This article explains how to get started using the Discord app on an Android device.
Steps
Part 1 of 7: Install the Application
Step 1. Open the Play Store on your device
The icon looks like a colored triangle (often in a white case) and is located in the application menu.
Step 2. Type Discord in the search box
A list of relevant results will appear.
Step 3. Select Discord - Talk, video chat and hang out with friends
This will open the Discord page in the Play Store.
Step 4. Click on Install
When the installation is complete, the "Install" button will change to "Open" and a purple icon with a white joystick inside will appear in the application menu.
Part 2 of 7: Log into Discord
Step 1. Open Discord
The icon features a joystick-shaped white smiley face in a purple box. You'll usually find it in the application menu or on the Home screen.
Step 2. Enter your Discord email address and password
You will need to enter the email address and password you used to sign up for Discord.
If you don't have an account yet, click on the button Sign in to create one.
Step 3. Click on Login
At this point you should be able to see the Discord Home screen.
Part 3 of 7: Send Direct Messages
Step 1. Open Discord on your device
The icon is purple and has a joystick-shaped white smiley face inside. It is usually found in the application menu or on the Home screen.
Step 2. Click on All
This option is located at the top of the screen. This will bring up a list of all your contacts on Discord.
To see the list of users who are currently online, click on instead Online.
Step 3. Select a friend's name
This will open your profile.
Step 4. Tap on the message symbol
It's a blue circular button with two white speech bubbles inside. This will open the chat window.
Step 5. Type a message
To start typing, press on the typing area (inside it says "Message @ [friend's name]") in order to open the keyboard.
Step 6. Click on the submit button
It looks like a gray paper airplane and is located in the lower right corner of the screen. The message will then appear in the conversation.
- To share a link to a website, copy the URL (to do so, press and hold the address, then select Copy). Next, paste it in the typing area (hold it and select Paste).
- To send an image or video, tap on + in the lower left corner of the screen, then select a file. If prompted, authorize the application to access your files.
Part 4 of 7: Joining a Server
Step 1. Find a server to join
If you already know the link of the server you want to join, you can skip this step. If not, you can check out Discord's public server lists on sites like https://www.discordservers.com or
Step 2. Copy the server invitation link
To copy a link, select the text with your finger and hold it down until you see the "Copy" option. At this point, click on Copy.
Step 3. Open Discord on your device
The icon looks like a joystick-shaped white smiley face on a purple background. You can generally find it in the application menu or on the home screen.
Step 4. Click on ☰
This button is located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 5. Click on +
This circular button is located on the left side of the screen. Two options will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Step 6. Select Join a server
Step 7. Press and hold the box that says "Invitation Link"
You will be able to lift your finger once the "Paste" option appears.
Step 8. Click on Paste
Step 9. Click on Join server
This option is located in the upper right corner of the screen. You will then be connected to the server.
Part 5 of 7: Joining a Channel
Step 1. Open Discord on your device
It's the purple icon that has a joystick-shaped white smiley face inside. You'll usually find it in the app menu or on the Home screen.
Step 2. Click on ☰
This button is located in the upper left corner.
Step 3. Select a server
The servers are listed along the left side of the screen.
Step 4. Select a channel
To chat, select a channel in the section titled "Text Channels". To listen and talk to other users, select an option in the section titled "Voice Channels".
Step 5. Select Join Voice Chat to start using a voice channel
Once you are logged in, you will see a green dot at the bottom of the screen.
To change the configuration of a voice chat, tap on Voice settings at the bottom of the screen.
Part 6 of 7: Creating a Server
Step 1. Open Discord on your device
It's the purple icon that has a white joystick-shaped emoticon inside. It is usually located in the app menu or on the home screen.
Step 2. Click on ☰
This button is located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Press the + button
It is located in a circle on the left side of the screen.
Step 4. Select Create Server
Step 5. Enter the server details
- Press on Upload image to select a photo that represents the server. This image will appear along with the other servers along the left side of the screen.
- Enter the server name in the box titled "Server Name".
- Select your region.
Step 6. Click on Create Server
This option is located in the upper right corner of the screen. The server will then be ready to be used.
Part 7 of 7: Get out
Step 1. Open Discord on your device
It's the purple icon with a white joystick emoticon inside. It is usually located in the app menu or on the Home screen.
Step 2. Click on ☰
This button is located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Select My Account
Step 4. Press on the square that has an arrow inside
It is located in the upper right corner of the screen. This will take you out of Discord.
