Are you passionate and / or do you know someone who would like to participate in a reality show? Would you like to have the opportunity to compete for a big prize by traveling to exotic locations? Auditioning for "The Amazing Race" might be for you then. Here's what you need to do to pass the selections and participate in the program.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Part 1 of 4: Before applying
Step 1. Watch the program
It might seem obvious, but it is such an important pre-requisite that it is noteworthy. You will be able to convince producers that you are perfect for the program only if you demonstrate a thorough understanding of what happens in the program and what is needed to tackle it.
Step 2. Learn the basic requirements to be taken
While there aren't too many restrictions, there are some basic requirements regarding age, citizenship and physical condition.
- Both you and your teammate must be 21 years old by the start of next season.
- Both you and your teammate must be US citizens with valid US passports and driving licenses. You must also be a US resident.
- You and your partner must not have connections with the producers or affiliates of the program. These include employees, managers and relatives of employees / managers.
- You and your partner must be in full physical and mental shape. You must be willing to check your personal history and complete medical analysis if you are chosen as a semi-finalist.
- If chosen as a semi-finalist, you must pass physical and psychological exams.
- You and your teammate cannot run for public office until after the first broadcast of any episode in which you appear.
Step 3. Ask yourself if you have what it takes
There are some character traits and some qualities that aren't indispensable, but you should be able to demonstrate them during audition if you're hoping to get caught.
You should be very determined, easy-going, adventurous, physically and mentally fit, adaptable to new environments and have an overall interesting lifestyle, history and personality
Step 4. Find a partner
You must sign up for auditions with a specific teammate. Choose someone you know well so that your interactions are more intense and the relationship appears stronger.
- You shouldn't be shy or hesitant about talking about relationships openly and in public. It is a very relationship-focused program, so a willingness to be open about relationships and others is important.
- In general, someone you have a solid connection with and have known for years would be preferable to someone you only know superficially. A sibling, close cousin, parent, child, close friend, wife, lover, or ex-lover would be a better choice in many cases than a colleague or neighbor with whom you exchange a few words from time to time.
- Your relationship doesn't have to be perfect, but to overcome the challenges you will face, you should choose someone you can work with.
Step 5. Note any deadlines
Online applications are accepted all year round, but if you hope to be on the program during a particular season, you need to pay attention to that season's deadlines.
- Auditions usually start 8-12 months before the scheduled air date for the season, and approximately 4-6 months before the competition is filmed.
- Castings open for a given season usually last 1 or 2 months.
Method 2 of 4: Part 2 of 4: Apply online
Step 1. Shoot a video with your teammate
The video should be a maximum of 3 minutes long, and should realistically demonstrate the personalities of both teammates as well as the ways in which they interact with each other.
- Don't follow a script. The most intense video auditions are true and honest. A video showing your daily life and interactions, especially those with your teammate, is better than a skit or costume video.
- Tell the producers about your life skills and experiences, as well as who you and your teammate are. You should demonstrate how you interact and how your personalities can influence others during the program.
- The video must show both you and your teammate.
- Include real-life examples and describe your skills.
- Shoot your footage during the day. Avoid backlighting, as this could overshadow and hide your face.
- Speak loudly and choose a quiet area so you can hear clearly.
- Shoot the video in landscape rather than portrait (vertical) style.
- The video should weigh less than 30 Mb. It should be in one of these formats: mpg, mpeg, flv, avi, mp4, mov, 3gp, wmv, or mv4.
Step 2. Save a photo of your team
When you submit the application, you will need to attach digital copies of close-up photographs of yourself and your teammate.
- You will need a photo of you and your partner together, a separate photo of yours alone and one of only your teammate.
- The photos should weigh a maximum of 2.95 Mb each. They should also be in one of these formats: png, jpeg, jpg, gif, bmp, or tiff.
- Save the photos to your computer before starting the application to make things easier.
Step 3. Fill out the online form
Applications must be completed in a single session and can be found and filled out on the program's official website.
- The application can be found here:
- You will need to specify the name, surname, email address, telephone number, address, family status, profession, number of children, date of birth, height, weight, ethnicity of both team members, and also any other programs to which you participated, even individually.
- You will also need to specify the nature of your relationship with your teammate and attach a short bio of your team.
Method 3 of 4: Part 3 of 4: Open castings
Step 1. Find an open casting near you
Most of the open castings will take place while producers are actively looking for new entrants for a new season.
- You can check the casting schedule here:
- Castings are usually 4-6 months before the scheduled start of shooting.
Step 2. Sign the release
You will need to download and sign a release that allows producers to film your audition.
- Release forms can be found here:
- The form essentially certifies that you are allowing producers to record your audition and grant them the right to use and re-use it as they wish.
- Each team member must sign an individual release.
Step 3. Show up early
The auditions can get very crowded, very quickly. To make sure you avoid the queue and get there as soon as possible, you should show up about 30-60 minutes early.
- It might also be a good idea to bring something to drink and nibble while you wait.
- Dress well, but wear something comfortable so that you can be able to stand in line for as long as necessary.
Step 4. Fill out a form
You can download it online or fill it out once you get to the open casting.
- You can print the online version of the application if you want:
- Forms to fill out will be available at casting, but it is usually recommended that you fill them out first. The mess and chaos of an audition day can make it difficult to focus on filling out forms, leading you to respond in a less interesting way without meaning to.
Step 5. Audition when they call you
When the producers call you and your teammate, you will both be screened and asked to demonstrate why you should be included in the program.
- An audition should last approximately as long as the video audition (3 minutes) but could last more or less depending on who is in charge of it.
- Answer all the questions directly but show your natural humor, your self-confidence and your personality in general.
Method 4 of 4: Part 4 of 4: The next steps
Step 1. Wait for a response
If you are selected to be a semi-finalist, you will receive a congratulatory email and an invitation to the next step.
- If you are not chosen as a semi-finalist, you will not be contacted. The program has too many candidates and not enough resources to call everyone.
- If you haven't heard from yet, take note of the date and check the program website to see if the second call-ups have already started or finished for the season.
Step 2. Go to your last audition if invited
If you are chosen as a semi-finalist, you will be invited to a final interview in Los Angeles, California.
- If you are selected as a possible semi-finalist, you will need to complete an "Interview Permit Kit" and a "Semi-Finalist Permit Kit".
- A semi-finalist will be provided with return economy airline tickets between your nearest airport and Los Angeles free of charge. Accommodation will also be offered by the production.
Step 3. Wait for the last notification
Some time after your last interview, you will be told whether or not you have been chosen for the program.
It should happen faster than the previous notification. You may receive communication in person, by phone or by email
Step 4. Reapply for the next season if you want
If you were nominated but were not hired as a semi-finalist, or did not pass the last audition, you can still try again in the next seasons of The Amazing Race.
- If you have already been a finalist, you can only reapply with a new teammate.
- If you have not been a finalist, you can reapply with the same teammate or with a new one.
- You will need to fill out a new application and submit a new video or re-enter a casting for each new season you want to participate in, even if you have already applied in the past.
