The Italian passport for adults is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. Upon expiry of the validity, shown in the document, it is not renewed but a new one must be requested. To apply for a new passport, in addition to the signed application form, you will need two passport photos and other documents. Read the article to find out which ones.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Apply for a Passport at a Competent Office
Step 1. Begin the application process by consulting the Online Agenda portal
Go to https://www.passaportonline.poliziadistato.it/ and book an appointment to submit the application.
-
Clearly you will not be able to avoid going to the police station (or the Carabinieri) to complete the procedure, but at least it will be possible to avoid an interminable queue.
Step 2. Fill out the passport application form
You can download it at this link.
Fill in the sections of your interest and print the document
Step 3. Bring a valid ID
It is advisable to bring with you, in addition to the original, also a photocopy of the document.
Step 4. Take two identical and recent passport photos
In the photos the background must be white, you must look straight ahead and do not wear hats or sunglasses.
- Take professional photos. Some people try to do it themselves, but the quality standards for a photo are very precise. Go to a photo studio or, if you want to save money, use an automatic machine you find in shopping malls.
- On the website of the State Police there is a list of very detailed rules regarding the photos to be exhibited:
Step 5. Make your passport payment
At the pre-arranged appointment you will have to bring the receipt of the payment of € 42.50 for the ordinary passport. The payment must be made exclusively through current account slip n. 67422808 in the name of "Ministry of Economy and Finance - Department of the Treasury". The reason for the payment is "Amount for issuing the electronic passport". To facilitate the task, post offices have pre-filled bulletins.
Step 6. Purchase the electronic card
It is a € 73.50 mark that can be purchased as always in tobacconists, to be presented together with the rest of the documentation.
Step 7. Return the old document
Even if you will be given a new one, you will need to hand over your old passport with the documentation. If you have lost it or it has been stolen, you must also submit the relevant report.
Step 8. Wait for the document to arrive
Once the passport has been requested and the complete documentation has been delivered, depending on the police headquarters and the number of requests, the document will be issued within a few weeks.
It is possible to have the passport collected by another person as long as the delegate is of age, has a photocopy of the passport holder's document and a proxy legalized by a notary or registry officer, written on plain paper. The delegated person must obviously bring their own document
Method 2 of 2: Receive the Document By Mail
Step 1. Receive your passport at home
For citizens who request it, from 27 October 2014 a new service has been in operation that allows the delivery of the passport directly to their home by paying cash on delivery a cost of € 8, 20 directly to the person in charge of the Italian Post Office.
Step 2. Go to the Passport Office
If you intend to use the home service, the Police Headquarters or the police station will send you a document to be filled in and then delivered in person to the Passport Office, specifying in particular the information relating to the domicile where you wish to receive the document.
-
You will also receive a printout of the receipt containing the envelope number, so that you can keep track of the shipment on the Poste Italiane portal.
Step 3. If the document has not been received, don't worry
If you are not at home when the post office worker passes you will be left with a non-delivery notice: from then on you will have 30 days to collect your passport at the post office photocopy of the signed document). After 30 days without collection, the passport will be returned to the issuing Passport Office.
- In the event of an incorrect address, Poste Italiane will return the document to the issuing Passport Office.
-
In case of loss of the envelope, Poste Italiane will reimburse € 50 to the citizen, who will only have to pay the € 42.50 bulletin to obtain a new booklet.
