A tawa is a thin metal plate that is very popular in Asia. You can use it to cook pizza on the stove instead of in the oven. All you have to do is prepare the dough, cook the base directly on the fire using the tawa and then garnish it as you wish. Use a pre-cooked pizza dough instead of making it at home to speed up the preparations.
Ingrediants
Dough for Pizza
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of instant yeast
- 3-4 tablespoons (45-60 ml) of water
Pizza topping
- 120 ml of pizza sauce
- 60 g of mozzarella
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Prepare the Pasta
Step 1. Pour 2 cups of all-purpose flour into a medium bowl
Make a hole in the center of the flour using a spoon or with your hands.
Step 2. Pour the sugar, salt, olive oil and yeast into the center of the flour
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of instant yeast. Mix the ingredients well.
Step 3. Knead for 5 minutes with your hands
While kneading, add 3-4 tablespoons (45-60 ml) of warm water to knead the dough into a spherical shape. When finished, it should be soft and round.
Step 4. Put the pasta in a greased medium sized bowl
Grease the inside of the bowl with oil. Slip the dough into it and set it aside.
Cover the bowl with a tea towel to speed up the leavening of the dough. The tea towel can be replaced with cling film or parchment paper
Step 5. Let the dough rise for 2 hours
At this point you can cook it. While you wait, prepare the pizza sauce.
Part 2 of 3: Bake the Pizza Dough
Step 1. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin until it is 1.5 cm thick
Make sure it enters the tawa you intend to use. If it's too big, remove a portion and roll it out again to make it smaller.
Step 2. Preheat a tawa over medium heat
Put the plate directly on the stove and let it preheat for at least 1 minute.
Step 3. Cook the pasta on the tawa for 2 to 3 minutes over medium heat
Make sure the dough is flat and centered on the plate. Cover the tawa with a lid while cooking.
Step 4. Turn the pizza dough with a spatula
Turn the heat down to low. The pizza base will continue to cook over low heat as you add the toppings.
Part 3 of 3: Add the Toppings
Step 1. Sprinkle 1/2 cup (120ml) of pizza sauce onto the base with a spoon
At this point the dough should continue to simmer on the tawa. When it comes to spreading the sauce, leave about 1.5 cm of space around the perimeter of the pizza.
Step 2. Sprinkle 60g of mozzarella on the pizza
Evenly distribute the cheese on the base. Leave about 1.5 cm of space around the edges, just like you did with the sauce.
Step 3. Add as many other toppings as you like
If you plan on using vegetables, be sure to cut them into small pieces to be able to eat pizza more easily. Leave about 1.5 cm of space around the edge of the pizza, as you did with the sauce and mozzarella.
Step 4. Cover the tawa and cook the pizza for 6 minutes over medium heat
Check it every 2 minutes to make sure it doesn't burn. Turn off the heat once the mozzarella has melted and the base of the pizza is golden.
Step 5. Move the pizza onto a tray with the help of a spatula and serve it
Cut it with a knife or pizza wheel.
