 6. Stuff and sew the two stars together
Use a darning needle with the remaining wool tail of your star to sew the sides together. Before sewing the last half inch (1.25 cm), stuff the star with a small amount of stuffing, giving the star a little more "softness". Finish sewing the side to complete the project.
-
Alternatively, you can skip the stuffing and leave the star flat.
