Your child has to attend a school play, and you have to make him a pig costume. Or maybe you need to make one for yourself for a local party. You will need ears, a nose, and a curled tail, all of which you can get very easily. Finally you will also need pink dresses to complete the costume.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Making the Head
Step 1. Buy a pink headband
You can find headbands of various colors at girls' accessories stores. You can also find them in large supermarkets. Choose a sturdy headband.
- If you can't find a pink headband, you can make one. Buy a headband in another color, or use one you already own, then paint it pink. You can also wrap it with pink ribbon, using hot glue to secure it.
- To wrap the headband, start by gluing one end of the ribbon. Then add some glue to one side of the tape, a few inches at a time. Wrap the ribbon along the headband, overlapping it slightly on itself. Keep adding glue and wrapping until you get to the other end of the headband. Trim the excess ribbon and secure the last edge of the ribbon.
Step 2. Cut out the pig ears from a piece of pink felt
Fold the fabric in half and cut the ears along the fold without separating the two layers, so that you get two double ears.
- Take a measurement of 6-7cm along the fold.
- Cut following a curved line starting at the crease. Move first outwards and then inwards, until you get a height of about 12 cm, where the tip of the ear will be.
- Do the same thing on the other side, until you reach the tip.
- If you want, you can also cut out another piece of white felt for the inside of the ear. Make it the same shape as the one you just cut but slightly smaller so it can fit inside.
Step 3. Open your ears
Place the headband inside the fold of the ears, and fold the ears so that the two layers match. You will need a space of about 3-4 cm in the center of the headband, so place the ears at this distance. Finally, open your ears to spread the glue.
Step 4. Glue the base of the headband inside the crease of the ears
Put the glue on the headband, and apply light pressure to fix the ears. At this point they will be fixed to the headband but still open.
You can also add a piece of stiff cardstock or plastic to the inside of the ears to make them more solid. Cut out a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than the ears, and glue it to the inside of the larger ear. Leave some space on the sides to be able to put the glue
Step 5. Glue the two ears together
Add some glue to the inside of the pieces of fabric, and fold the ears to close them.
Step 6. Glue the white pieces
Place these pieces in the center of the ears, and secure them with some glue.
Part 2 of 4: Making the Nose
Step 1. Cut out the base of a paper cup
You can use a large glass if you need to make an adult costume. Make an incision along the side of the glass until it is about an inch from the base. Twist the scissors and cut horizontally, you should get a kind of bowl.
- Alternatively, you can use a roll of toilet paper, cut it so that it is only a couple of centimeters high.
- You can also use a large pink-painted plastic jar cap.
Step 2. Glue a piece of elastic
Add a strip of glue to the inside of the nose, running from side to side including the edges. Secure a piece of elastic along the strip, being careful not to touch the hot glue with your fingers. You can use a pencil to apply light pressure. The elastic should be long enough that it can be measured on a person so that it can be cut to the right size.
- If you are using a roll of toilet paper, cut two pieces of elastic to glue into it. Spread a line of glue along one inner side of the roll, and press lightly on the elastic to secure it. Repeat on the opposite side.
- You can also use ribbon instead of elastic, but make sure it's long enough for you to tie.
Step 3. Cut a round piece of pink felt or fleece
Make it large enough to cover the outside of the cut glass or toilet paper roll.
Skip this step if you are using the cap method
Step 4. Glue the fabric to the base of the cup, centering it
If you are using the roll or cap, skip this step.
Step 5. Then glue the fabric on the sides
You can make small incisions at the edges of the fabric to make it adhere better, then glue everything together. Cut out a space on both sides for the elastic to pass through.
Skip this step if you are using the painted cap method
Step 6. Glue the fabric by pulling it along the sides and folding it inwards
Make sure you leave a space for the elastic.
Step 7. Add two black ovals to the front
Cut and glue two small black ovals on the front to complete the muzzle. They must be placed vertically and not horizontally.
- Instead of gluing two ovals, you can cut two holes of the same shape.
- You can also use a small button instead of the ovals. Choose a pink or black one, and then glue it in the center.
Step 8. Test the mask on a person
Cut the elastic or ribbon to the required length. Tie a knot in the elastic, it will be easier to put on. Leave the ribbon undone until it's time to put on the costume.
Part 3 of 4: Making the Queue
Step 1. Fold a piece of pink fleece or felt in half
Cut out a spiral shape, starting with a wide, flat base and ending with a tip. In practice, you will get two identical pieces of fabric.
Step 2. Sew the two pieces together
Sew a seam on the sides of the spirals to join them, but leave the base open.
Step 3. Turn the tail back
You need to pull the sides of the tail inside, so that the tail turns all the way around and looks better. You can use a pencil to help you.
Step 4. Also close the base with a seam
Slip the base into the tail and sew it.
Part 4 of 4: Making the Costume Body
Step 1. Buy a pink jersey
Add pants or tights of the same color. Don't be afraid to indulge yourself a bit, you could also try some pink and white striped pants.
Step 2. Cut an oval out of a piece of white fleece or felt
You can also use light pink fabric. Make it a large piece, but no larger than the shirt.
Step 3. Glue the oval to the front of the shirt
Use fabric glue to add the oval to the center of the shirt. You can also sew it if you prefer.
If you want to add padding to your costume, glue only along the edges. Leave a few inches empty on one side, and let the glue dry. Insert the padding, and close with more glue or a seam
Step 4. Sew the tail to the back of the shirt, at the bottom
Step 5. Add shoes or boots
Get some black, brown or gray shoes to complete the costume.
