Typically AT&T engineers are dedicated to programming universal remote controls. If you buy a new one or you still want to program it yourself, there are several ways to do it. Follow this guide to learn how.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Use the TV Tool
Step 1. Turn on your TV
This method uses a program that is located inside the cable receiver. Press the Menu key and then select Help. In the Help menu, select Remote Control Settings.
Step 2. Select your remote
There are several options available to you. Scroll through the list until you find the remote you have. Tips and pictures appear to help you understand which remote you have.
Step 3. Select Automatic Code Search
A list of compatible devices is displayed. Search for the device you want to program and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
The instructions vary from device to device
Method 2 of 4: Use the Automatic Code Search
Step 1. Turn on the device you want to program
This can be a TV, DVD player or other auxiliary device. Point the remote control at the device.
Step 2. Hold down the Mode and Enter keys
The Mode key is one of several keys located at the top of the remote. Press and hold the Mode key for the device you want to program.
- For example, if you are programming a TV, press and hold the TV and Enter keys for one second and then release them.
- If you are programming a DVD player press and hold the DVD and Enter keys for one second and then release them.
- If you are programming an auxiliary device press and hold the AUX and Enter keys for one second and then release them.
Step 3. Make sure the remote is blinking
All Mode keys should flash twice upon release. This indicates that you have entered Programming Mode.
Step 4. Press the SCAN / FF key repeatedly
Pause briefly each time you press the button. Repeat this operation until the device you are programming turns off. Press the Power key to turn the device back on.
Step 5. Check the operation of the device
Once the device is turned back on, make sure that the Volume and Mute keys are working correctly. If these keys do not work keep pressing the SCAN / FF key until they start to do so.
Step 6. Press the Enter key to save the settings
The Mode key corresponding to the device you are programming will emit a single light pulse to confirm that the settings have been saved.
Method 3 of 4: Program the Remote Control Manually
Step 1. Turn on the device you want to program
Remember that only certain devices work with a certain remote. Check the user manual to make sure yours is one of them.
Step 2. Search for the 4-digit code for the desired device
Here you can view the list of all supported devices and their related codes.
Step 3. Press and hold the appropriate button on the remote
Choose between TV, DVD and AUX. Press and hold the OK button at the same time. Release the keys after one second. The four Mode keys will flash to indicate that you have entered programming mode.
Step 4. Enter the 4-digit code from Step 2
If you have entered the correct code, the Mode key will flash only once for an extended period of time. If you entered a wrong code instead, the Mode key will blink 8 times, and you will have to start over from Step 1. In this case, try entering a code again. Keep in mind that you will have to start over if the time available on the device runs out.
For some manufacturers there is more than one valid code. If the device does not work with the code you entered, try entering the next code
Step 5. Point the remote at your device
Press the Power key once. The device should shut down. If it doesn't, repeat the operation from Step 1.
Method 4 of 4: Use Your Remote's Memory
Step 1. Turn on the device you want to program
Then point the remote control at the device. If you do not find the user manual you can search for the 4-digit code of the device. You can do this even if the desired device is not present in the manual.
Step 2. Press and hold the button (TV, AUX, DVD) corresponding to the device you want to program
Press and hold the OK button at the same time. All keys should blink twice.
Step 3. Type "922"
The key corresponding to the selected mode should blink twice.
Step 4. Press and hold the PLAY button
Wait for the device to turn off before releasing the PLAY button. Use the REW key to check each code by moving backward, or use the FF key to check each code by moving forward.
Step 5. Press the ENTER key once you have found the correct code
The Mode key will flash three times.
- If you cannot find the desired code, press EXIT to return to normal use of the remote control.
- If the remote cannot find a valid code it will return to its normal operation.
Step 6. Turn on the device and test the remote
If that doesn't work, you may need to repeat these steps.
