Are you tired of school and can't see a way out because your parents are working or unwilling to invest their time in home schooling? Don't worry, there is still hope! If you are a teenager, you can study on your own.
Steps
Step 1. Learn about homeschooling
Discover the benefits of homeschooling, including socialization, efficiency and personalization, but also about the different methods, such as unit study, notes, deschooling and home schooling. Reflect on what you would like to learn and the level of motivation you would have, choosing what is best for you. Read texts on this topic, such as "Homeschooling. Parental Education in Italy" by Erika Di Martino, trying to awaken the self-taught spirit that lives in you.
Step 2. Know the path to home schooling
Know your rights and duties in taking responsibility for parental education. It will probably be necessary to send a written communication each year to the educational management of your competence for the following year or to present an annual portfolio to testify your progress with the school leaders. Find out exactly what is required and whether you intend to follow through with your decision.
Step 3. Talk to your parents about your ideas
They will have to help you in the bureaucratic process. It is also important that they understand what you will be doing and why you want to study on your own.
Step 4. Decide what you want to study
Please note that there may be compulsory subjects or disciplines that you need to study to be admitted to university. Once you have mastered the basics, you will be free to add the subjects you like best, from gardening, to meditation, to art history, to the history of the royal families of Europe, to Asian studies, to foreign languages. There are no limits! If you find that your interests are not compatible with home education, think carefully! Wouldn't you like to delve into the history of video games? Or learn to write in Gothic calligraphy?
Step 5. Plan what you could study for each subject
For math, borrow or buy a used textbook, and solve the problems. For Italian, write short stories and essays on topics that interest you. Go to the library and check out some books. Even if you've always hated the classics in school, try reading them yourself. Maybe you thought you hated them because you got frustrated in class. If you can, go to the library and take advantage of the internet, as they are wonderful resources. Read the aforementioned "Homeschooling. Parental education in Italy" by Erika Di Martino or "Homeschooling: The Teen Years for ideas" by Cafi Cohen to get some ideas. The ideal would be to write a list of the objectives to be achieved in each subject and follow it.
Step 6. Talk to your parents about your plans and, if they approve, ask them to help you manage the legal and bureaucratic aspects
Perhaps it will be necessary to write a letter to the didactic direction of your competence and / or explain what you are going to study in each subject. If they're hesitant, offer a trial period. After that, try to impress them positively by demonstrating how your self-learning method works.
Step 7. Once all the paperwork has been resolved, get to work and do a good job
Do not let yourself go, otherwise you will regret it in the future. Work hard, but try to reap the full benefits of the self-learning process and the freedom that home education offers you. Plan time for friends, fun and creative activities.
Step 8. Keep a detailed record of your developments
Keep the checks, the photographs taken when you finish some study project or while you volunteer, and have fun. Put anything else that documents your home schooling experience into a scrapbook or portfolio. Be responsible and mature by remembering the tips from this step. It is especially important if you are planning to enroll in university. Search the Internet for information about homeschooling and the possibility of studying at university, updating your study portfolio and what is needed for your level of education to be recognized.
Step 9. Take full advantage of the self-study experience and home or parental education because you will be one of the rare kids who will exceed normal expectations, taking over the management of their own preparation and studies
Chances are you will impress others with your knowledge, self-determination and motivation, including people from academia!
Advice
- Based on your performance, it can be useful to establish a program, set dates to take written tests or assessments, which you can establish yourself on the topics you need or want to deepen, or even to test yourself in view of an exam that has already been set. It can be a great solution to create a weekly and monthly schedule.
- Be prepared to logically defend your position regarding the method of education and try to become a successful example of self-schooling.
Warnings
- You will likely face discrimination, stereotypes and other politically incorrect reactions from people. Be ready to respond using dialectic and rationality and try to make a good impression.
- Plan your future and decide whether to enroll in university.
