Toxic shock syndrome, or TSS, is a rare, but sometimes fatal, bacterial infection caused by staphylococcal exotoxin. It is a serious and fatal disease, which can however be prevented with the appropriate treatment and knowledge.
Steps
Step 1. During your menstrual cycle, change your tampon frequently
If you are using a tampon, be sure to replace it every 4-6 hours and never use it for prolonged use overnight. On the other hand, tampons need to be changed twice a day and can be used overnight.
Step 2. Choose a tampon suitable for your menstrual flow
Also make sure the size fits your body size. Do not use one that does not become completely saturated during use or that you have to insert forcefully. Internal tampons can scrape the vaginal walls and cause small scratches that will allow toxins to enter the membranes.
Step 3. Make appropriate use of the contraceptive sponge and birth control diaphragm and change them frequently
Before using them, make sure they are perfectly and completely clean.
Step 4. Wash your hands
Despite common beliefs, female hygiene products and contraceptives are not the only cause of TSS. The bacteria are in fact able to spread even on the hands, it is therefore important that they are always clean.
Step 5. Consider using different menstrual cycle products that are not associated with TSS
For example, menstrual cups and sea sponges.
Step 6. Look out for a different type of toxic shock syndrome, Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (or STSS), caused by the entry of the strep bacteria into the body through injured skin from cuts, scrapes, surgical wounds and chickenpox blisters
Advice
- When sleeping at night, use tampons instead of tampons.
- Organic cotton pads contain fewer toxins and leave no fibers inside the vagina, unlike regular tampons made of rayon and cotton.
- Take care of your daily hygiene, preferring a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Make sure any open cuts and wounds are properly cleaned and protected.
Warnings
- When using tampons or other feminine hygiene or contraceptive products. always follow the directions carefully and avoid improper use.
- Before or after inserting a tampon or replacing a sanitary napkin, always wash your hands.
