This article describes how to get married in Skyrim, obtaining and equipping Mara's Amulet, then talking to the non-player character you are interested in. This guide is valid for both the Standard edition of Skyrim and the Special edition released for next generation consoles and PC.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Obtaining the Amulet of Mara
Step 1. Go to Riften
You will find this city in the southeast corner of the Skyrim region. If you've already visited, you can use fast travel by opening the map and selecting Riften.
- If you've never been to Riften, you can ask for a paid ride on the carriage which is outside Whiterun or other major cities.
- You may already have a Mara amulet if you've explored some of Skyrim's dungeons or completed the "Book of Love" quest. Be sure to check your inventory before proceeding.
Step 2. Reach the Temple of Mara
From the city entrance, go left and then straight. On the left there should be a large temple, with a staircase leading to the entrance.
Step 3. Look for Maramal and talk to him
It is usually found in the Temple of Mara; if you arrive late at night, you may have to wait until around noon for it to appear.
If you can't find him in the temple even during the day, he is probably in the Bee and Bard pub, across the small bridge in the center of Riften
Step 4. Select the item "I want to know more about the temple of Mara"
Maramal will respond with information about Mara.
You can skip the dialogue by clicking the mouse button (or the button TO or X on console).
Step 5. Select the “Can I get married in the temple?
".
Maramal will ask you if you are aware of the marriage rite in Skyrim.
Step 6. Select "No, not really"
Maramal will start explaining to you how marriage works in Skyrim.
Step 7. Select the "I will buy an amulet of Mara" option
The item costs 200 gold. If you can afford it, Maramal will sell it to you.
Step 8. Equip Mara's amulet
Once that's done, you can start looking for a spouse.
Part 2 of 2: Getting married
Step 1. Find the person you want to marry, then talk to them
Characters available for marriage express happiness when you pass by or talk to them, but if you have any doubt, you can find the list of all the NPCs you can marry at this address.
- In some cases, you will need to complete a mission for the chosen person before you can continue.
- If the character is a paid follower, usually you just need to purchase his services.
- Gender is irrelevant - you can marry anyone who is available.
Step 2. Select the item "Are you interested in me?
The non-player character will answer yes.
Step 3. Select the entry "I will not lie
I am too.
In this way you have arranged with the character for the wedding.
Step 4. Return to Riften
You can use fast travel.
Step 5. Find Maramal and talk to him
You will find it at the Bee and Bard pub or at the temple of Mara.
Step 6. Select "I would like to be married in the temple"
Maramal will respond by saying that the wedding will be celebrated the following day between sunrise and sunset.
Step 7. Wait outside the temple until the following dawn
You can speed up the wait by pressing the "Wait" button (T on PC and "Back" on controller), then selecting the number of hours it takes to arrive at 8:00 the following day.
If you don't show up for the wedding, you need to find your future spouse, apologize, then set a new time with Maramal
Step 8. Enter the temple again
You will see a third person scene where Maramal marries your character with the non-player one.
Step 9. Select the item "I want it, now and forever"
In this way you complete the marriage.
If you have a home, the character will come and live with you
Advice
- If you marry a minion, he cannot be killed unless you have a mod.
- Choose a character who has advantages, such as being a merchant or a powerful wizard.
- Your spouse can prepare a homemade meal once a day that will heal you.
- Contrary to what is advisable to do in real life, in Skyrim you should get married based on the income of the future spouse.
