Groundwater that contains many minerals is called hard water. Hard water doesn't dissolve soap and detergent very well, and it leaves deposits that stain toilets and sinks. Installing a water softener will reduce the amount of minerals and provide your home with softened or non-lime water.
Steps
Step 1. Read all the instructions accompanying your softener before starting the installation
Step 2. Turn off the water at home and turn off the appliances to heat the water
Step 3. Open all taps and external pipes to empty the water pipes before installing a water softener
Step 4. Place the water softener in a dry and safe area that is level
Most softeners have two tanks, and you have to arrange them next to each other.
Step 5. Measure the length between the cold water pipe and the bypass connections on the water softener tank
Cut a piece of copper pipe of that length, and solder the fittings at the ends. The installation of a water softener includes some welding work.
Step 6. Follow the manufacturer's directions to install the drain hose on the water softener head
Step 7. Mount the overflow pipe that is attached to the side of the softener tank and connect it to a drain
For the installation of a softener, it is necessary to provide drainage.
Step 8. Put the bypass valve on the head valve of the water softener
Adjust the screws on the stainless steel clamps with a screwdriver to put the valve in its seat. When installing a water softener, make sure you have all your tools on hand.
Step 9. Connect the copper pipe that carries the water to the bypass valve
Use a wrench to tighten the feed hose fittings. When installing a water softener, do not over tighten the fittings.
Step 10. Connect the copper pipe from the water softener to the water pipes
- Scrub the fittings and pipes with steel wool. When installing a water softener, you need to weld the fittings to the pipes.
- Solder the fittings together by applying flux and melting it with a propane torch.
Step 11. Turn on the appliances to heat the water and open the valves to give water back to the house
Step 12. Insert the control valve and put approximately 15 liters of water in the tank containing the saline solution
The installation of the softener includes the preparation for use of the tank with the saline solution, and you will need to add about 18 kg of sodium or potassium chloride to the unit.
Step 13. Put the softener in the counter-jet phase and set the bypass valve in the service position
To put the water softener into operation, open the inlet valve in position 1/4 to let the air out of the drainage pipe.
Step 14. Fully open the water inlet valve, when a constant flow of water appears in the drainage pipe
Step 15. Run the softener with a full counter-jet cycle when you install a water softener
Step 16. Test the system for leaks
If water leaks, check the welds and fittings. Reheat or tighten fittings to repair any leaks.
