This article explains how to copy and paste portions of text or images using a Chromebook.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Using Key Combinations
Step 1. Select the content to copy
Use your device's touchpad to highlight the text or content you want to copy.
Step 2. Press the key combination Ctrl + C
The selected content will be copied to the Chromebook's system clipboard.
Step 3. Navigate to where you want to paste the copied content
This could be a document, an email, a web page, or any other field or program where you can insert text or an image.
Step 4. Click where you want to paste the content
Place the text cursor exactly where you want the content you copied earlier to appear.
Step 5. Press the key combination Ctrl + V
In this way the element you copied will be inserted in the chosen place.
Method 2 of 4: Using the Context Menu
Step 1. Select the content to copy
Use your device's touchpad to highlight the text or content you want to copy. Drag the mouse cursor along the entire extension of the element in question, in order to highlight it in its entirety.
Step 2. Click on the selected item with the right mouse button
The relevant context menu will be displayed.
- To simulate right-clicking using the device's touchpad, you'll need to hold down the "Alt" key while pressing the touchpad. Alternatively, press the touchpad using two fingers at the same time.
- If you are using a mouse, you simply need to right-click on the selected item to access the corresponding context menu.
Step 3. Click on the Copy option
It is listed at the top of the context menu.
Step 4. Navigate to where you want to paste the copied content
This could be a document, an email, a web page, or any other field or program where you can insert text or an image.
Step 5. Click where you want to paste the selected item with the right button
The context menu will reappear.
- To simulate right-clicking using the device's touchpad, you'll need to hold down the "Alt" key while pressing the touchpad. Alternatively, press the touchpad using two fingers at the same time.
- If you are using a mouse, you simply need to right-click on the selected item to access the corresponding context menu.
Step 6. Click on Paste
It is listed at the top of the context menu. This way the copied content will be pasted in the indicated place.
Method 3 of 4: Using the Main Menu Commands
Step 1. Select the content to copy
Use your device's touchpad to highlight the text or content you want to copy.
Step 2. Click on the ⋮ button
It is located in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 3. Click on the Copy option
It is listed at the bottom of the menu that appeared, to the right of the "Edit" item.
Step 4. Navigate to where you want to paste the copied content
This could be a document, an email, a web page, or any other field or program where you can insert text or an image.
Step 5. Click where you want to paste the content
Place the text cursor exactly where you want the text or image you copied earlier to appear.
Step 6. Click the ⋮ button again
It is located in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 7. Click on Paste
It is listed at the bottom of the menu that appeared, to the right of the "Edit" item.
Method 4 of 4: Copy and Paste an Image
Step 1. Place the mouse cursor on the image to be copied
The first step is to select the image you want to copy.
Step 2. Hold down the Alt key while pressing your finger on the trackpad
A context menu will be displayed.
If you are using a mouse, you simply need to right click to access the corresponding context menu
Step 3. Click on the Copy Image item
It is listed in the center of the menu that appeared.
Step 4. Navigate to where you want to paste the copied content
This could be a document, an email, a web page, or any other field or program where you can insert text or an image.
Step 5. Click where you want to paste the content
Place the text cursor exactly where you want the text or image you copied earlier to appear.
Step 6. Hold down the Alt key while pressing your finger on the trackpad
A context menu will be displayed.
Step 7. Click on Paste
It is displayed at the top of the context menu that appeared.
Advice
- Press the key combination Ctrl + Alt +? to have access to the complete list of all key combinations active on your Chromebook. If you are new to using the Chromebook, this guide will be very useful until you have memorized all the key combinations you need.
- You can use the key combination Ctrl + X to move portions of text or images from one place to another in a document.
- When you need to copy and paste content on your Chromebook, hold down the touchpad as you drag your finger to select the item you want to copy. At this point press the touchpad using two fingers to access the context menu, choose the "Copy" option, move the mouse cursor to the point where you want to paste the copied content, press the touchpad again with two fingers and choose the "Paste" option.
