This article explains how to add Hindi language to a mobile phone keyboard. Since WhatsApp allows you to use the standard smartphone keyboard and its variants, it is possible to write in Hindi on this application.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Adding a Hindi Keyboard to an iPhone
Step 1. Open the iPhone settings
The icon looks like a gray gear and is usually found on the home screen.
Step 2. Scroll down and tap General
This option is located towards the top of the settings page.
Step 3. Scroll down and tap Keyboard
This option is located almost at the bottom of the "General" page.
Step 4. Tap Keyboards
This item is located at the top of the page.
Step 5. Tap Add New Keyboard, the last entry on this page
Step 6. Scroll down and tap Hindi
Since the languages are listed alphabetically on the iPhone, you'll find it in the H.
If the Hindi language appears at the top of the "Suggested keyboards" list, which is near the top of the page, you don't need to scroll down to find it
Step 7. Tap Devanagari
This option enters traditional Hindi characters on the keyboard, rather than transcribing them as you type them.
Step 8. Tap Done
From now on you will be able to select the Hindi language from the standard iPhone keyboard.
Part 2 of 3: Adding a Hindi Keyboard on Android
Step 1. Open the Android settings
The icon looks like a gray gear and is usually found in the app drawer.
Step 2. Tap Language & input
You may need to scroll down to see this option.
On Samsung devices this option is found on the General Management page
Step 3. Tap Virtual Keyboard
If you are using an older version of Android, this section is called "Keyboard and input methods" instead and is located within the "Language and input" page.
Step 4. Tap the entry called "Current Keyboard"
- On Android 7, the default keyboard is the Gboard (Google keyboard).
- On Samsung devices, the default keyboard is the Samsung Keyboard.
Step 5. Tap Language
This will open a list of languages that you can use for writing.
If you are using a Samsung device, tap Language & input, then Add input languages
Step 6. Tap the button next to "Hindi"
You may need to disable the "Use system language" option first. This allows you to download the Hindi language for the current keyboard.
As for Samsung keyboards, tap the हिंदी button
Part 3 of 3: Using the Hindi Keyboard
Step 1. Press the Home button on your mobile to minimize the settings
Step 2. Open WhatsApp
The icon looks like a white telephone handset on a green background.
Step 3. Tap Chat
It is located at the bottom (iPhone) or top (Android) of the screen.
If a particular conversation opens, tap the arrow at the top left to go back and see the chat page
Step 4. Tap a conversation to open it
Step 5. Tap the text field at the bottom of the screen
Step 6. Select the devanagari keyboard
The process varies depending on the mobile:
- iPhone: Press and hold the globe icon at the bottom left of the keyboard, then slide your finger up to select the devanagari one.
- Android: Press and hold the spacebar or the "Language" button on the left side of the keyboard, then tap the "Hindi" option.
Step 7. Type your message as usual
The keyboard and characters will be in Hindi.
