This article explains how to know if someone has read your message on Android. Most built-in messaging apps don't have this feature, but read receipts are turned on by default on apps like WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook Messenger.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Enable Read Receipts for Received Messages on Android
Step 1. Open the messages or the Android messaging application
Most Android devices don't have a messaging application that lets you know if your messages have been read, but some do offer this feature.
Both you and the recipient of the message should be using the same messaging application (and both should have read receipts turned on), otherwise this method won't work
Step 2. Tap the menu icon (usually ⁝ or ≡).
It is located at the top of the screen.
Step 3. Tap Settings
Step 4. Tap Advanced
Some models don't have this option. If so, tap "Text Messages" or similar entry.
Step 5. Activate the item "Read receipts", which lets you know when the message was opened by the recipient
Note that this option is not available on all Android devices.
If you see an option called "Delivery Receipts", consider that you will only receive a delivery confirmation of the sent message. This does not therefore mean that the recipient has opened it to read it
Method 2 of 4: Using Facebook Messenger
Step 1. Open Facebook Messenger on your Android device
The icon looks like a blue speech bubble containing a white lightning bolt. It is located on the home screen or in the app drawer.
Facebook Messenger includes a feature that lets users know if their messages have been read
Step 2. Tap the name of the user you want to send a message to
This will open a conversation.
Step 3. Type your message and send it
The message will then appear in the conversation.
Step 4. Look at the small icon below the sent message, at the bottom right to be exact
- If you see a check mark in a white circle, the message has been sent but has not yet been delivered to the recipient.
- If you see a check mark in a blue circle, the message has been delivered, but the recipient hasn't opened or read it yet.
- If you see your friend's profile picture instead of check marks, it means that they have read your message.
Method 3 of 4: Using WhatsApp
Step 1. Open WhatsApp on Android
The icon looks like a white telephone handset in a green dialogue bubble. It is located on the home screen or in the app drawer.
Step 2. Tap the name of the user you want to send the message to
This will open a conversation.
Step 3. Type a message and send it
It will appear at the bottom of the conversation.
Step 4. Look at the icon that appears at the bottom right below the message
It will let you know if it has been read.
- If you see a gray check mark, this means the message has not yet been delivered to the recipient. You may not have opened the application.
- If you see two gray check marks, the message has been delivered, but the recipient hasn't read it yet.
- When the two check marks turn blue, then it means that the recipient has read the message.
Method 4 of 4: Using Viber
Step 1. Open Viber on Android
The icon features a purple speech bubble and a telephone handset. It is located on the home screen or in the app drawer.
Step 2. Tap the name of the user you want to send the message to
This will open a conversation.
Step 3. Type a message and send it
It will appear at the bottom of the conversation.
Step 4. Look at the gray text that appears below the message
It will let you know if it has been seen by the recipient.
- If no gray text appears below the message, this means that the message has been sent, but has not yet reached the recipient. It may be that he didn't open Viber or the phone is turned off.
- If you read "Delivered", this means it was delivered to the recipient, but they haven't opened it yet.
- If you read "Seen", this means that you have read it.
