A car accident can be a traumatic and frightening experience, preventing people from knowing what to do next. It is important to act quickly to ensure that everyone involved is safe and that all steps are followed to ascertain the claim. Know what to do after a car accident so that you are ready in an emergency.
Steps
Step 1. Determine any injuries
The most important thing to do immediately after a car accident is to assess any injuries suffered by you, drivers and passengers. Check first if you are okay and then examine the other people involved. If necessary, call an ambulance immediately
Step 2. Move the vehicle if possible
- If you can drive your car smoothly, pull it to the side of the road so it doesn't get in the way of traffic. This way, while exchanging information with other drivers, you will keep yourself at a safe distance from passing cars and make it easier for the police and ambulance to reach the crash site.
- Call the police.
Step 3. The police will collect statements from all drivers involved in the accident and determine if a report is required
This information will be important if you have to make a claim to the insurance company for damage suffered in the car accident. Write down the name and badge number of the investigating police officer in case the insurance agent or lawyer representing you needs to contact him.
Step 4. Exchange the data
Get the names, addresses and phone numbers of all other drivers involved in the traffic accident. Write down the license plate number, make and model of each vehicle. Gather all information related to insurance including the company, policy number and contact information of their insurance agent that the drivers may give you
Step 5. Take the photos
Photograph the damage to your car and other vehicles involved in the accident. This way you can document them when you submit a claim through the insurance company
Step 6. Get witnesses
- Get the names and contact information of any witnesses who witnessed the incident. Write down their version of what happened and make sure they are willing to be contacted and consulted by your lawyer or insurance company.
- Stay where you are.
Step 7. Stay close to your car until the police arrive to fill out all necessary reports and all relevant information has been exchanged
If you leave the accident site, you risk criminal charges.
